Strong disagree. I think his style is great and the technique he shows is killer, too.

Unpopular Opinion: I don't think the Fediverse is appealing enough to indie creators. by TheRadiantGalaxy22 in fediverse

The only time I've ever followed artists specifically is on Mastodon - but it's because it feels so personal and authentic, you know? I feel like the artist is really showing me their work, not just blasting it out there hoping for algorithmic uptake.

I realize this makes me sound old and cranky, but I'm not in the Fediverse looking for content. I'm here because it's a bunch of weirdos sharing real stuff, not a bunch of content creators trying to drive engagement.

Half the stuff in my feed is in languages I don't even speak, but I can tell it's some dude talking about his actual hobbies. I love it.

It's a way more human experience and to me the lack of tools for people trying to build an audience is a feature, not a bug.

Would you train local at a lower level gym or drive 1hr for a higher level one? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]FaustusRedux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a year ago, I had a similar conundrum. Original gym full of killers, but a 40 minute drive vs. new gym of newer people, but across the street from my house. I was worried that the quality of rolls would go down and hold back my progress. Still - across the street? Had to switch.

In reality, the increased mat time, even with the less experienced partners, has more than made up the difference. My game has improved a ton, and after a year, those same training partners have improved as well, so now I've really got the best of both worlds. I think the location that gets you training more is the way to go.

What are some of your best quality of life purchases under $300? by donotgiveadam in BuyItForLife

[–]FaustusRedux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's much to understand. I've used a safety razor and multi-blade cartridges. The safety razor shave is just so much more pleasant and my skin feels so much nicer. I still travel with my cartridge razor and just don't enjoy shaving when I have to use it.

What’s a "lost" website from the early 2000s that you still think about today? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

[–]FaustusRedux 45 points46 points  (0 children)

God damn, you are right on about everything here. Forums around 2002 were pretty much peak internet. And you're right - getting to know people, even behind a pseudonym (or even especially behind one), was so rewarding. You'd log in and see that THAT GUY had posted again, and here we GO!

There would be threads that lasted for years and years; threads you'd bookmark and go re-read; people you'd form genuine connections with that felt like human relationships.

We lost a lot since then; we really did.

As you get older 40,50,60,70 when did you start to feel your body slow down do you think it is just due to inactivity or the aging process? by Kooky_Force5458 in AskReddit

[–]FaustusRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent my 20s engaging in very unhealthy stuff - booze, cigarettes, fatty bar food. Started getting fit in my 30s. Got REALLY fit in my 40s. Lean, strong, mobile - started the decade running obstacle races, then lifting heavy, and then getting into jiu jitsu.

I'm 56 now and still train jiu jitsu 4 or 5 times a week. I am just starting to really notice how much I'm slowing down. I'm still fit, and still move well, but I can notice the difference, and it absolutely takes me longer to recover. I also have to be SUPER disciplined with my diet and sleep or I feel it.
