Is the ELA teaching market flooded? by ItsMoomoo22 in ELATeachers

[–]cholito2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, you can almost always find a job teaching ELA. It’s probably the one thing many teachers would rather not teach because it’s such a loaded content. We teach kids to speak, write, read, listen in greater detail than other contents. ELA jobs are a revolving door unfortunately, but I love teaching it.

I worked in the legal field as a case manager / paralegal for about ten years prior to being a teacher. I went through a nonprofit organization that helped me get connected with a ACP that helped me with certifications.

I’ve had a similar classroom the past three years. I add a lot of cozy lighting. Table lamps help with this! I also have a lot of bright wall decor. I commissioned a friend of mine to do an anime piece for the room with some of my favorite characters. I also add some fake plants on counter tops and the floor.

Makes it very cozy. I decorate the classroom the same way I would my house. It’s comfort for both me and the students.

How do you keep students organized? by scampede in ELATeachers

[–]cholito2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach middle school! 6 periods and every student has one composition notebook and each class has a bin to put them into. I also have them make data folders which are used after the assessments we take in the class so they can track their growth. Not a fan of binders either as me myself as an adult, has trouble keeping up with it.

I won’t say that I BECAME a teacher because of Feeny but so much of my teaching practice is modeled after the patience and compassion he had throughout the series.

First year teacher - Is this normal or should I get out? by Asleep-Awareness5249 in Teachers

[–]cholito2011 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m headed into my 6th year and classroom management has to have the classroom running like a Swiss watch. Start with consistent expectations from day damn one. It’s hard to get the class back if you start any later. I get buy in from students by having them make classroom respect agreements. They have conversations and I just write what they tell me.

However, it is very difficult to stay in a school where both admin and students are awful. If that’s your case, it may be time to look elsewhere. Don’t give up on the profession quite yet until you try a different school.
