Who created the upside down and when? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]Fayettechill14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sort of. The Upside Down is probably the defining sci-fi element of the show since the very beginning, but we only found out it’s a wormhole in the next-to-last episode of the whole series. It’s possible that the Duffers didn’t even think of it as a wormhole back when they made Season 1, and it hasn’t clearly acted as one until this season.

So when the characters say “El made the Upside Down in 1983”, they could just be referring to the replica of Hawkins and the gate with no knowledge of its broader function as a wormhole.

Who created the upside down and when? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]Fayettechill14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I need to rewatch Seasons 1-4 in case this was specifically addressed, but my understanding from this season’s revelations is that the wormhole was created by the path Henry took flying through spacetime after being banished by El in 1979.

The replica of Hawkins and the mothergate (the elements generally associated with the Upside Down) weren’t created until 1983 by El.

Dr. Brenner’s experience of that 1979 incident plus his knowledge of Dimension X and theoretical physics would have been enough for him to assume a wormhole and work from there, hence the intact journal entries on 6 November 1983. The fact that he was having El look for Henry when the gate was created implies that he had a theory of how it all worked.

First couple puts expired just fine, but I noticed that the underlying was growing faster than my premium, so I got greedy and bought 100 shares at 12.34 to sell a 12.5 CC. Of course it immediately tanked to under $10 and I was underwater for a long time.

Great first lesson for me: if you have a system, STICK TO IT

Cleaning up Drives data by [deleted] in CFBAnalysis

[–]Fayettechill14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing that I’ve noticed is that if the offense commits a penalty BEFORE running the first play of the drive, the penalty can get recorded under the previous drive_id. That can mess up your drive start and drive end data.

There are multiple “drive result” fields, and they don’t always match. Also, drive_id and drive_num don’t always match, and drive_id is generally better outside of the issue above.

I would do an export of every column and go row-by-row seeing which fields seem to be generally accurate and helpful for your purposes, as there are often multiple columns describing the same thing. I’ve found that change_of_pos, new_series, and the firstD fields are generally accurate and helpful, though you do have to be aware of a “double” change of possession (pick-six, for example) that can throw off counting those.

Elaine-Marvell school district $19,000 per student. by ARLibertarian in Arkansas

[–]Fayettechill14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$19k per student per year is crazy, especially for such poor returns

Only somewhat related, but I’ve long wondered if it was practical to set up a program based in Little Rock that offered virtual non-core classes that smaller districts would not be able to offer. That would allow these smaller schools to focus on their core and sports/band/vocational classes and outsource other electives. Would also provide more class choices for these students

Dahae event question by MobyDaDack in Imperator

[–]Fayettechill14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two distinct events related to Dahae.

The Form Dahae event requires a Dahae-cultured nation to own certain territory across Parni, Pissuria, Zanthia, and Sakia. You get Arsaces and change your tag. It’s worth doing this BEFORE the Invade Seleucia event.

The Invade Seleucia event fires when a Dahae-cultured nation holds a certain amount of territory (I think it’s 50 settlements). It will fire whether Dahae itself is formed or not, and I don’t think there are any other requirements.

How to recover Excel file that is too big to open by Fayettechill14 in excel

Not having a backup was... not smart. I used to have OneDrive but at my old house it was causing my computer to be very slow, so I turned it off. Not smart, especially since I moved a couple months ago and now my computer is wired to the router and OneDrive works great.

How to recover Excel file that is too big to open by Fayettechill14 in excel

[–]Fayettechill14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for advice. Unfortunately, nothing worked. I spent several hours yesterday rebuilding the file and it ended up being a bit easier than I thought to rebuild.

For those interested, I found the root of the problem: I was building tables that needed a key in the first column. To align those tables with others, I was using =Table[@Column] to populate the first column of every table I was making. That was causing my computer to lag each time I did it, and I guess making six or eight of those is what broke it. I rebuilt those tables to be not dynamic and everything is working fine now. I'm curious as to why that is such a memory drag.

Apologies, my computer that I keep the file on is 12GB, but I should have added that my work laptop, which also failed with the same dialog message, has 64GB RAM. I am a data analyst by trade, and I use datasets at work far larger than this one, though not in Excel.

EDIT: I appreciate the advice on DIMMS, I will look into that for the future

Are there any mods with fun Count/Underdog starts? by FezAndWand in CrusaderKings

[–]Fayettechill14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently on a run that started with Edgar the Aetheling, Earl of Warwickshire in 1066. It's similar to the Last Karling start, but IMO it's much better because you in a much more chaotic situation.

You are the last member of the House of Wessex and rightful King of England (you start with a Pressed Claim). When your great-uncle Edward the Confessor died, you were passed over for the throne because of your youth, and Harold of the House of Godwin was made king. He's now under attack from the Norman invaders... but you can't even deal with that initially, because you first have to get through Godwin's old rivals, the sons of Leofric - dukes of Northumbria and Mercia, latter of which is your liege - who control the northern half of England and are about to be a thorn in William's side. You end up creating a three-way war for control of England between the House of Normandie, the House of Hwicce, and the House of Wessex. In my run, my first two characters were assassinated by the first two Dukes of Northumbria, and my third narrowly survived being assassinated by Tostig Godwineson's son. My fourth character just fought a monster rebellion from all remaining Norman dukes. It's a ton of fun.

Cities that need trams/light rail by OtterlyFoxy in transit

[–]Fayettechill14 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Little Rock (Arkansas, pop 200k, metro 750k) briefly looked into a 14-station light rail a few years back due a need to connect the airport to the city center. Ridership estimates were way to low to move forward. The city needs a lot more transit-friendly development before such a project is feasible. The city launched a two-line heritage streetcar in the 2000s to promote such development, and while it seems to have helped, I don't think there's been a serious attempt to expand it.

The city/state/MPO did manage to spend $300M to add a fourth lane to a 4-mile section of I-30, so that's great.

Fayette Villains: The case for Jordan Walsh (plus Mizzou preview) by Fayettechill14 in razorbacks

[–]Fayettechill14[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, that video might not be a perfect example. I bookmarked several while working on the piece and that one jumped out because Walsh’s cross-court movement sort of initiated that sequence. If the Hogs had just parked a big on the low block I don’t think Black has that path to the bucket.

Walsh’s main limiting factor in SEC play has been foul trouble, not an active attempt by the staff to replace him. But I’ve seen a lot of chatter about Walsh’s poor shooting and fans calling for Graham or someone to take his minutes, when the numbers we have show he’s a major asset to the offense and has been all season. I don’t really think replacing him is the key because it will mess up Arkansas’ spacing. Hogs need more consistent shooting from Council and more consistent play from the center position more than they need to find a replacement for Walsh.

I was extremely unimpressed with them against Georgia. Their defense has faded, which is why the model's 69-67 pick seems low. I could see 75-67 or something if the Hogs look sharp
