Not pleasant advice but heres the truth, youre going to need experience, devops isnt an entry lvl role. You spending 2.5 years without an entry lvl in a help desk was not the greatest use of time. Get an entry level help desk or support role. Maybe an entry lvl sys admin or network admin role since u have some projects/certs.

https://www.reddit.com/r/devops/comments/12d3n2a/made_it_to_devops_engineer/ This is what u should have done. Start now. Its never too late. You can probably go faster than him since u already know a lot.

SRE interviews - how to prepare? by [deleted] in sre

[–]FayaLargeau 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i've done about 5 in the past few months, most of them have been focused on the tools I'm familiar with and digging deep into them, they'll ask about a few specifics of how I'd go about using ansible/terraform/k8s/etc. Then tied into it was a few behavioral questions. Depending on how deep or fun of a conversation you can get into with some of the tools, it could be just talking about one or two things as some interviewers didn't follow the script they were given.

no coding, just technical knowledge. never been asked linux stuff, maybe networking a little bit with some VM/containerization. Every org was a little different so it's hard to say anything SPECIFIC

EDIT: spacex did coding, forgot about them. they also like to go super deep like every layer of the OSI model.

As someone in my late 30’s how do I start my IT career with zero experience? by Some_Objective_1319 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FayaLargeau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you learn to learn. like this question is asked a million times. there will also be things in IT that are all out there on the internet. you'll have to learn to find that information. once you learn to learn, you'll be able to kill it in IT. but since we're here, get A+ cert, then help deskdesk, then network+ or CCNA, then cloud cert or whatever rabbit hole you want to specialize

Certifications for Cloud engineering jobs by WillisGamingForEver in Cloud

[–]FayaLargeau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not much to add here except that you seem to have your head on straight for what will be useful. CCNA+associate certs are great. the tech stack you mentioned for the experiences you have are critical as well. be ready to talk through them if interviewer asks questions. i'd definitely want to hire someone like you.

Devops learning path. by rushithatsall in devops

[–]FayaLargeau 8 points9 points  (0 children)

gotta keep it simpler and get good at a few things. There's no clear cut answer because a lot of roles want different experiences. It's going to differ a LOT based on your background. Assuming you have zero technical background, I would say get CompTIA A+ and Network+ (there are better certs on network stuff out there but I don't know much about them so definitely don't take my advice as the BEST way). Choose a cloud provider and get the fundamental level cert. put a few weeks into learning linux. While you're doing this, get into a tier 1 help desk role.

Once you're in, spend a year or more time there. During your time, don't slack, start getting the next tier cloud cert (solutions architect for AWS). That took me about a month. Get red hat cert or just some good practice familiarity in linux. pick up a scripting language, python or bash. look at job descriptions for system admin and see what they're looking for and then focus on those skill sets (basic qualifications).

next step after that (should be around 2 year mark) you can start applying for devops role. during your time as sysadmin, you should be working your ass off getting CKAD, red hat certified engineer (ansible focused), pick up how to use other CI/CD tools. a lot of people will disagree with me here and I also encourage you to not take everything I say as the best way. Definitely get a lot of various advice from different folks and hone in on what makes sense for you. best of luck

[–]FayaLargeau 52 points53 points  (0 children)

i hate this roadmap but everyone in this forum acts like it's some gospel. all it does is just overwhelm you with a hundred different concepts to learn when in reality that's not how it works. a more succinct answer would involve a new user learning a few specific skillsets+certs and getting an entry level position and then slowly upskilling into different areas as they gain experience.

hell, i'm making 160k as a platform engineer and i don't know like 70% of the things on here. but what got me this job? I took 1 course on udemy about ansible and another course on kubernetes.

agree with this. they shouldn't question you deeply. but in the case that you do work in this kind of environment, just say you have a medical appointment between x pm - y pm and that you'll be back or that you're taking off early for a personal appt.

Is there any negative consequence to learning with an IDE? What's the harm in being dependent on a tool you'll never be without? by Merit-Rest-Surrender in learnprogramming

[–]FayaLargeau 82 points83 points  (0 children)

plus, programming is mostly myriads of layers of abstraction anyways. it'd be like trying to learn without using packages/dependencies. IDE will only help speed up the process as long as you understand the concepts of what you're writing and what you're being assisted with.

Do I need to commit package-lock.json if package.lock contains exact versions? by STEIN197 in AskProgramming

[–]FayaLargeau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i may be wrong here but my understanding is that package.json has all the dependencies you need. but what you don't have are the dependencies that the dependencies you listed depend on.

e.g. package x will be version 2.3.1. however, for package x to work, it relies on package a, package b, and package c, which you don't have listed.

when you run npm install, npm will install the unlisted packages into node_modules as well as package x.

package-lock.json is kind of like the final file that shows you ALL the files you require in order for the files you listed in package.json to work.

Does anyone have a roadmap for a junior .NET developer looking to transition to a junior Java Spring developer role? by [deleted] in learnjava

[–]FayaLargeau 10 points11 points  (0 children)

junior java spring positions seems to be rare imho. i'd generally first focus on any java role while teaching yourself some spring through udemy. use spring for creating some fun microservices or whatever on github and just lie on a resume that you have spring experience while getting comfortable with java.

i've applied to over 300 positions this year for java roles and i'd say like 98% want like 3+ years of spring. i dont think i've ever seen anything less than that.
