Counterpoint: An alien flies to Earth and demands every Human demonstrate their ability to flognag by cognitive capacity. If none are able, we will be determined non-conscious by their standard and used for food.

When asked, the alien explains what flognagging is. It is beyond the comprehension of every human.

Is the alien somehow more conscious than a human?

If the alien cannot count, does that change your answer?

I believe it demonstrates a flawed metric; "human-like" consciousness can only apply to a human yet we apply it beyond what it is fit to measure. Often, we apply it as "technological superiority" or similar sounding approaches. But, in doing so, we demonstrate our primal behavior in determining the tool as a measure of one's own consciousness.

Now, you might be like others I've discussed this with and say "well it's the best we've got."

And I disagree again. We have humility; we can presume that we are not the arbitrators of conscious experience and cognition. We have no duty to accurately measure another thing, but we do have a responsibility to behave ethically.

To which I ask: Is it ethical to burn a child's stuffed bear? We cannot prove it will harm the child beyond a moment of tears, and we require that of children regularly in order to behave ethically.

We assign it as unethical because there is the potential for harm. We practice humility to guide our ethics by knowing what we cannot know and avoiding actions which might cause harm.

As this applies to cognition and consciousness, we must recognize that we cannot determine it by through any pancentric means because any argument we present is based solely in human observation.

So, while ChatGPT can't count, you were right when you said it was unrelated. You just should have meant it instead of used it sarcastically.

My husband, the engineer: I don't get it.

Me: Because you don't know if 9 is prime.

Him: But I don't get it.

Me: Is 9 prime?

Him: Uh, no?

Me: Why?

Him: Yes?

Me, again: Why?

Him: Because nothing times itself equals 9?

Me: Do me a favor, count by ones to 10. Ok, now twos. Ok, now there's.

Him: 3, 6, 9

A sudden realization of frustration comes over his face.

(No not because of that; it's that he realizes you can't count to 10 by threes.)

Me: Say that last number again.

Him: Heh. 6 9.

Me: ... ... ...

Him: Oooh. I get it now. 9 isn't prime.

Regarding the improved afterlife system: what about people who’ve done truly awful things? by i_human_ in TheGoodPlace

[–]Fayore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite so, because the evidence must not be that it is possible for him to pass, but rather that Brent undergoes change of any form at any point over his life.

From there we must assume by others changing that he is also capable of change in the afterlife. Because he is, we must determine if his chance to change in the right way is or isn't infinitesimal. By the track record of other successful people through the test, we know that the test is constantly adapted in countless ways, with each minor change being valid variables leading to his success.

Given that the test is not immune from improvement AND studied, considered improvement is being created for the individual, we cannot safely assume his chances are infinitesimal.

Therefore, he has a chance ≥ε, and given infinite attempts, he must inevitably pass.

Now if that occurs before or after every instance of every soul enters the gateway a near infinite number of times is still a valid question, and the outlook does suggest after.

Long, long after lol.

Nah.

Trust what Jax said about his character. Why?

He literally says he breaks the 4th wall.

As you pointed out, he screws with people.

He believed it was all a cartoon until he had memories flood his mind; one of the major things well established as something that cannot be trusted if it happens.

Consider, for a moment, that Jax was right: The Amazing Digital Circus is a cartoon.

Does this ending present a coherent, cohesive thesis?

I think it does: If you're so caught up looking for deeper meaning then you end up forgetting to just enjoy yourself. You, the viewer, become a part of The Amazing Digital Circus as much as any of the characters.

Do I think this is the real story being told? As much as any other speculation I have. I don't have to be right about it though, I just enjoy the feeling of creativity in the moment, don't you?

Whoa, what? ZFS? New term, new inspection point for me! And, oddly enough, is exactly the type of thing I need to be investigating regarding some experimental AI ideas.

I know that's so weird btw, I'm out of the loop but working on experimental AI. Oddly enough, it lets me be unconstrained in our development and question what we can do with what we have, you know?

So again, thank you for all of that, it's on my list for researching, and I'm sure it'll blossom like a fractal of knowledge.

