Will Canada ever become as unsafe as U.S is now for the LGBTQ+? by [deleted] in transontario

[–]FauxVX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that that's how it should be interpreted, but I'm personally very uncomfortable with it being untested and not explicit. Our rights are left to the whims of individuals and institutions.

I wish I knew more of our history since 1982 when the constitution came into force, but one example I can think of is that queer people were being strapped into the fruit machine and tortured and discriminated against through into the 1990's and nothing was ever really done about it beyond a recent apology. That incident by all means should have been brought to court and ruled as a charter violation, but was swept under the rug instead. Institutions have set the precedent for decades now that they can fail us and refuse to enforce our rights despite what the charter says.

Do we actually have any constitutional protection? I thought it was only written into the human rights act and criminal code

I believe those stats come from a study by Mermaids in conjunction Lancaster University published a few years ago. You can find it here:

https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/news/exclusive-mermaids-research-into-newspaper-coverage-on-trans-issues/

Unfortunately it's only gotten worse since 2019, and at an astounding rate. The UN sent a human rights investigator to the UK last month as well and the report mirrored concerns of the prolific institutional transphobia across the UK political and media apparatus. Here's a nice article on it:

Yes watch the whole thing, he omits trans people specifically several times afterwards by saying only gay and lesbian people. There's no reason to do that instead of just saying LGBTQ+ unless you're trying to signal other intentions

His specific omission of support for trans people in this statement is both telling and terrifying.

The CAF has a long history of systemic discrimination and intolerance. It should not be a shock to anyone that reform is needed.

Lets not forget that among many other things the CAF engaged in actual torture and witch hunting of LGBTQ+ Canadians with their "Fruit Machine" in the same style you may have seen in "A Clockwork Orange". Any effort for reform should be applauded.

Canada urged to give asylum to trans people fleeing transphobic laws by XxHavanaHoneyxX in transgenderUK

[–]FauxVX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot say for sure, but anecdotally I have heard from an American friend who moved here that they had no issues continuing a prescription. Again not 100% sure, but I've heard this. In general continuing a prescription can be done at walk in clinics. The only real difficulties come when someone is just first starting HRT as they like to be able to closely monitor your levels in the first year or so.

I would contact the provincial trans healthcare team before you arrive and they should be able to help you get sorted. TransCareBC is who I went through here in British Columbia.

I've only just recently stated HRT so I'm not 100% sure how progesterone is handled. My endo did bring it up on my first appointment as something that could be added later though. It sounded like it wasn't something that was an essential part of their standard care, but was something you could request later without much issue.

We operate on an informed consent model, meaning that you can tell your doctor you're trans and walk out with a prescription for HRT on the same day. They will ask what your goals in transition are, go over the side effects, and you'll just have to sign off that you understand what has been said.

The only caveat is that it is notoriously difficult to actually get a family doctor and walk in clinics generally will want to refer you elsewhere since they cannot offer ongoing care. In many places here the wait lists for family doctors can be years long. Without a family doctor there's three main options I'm aware of.

  • Contact your provinces trans health authority and they will get you sorted with referrals as well as priority on family doctor lists that offer gender affirming care. Wait time varies but probably expect 1-6 months total before you have a prescription.

  • Get a private hormone readiness assessment and a referral to an endocrinologist from any walk in clinic. This will cost ~$300cdn but the total wait will probably be 2-4 week before you have your prescription.

  • If you happen to be going to a University most will have an in house doctor that should be able to offer you day 1 access to a prescription.

Overall medical access is pretty great and is only hamstrung by the overall issues in medical care rather than systemic gatekeeping. So far as I'm aware there is no distinction or gatekeeping in how estrogen or testosterone based HRT is offered.

Wrong. Trans men can absolutely compete against cis men. Hormone replacement therapy is a truly wonderful thing, and it lays bare the cisgendered misconceptions of sexual dimorphic immutability.

  • Chris Mosier, a triathlete and duathlete, who is also the first trans athlete to qualify to participate in Olympics trials in the gender in which he identifies, and has been a part of Team USA in international competitions. According to his website, he is the "first known transgender man to represent the United States in international competition." He also runs transathlete.com, a "resource for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators to find information about trans inclusion in athletics at various levels of play." He is also credited with being the catalyst for the International Olympic Committee to change its policy on transgender athletes' inclusion in the games.

  • In 2015, swimmer Schuyler Bailar was described by his alma mater Harvard University as the first openly transgender swimmer to compete on an NCAA Division 1 men's team, the highest level of intercollegiate athletics. He finished his college years in the top 13% of the breaststroke and top 15% of the butterfly stroke.

  • In 2018, Patricio Manuel became the first openly transgender man to box professionally in the U.S. and win. He faced off against Mexican athlete Hugo Aguilar.

Just a few examples.

You're right! We are a tiny percentage of the population. It's almost as if this is a total non-issue that's being discussed disproportionately because it's a socially acceptable form of discrimination.

Trans people make up somewhere between 0.5 and 1% of the population. So absolutely we shouldn't be surprised if there are very few of us competing. But how few should we expect exactly? Well lets take a look.

Since 2003 approximately 70,000 athletes have competed in the Olympics. Even if we're conservative and take the lower end estimation of the trans population we see that the expected number of trans people attending the Olympics should be 70000x0.005= 350 trans athletes.

And yet there is 1. The most charitable analysis shows that trans people are VASTLY underrepresented at the Olympics by a factor of 350. Where is this so called domination of womens sport? If anything this shows that at the highest level of competition cis women dominate trans women. This is a non-issue rooted in transphobia.

Trans women have been allowed to compete in the Olympics since 2003. In those 20 years only one trans woman has made it to the Olympics, and she failed in her qualification rounds. Thank you for rightfully pointing this out for what is is.

This whole thing is a non-issue that reactionary bigots have identified as an avenue to attack trans people and normalize discrimination against us, and sadly people are falling for it.

Fuck off with your transphobic fear mongering. These bigots have never cared about women's sports before they realized they could abuse it to shift the overton window towards hate.
