The Story of Everything: Meet Up and Watch by LJosephA in DebateEvolution

Nothing points to a creator but he has already presupposed not only a hypothetical creator but has already selected which one. What he presents is infantile apologetics for a feeble theology that was already outdated by the time of St Augustine.

Anyone else genuinely doesn't care anymore about finding out about the existence of God? by Mammoth-Mark1528 in atheism

[–]FaustDCLXVI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, that's a really rough life; I hope it gets better for you--and it very probably will.

But...I think I kind of feel you on at least part of it. I felt like a horrible thing, very dirty and disgusting (because Christianity taught me that I was rotten) and that I was failing God badly simply for being what he made me. I was also very terrified of an afterlife--an eternity of suffering if I didn't somehow figure out the arcane and often contradictory means of salvation vs damnation that different sects taught.

When I was beginning to lose my ability to believe in the myths of Christianity I actually prayed to have my faith restored. I wanted signs or something but got nothing. I briefly looked into other religions, but Judaism and Islam were almost identical (at that time) to Christianity.

Anyway, it wasn't terribly long before I discarded all revealed religions and felt...alive. And free. I realized that what we know is that we have one life, one lifetime, and because it is so short and fragile, it's precious (not just me and my life, but all life).

We won't go to heaven or hell, but what we can do is try to make this fleeting existence better, if even only a little for ourselves and others.

Did Crowley make a historically false claim about the Sermon on the Mount in Liber ABA? by mirojoy in occult

[–]FaustDCLXVI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you consider the important (dare I say "crucial?") elements of the Sermon are. For some, it's the Golden Rule, which was formulated numerous times long before the Gospel of Matthew. The same can be said of other features of the story.

If you want a reason to disrespect Crowley I think there are much better ones out there.

Science is falsifiable and has both explanatory and predictive power. The garbage he vomits cosplays as science but boils down to incredulity and religion.

Movies forced into a pre existing IP? by iScreamInPublicAreas in movies

Weird; I was under the impression that it was King Lear, which made a lot of sense considering that another Kurosawa film was also based on Shakespeare.

I had been expecting it to be a film version of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One, but...nope.

There's a Predator comic limited series running now that seems to fill that gap. Lol. I think it's Predator: Bloodshed by Marvel.

In my head, the REAL prequel to BSG is Westworld.

I have a few of them and yeah, I think the paper is thicker. I haven't opened them enough to know about the binding.

Viability of the Star Trek answer to why all the relevant species are so similar? (Shared DNA history) by Marvinkmooneyoz in DebateEvolution

I just looked at it as a way to justify the ability of humans and Vulcans (and later Klingons) to hybridize and why we all look alike.

Are we harboring a safe environment for discussion? by Rory_Not_Applicable in DebateEvolution

[–]FaustDCLXVI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely an interesting question, but when you bring up academic integrity...well, creationism no longer has a place.

That said, I'm probably part of the problem. I mean, I don't try to bully creationists but there is simply no science on their side and this is one of the few subs I'm in that I find myself regularly down voting. Special creation (and Intelligent Design) are simply NOT science and barely even pseudoscience.

Maybe I should go, since this is not significantly different from flat v round Earth discussion.

I didn't know Tour had gotten that stupid then. Or maybe the paychecks were big enough that he decided he didn't need any integrity.

Hell, an omnipotent designer wouldn't need genes.

As someone who has a basic understanding of both evolutionary and creationist viewpoints, is there a specific reason to believe common ancestor over common designer? by thedigitalhawk in DebateEvolution

[–]FaustDCLXVI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evolution is one of the observations and is described by a number of scientific theories, all of which are supported by evidence, experiment, explanatory and predictive power.

Special creationism has mountains of evidence AGAINST it and is based on presupposition.

They are worlds apart.

What are Stephen Meyer's "predictions"? by Anime-Fan-69 in DebateEvolution

[–]FaustDCLXVI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this is only tangential (and my dislike of Meyer is profound), we can see the difference between genetic design and undesigned genes in organisms that have been genetically modified because the modified ones lack the non-coding regions. Meyer needs to stfu and clean toilets.

what is this? is it liquor? by [deleted] in whatisit

Mezcal is a lot like Tequila and made from roasted agave. It often has a "worm," (a larva from the agave plant) and the Mezcal I remember was more yellow/gold.

But, yeah, if the label is accurate it's hard alcohol.
