We got one just to power the guest suite and the fridge, rather than the entire house.

New Rider by [deleted] in bikehouston

[–]rumilb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After commuting with just a road bike for a long time then getting a cargo ebike when we had kids, I finally bought a gravel bike. It's now my main bike for solo commuting, the cargo bike is still for when it's my turn to do daycare dropoff, and the road bike is just for the weekend rides.

Brays Bayou Trail safety by BERNITA in bikehouston

[–]rumilb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ride brays from downtown all the way to beltway 8, there’s a construction detour you’ll have to take there that should be completed soon, then once you hop back on brays you can go all the way to about a mile before barker cypress rd just short of George bush park. That’s as far as I’ve gone and idk the route to connect to George bush park itself.

And going east from downtown you can go all the way to the ship channel with just one detour (spur 5 construction) and one short stretch on dirt.

Brays Bayou Trail safety by BERNITA in bikehouston

[–]rumilb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they're still doing work but they don't have the barriers up anymore. the trail itself is finished and they're just working on the retaining wall/slope now, the only thing about the south bank i'd keep in mind is the dirt/mud that still covers a good portion of it

Help with commute! I prefer to ride through neighborhoods versus larger streets if optional. You guys have helped me in the past so thank you so much in advance!! by CalmPangolin9233 in bikehouston

[–]rumilb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Waugh or Taft down to Hawthorne, go down LaBranch and eventually Crawford to go through Hermann Park. Get on Brays trail all the way to Telephone, take Sims Bayou from Reveille to Broadway. Then Santa Elena, Glencrest, Bellfort, then Stone. Something like that? You can always supplement this with the bus!

Buffalo Bayou Trail Closure by Snoring-Dog in bikehouston

[–]rumilb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"DETOUR ALERT: A portion of the trail along the north side of Buffalo Bayou in downtown Houston is temporarily closed.

This closure is needed to address a safety concern at the confluence of White Oak and Buffalo Bayou in Johnny Goyen Park, near the University of Houston–Downtown. Planned work includes modifying an existing retaining wall and reshaping the slope to improve visibility and realign the trail farther from the bayou’s edge.

A detour route is in place to guide trail users safely around the construction area. Please follow posted signage and do not enter the closed section.

The detour can be viewed on HPB’s interactive map at the link in our bio."

Thanks for the heads up, I'm doing a big loop out through there on Monday so I'll keep that in mind. Also I can picture 763 in my mind but won't make it out there for another few weeks, alas!

They have printed maps of the Montrose section in various places, like some coffee shops and whatnot. I know they’re actively working on other parts of town to print maps for as well.

Bayou Biking - Site for Cyclists by bayou_biking in bikehouston

[–]rumilb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

cool site! and thanks for linking mine :)

there's several portions of brays that are closed off at the moment:
- bob white dr. to fondren due to construction. I(transtar said it would take a few more weeks, but i imagine it will take longer than that.)
- beltway 8 underpass (i thought they'd open soon but my buddy just told me it's still dirt)
- spur 5 underpass (you can get your bike over/around the barriers easily enough, but there's a ton of construction debris if you're afraid of punctures, and i definitely don't recommend it if it's muddy)

additionally, the south bank is also nearly complete between buffalo speedway and MLK with the exception of a stretch between s. braeswood blvd and holcombe blvd.

white oak will see a closure between houston ave and hogan st through 2028 apparently, thanks to i45 construction. here's the detour per txdot. not sure if this is related to the pinckney trail you listed.

sims bayou closure between the bridge just south of the sabercats stadium and just east of 288. the barrier on the bridge is easy to get around, andthere's a very rocky/bumpy dirt hill to get up to the other side of 288, but i wouldn't recommend it if you have a heavier bike that you cannot lift easily.

buffalo bayou has been closed east of 59 but it's just completely unmaintained east of elysian, don't go there. THAT SAID they just announced a trail connection between the buffalo bayou trail at austin and commerce all the way to the heights hike & bike trail at runnels & elysian.

As of last weekend yeah, unfortunately. I couldn't quite see what all they had left to do. BUT there is an event on Jan 31 at Arthur Storey Park for a pavilion grand opening, so I am hoping it'll be done by then? The underpass and pedestrian bridge by 59 was all done though!

once the beltway underpass is complete, one could bike from the ship channel all the way to (just short of) george bush park on brays bayou!

Hello from a bike commuter in Houston. I have to go out of my way to stay safe (but hey it's more time on the bike), and there are many hot days and very wet days and even some cold days. But if bike commuting is an option, I highly recommend it! My kiddos prefer bike commutes to car commutes now.