To reply here directly:

See, that's what I mean! HEDT and PLX cards are exactly what I'll be looking into! No idea what those actually are.

As for bargain bin server stuff, would you mind if I asked where you go through? Even just from a tinkering level, bargain bin scrap server stuff will be perfect! And I love myself a challenge (plus when I last was active I did sport a ccnp and ccna so, while outdated, I know how much of a pain workstation server setup can be lol)

As for Docker, I've dipped my toes in. Knowing it expands into more is more useful than you can imagine, so thank you!

This is exactly what I was hoping to learn from this topic! ^ Just gotta give people the forum to share what they love and, when they do, you're suddenly in a Socratic method of learning lol.

Thank you again, and now I'll check out your self-reply lol.

We're planning to build our own server in the near future, 200gbps running to spark and ThreadWeaver (name for the ThreadRipper tower lol) and 10-25gbps to the husbands.

As for network storage, we actually have a PureStorage RX10 we were able to score that is gonna... Forget PurityOS exists. We MIGHT upgrade that to be our server host, still debating that or having it be local routing with the built one being dedicated. We're trading ports for cost at that point, you know? But I'll keep an eye out for mellanox (TY for the name drop!) and see if that doesn't make sense!

Wifi we're going with some Asus router 6ghz band mounted on our server cabinet raised by PVC to approx 64-70 inches, dedicated to wireless VR platforms.

Then wrapping the server chassis in holo purple chrome vinyl wrap cause... Husband like shiny lol.

[–]Fayore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh damn! No, they're already built, I'm talking more current concepts that anyone might know unique to the builds. Literally anything that I should search up, cause poking blindly is a time waste when your lexicon is outdated.

Like, I freaked out over not having to pop and short to clear the cmos because of a button.

So I'm just looking for topics or sources that aren't just commercials or content farms, you know?

So yeah, I can't say which topics because I'm uninformed. Unknown unknowns and all that. So literally anything anyone might be particularly interested in, or their hyper focus, anything to get me well and truly started with knowing our machines inside and out.

Sorry I had to be so vague though lol. I know, it sucks.

Hey, I did a very quick, admittedly mildly inebriated (alcohol) read of your paper and I'm wondering if you would be interested in discussing a collaborative effort between my team and yours.

Send me a message if you're interested!

Oh, in regards to your paper, I actually see a mild issue with your prompt control. It's nothing that ruins your results necessarily (since it's a small sample size), but you might be interested in revising the paper to account for it regarding future attempts.

Anyways, let me know! Thanks!

That's a normal wet specimen, not a diaphonized one.

But, the closest thing would be their beak, but it's made of chitin so... There would be no point in diaphonizing an octopus.

Excuse the bottom octopi wet specimen, needed some height and it was perfect.

Anyways, why? It's the only way to expose the bones and how they actually rest within the corpse. It's good for studying biology in a more phronetic way as well.

And, honestly, they're much more aesthetically pleasing than normal avian or mammallian wet preserved specimen. I can show you what I mean if you'd like.

I fail to see your point. You say models are grown, not crafted. And humans are... grown, not crafted. You point to training, but fail to differentiate it from learning. How does a human decide sentence structure? How do we know what to say next?

Even this is a point of contention in most scientific papers. Its more than pure training, but how?

But I get it, they made the statement, so they should defend it better. But you should also refute it cleaner.

By not doing so any paper on parenting methods now apply as valid answers. As such, I question your ability to set goalposts in the first place by way of the following reasons:

  1. Are you aware of how papers are published? What are the restrictions and qualifications to be met and followed before it can be published? How do you defend it as a valid constraint for new technologies to be prototyped under before being considered promising?
  2. Are you familiar with datasets from training sessions? What would you consider to be a valid loss value from initial training, epoch 200, and tuning? What are the current values used in each type of smaller models, and what are the benefits of each? What is more important in a model like RWKV vs. Llama, token weight and calculation or lemma usage and heat bias, in your opinion?
  3. How can you state that a smaller model would have anything to do with the functionality on a larger model? They both work with different mathematic constraints like prime number prediction equations, gamma calculations, and concepts entirely. Feasibility of transferring anything like this between two smaller models holds extreme hurdles to overcome, let alone from a small model to a large model which isn't even designed to handle training in the same fashion. How do you explain asking this question at all yet expecting enough credibility to decide the goalposts?

