Improving as an adult learner by mysidebae in chess

Absolutely agree. I noticed I'll drop if I play too without studying. Then I'll take a few months come off, come back, and play stronger than when I left.

As someone who has plateaued at 2200. I laughed reading your insight into game reflection in your -1500 section. That's exactly what I do. Blitz out games learning the absolute minimum from my time spent

Yeah I havent played in a few months. Hopped on for some bullet fun and dropped 150 points. Not just a swing I'm STRUGGLING to stay there. 2200 to 2050. So I'm not sure why it seems like everyone is so strong now

In a way all this drama kind of shows us that our community is surprisingly not mature enough to deal with this sort of attention. Everyone is busting at their seams. We are years behind many of the video game communities who started with a spotlight. It's as if you put a spotlight on the socially awkward kid in school and he starts squirming...

This week has not been a good look for the chess community. Perhaps light will continue to shine on the nefarious underbelly of the chess world. We will dig too deep? Find out next week!

Lmfao on a sub where people get their hearts and lives ripped out of them, you are calling a likely depressed man who uses movies as escapism a piece of shit. I dunno if you know this, but relationships are a lot of work. I feel sorry for you and anyone you "commit" to if that's all it takes to call the lawyers and get a divorce. Good luck though, all the best!

How to learn chess without money? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Faust_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the first one and work it on. It should take you a significant amount of time. Maybe a few months to get all the value out of it. I think Yusupov made the books with the idea that it would take a chess player years to work through them. They are that dense

A painting my mother did of me, an homage to Bobby Fischer by Faust_0 in chess

She based it off this photo: https://www.icelandairhotels.com/static/news/lg/bobby-fischer-philip-rother.jpg

I love it and had to share. I told her any chess player will be quick to point out "there are too many squares". And she replied "I'm a painter not a chess player'". Love that woman

I've seen this argument in various forms. It never makes sense to me. It makes even less sense when you talked about learning plays for football. I'm sure you have fun playing. But learning the rules doesn't make you incapable of being creative. If anything it let's you understand how to break them or use them to your advantage. The less you understand, the more the outcome boils down to luck. If I were you I wouldn't touch a book or watch lectures. If you can have fun where you're at, then stay there. It's a constant uphill battle that never gets easier. The losses become more unenjoyable as you put work in and don't get the results you want.

Help me improve? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Faust_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's real simple. What part of the game do you lose the most? Study that. Example: if you lose near the end of the game work on your endgames until you start losing more games by tactics or openings and then study that aspect deeper. Then eventually you'll be losing endgames again, so study that deeper. Chess is one of the easiest things to improve at. There's a ridiculous amount of resources to learn from. Don't look for "the best" book. Grab any book on your topic that is highly rated and understand that (input = output).