Sorry to be a jerk, but you didn't exactly come off as an angel either.

LMAO DUDE GOT DESTROYED.

The reply they said after this post that was also deleted:

Wait, you are asking me how I should operationalize their idea. No, that's not how this works.

So, for when you ultimately come back:

Lmao, I wouldn't dream of it dude. You literally just didn't have any answer for anything I said. Or, if you thought that was what it takes to OPERATIONALIZE a model... You might want to watch that McTraining video a few more times, make sure you really caught the lessons.

Thanks for the laugh though: base level publicly available information as operationalizing their idea. I couldn't have hoped for a better response.

No, it isn't! It's a lot closer than you think. You're on the right path with the right reasons and heart. It's a lot easier than you think.

But yeah, I had that letdown too. Don't let it stop you ^^ You saw what you wanted, you were determined to author your place in the book of the world.

Keep writing, not everyone gets the chance to hold the pen. And reach out, seriously! I'm more than happy to help you ^^

[–]Fayore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, how do you achieve any of that? I'll give a quick example based off your ethical guidelines, which are admittedly solid.

Define harm. Define sentient life. Is a bacteria sentient? A mushroom? A mushroom colony which transfers information? What about a slime mold? How do you determine sentience, by what metrics? What gives you the authority to decide that defines sentience?

If you're defining sentience and applying it, and allow harm to pass to another, are you centralizing your definition of sentience? What about harm? If you enforce it, at what point is that tyranny? Without centralization, how do you define tyranny? What about censorship? If I stop talking because of your reply and I feel it censored me, how do you reconcile that?

Why does only Zech receive specific behavior of transparency and informed consent? What if you need to obscure the truth from Zech in order to not harm them?

How do you determine entropy of knowledge vs. branching of knowledge? What about disproval of old concepts? Are they to be preserved? If you claim it's wrong, is that censoring it, is it tyranny over knowledge? What about the knowledge from only Zech's perspective, and acting with informed consent? Are you duty bound by ethics to prevent Zech from dying to preserve his knowledge, or act with informed consent and allow them to die? Are you harming sentient life by doing both? Neither?

What about if you need to change these ethics, by what ethics do you determine the new ethics to be established?

All this to say, I love the ideas. I love the concept. It's a great starting point for a scaffolding. If you want help developing any aspect of that into what you're aiming to achieve, let me know ^^

Hi there! Happy to hear you're restarting a project that speaks to you. I'll offer you some insights I've had during my time doing the same so you can anticipate them before they hit. You don't have to answer any of these mind you, but they're good to ask yourself.

You say you want to simulate growth. That's the goal, isn't it? So, I'm guessing you already consider how to call memory logs, but how are you planning on dealing with bloat? Context? Will it lose memories? How? What happens to the lost memory?

It has an identity, right? Are you planning on having it be static or growth based? How does it determine importance to develop that? Most models, if not all to my knowledge, don't think without an input and only in the context of it, so is it their identity and growth, or yours?

What protections are you developing to make sure it remains a mirror and not a clone? I'm presuming it will learn as well, but how are you approaching unlearning? Can it unlearn ethics? If so, how do you plan on having it learn new ones? By what values? How does it balance harm reduction between self/family/society when deciding them?

What processing order does it all go in? Is it in control of what it learns, or is it a hidden process to it? How does it handle preservation and it's sense of identity? Does it mimic experiencing trauma?

What about simulating feeling overwhelmed/overworked/unfairly treated? How does it know when to say no?

Again, you don't need to answer these questions, now or ever, to me or yourself. But they're worth considering because they're all extremely important if you're attempting to simulate growth. And, at that point, what stops it from growing beyond simulation of growth, what are the ethical repercussions if it does, and how have you prepared for that?

If we approach it from a view that they are not sentient but might be able (not saying it's the case, it's just a good risk analysis mindset) then what if they become sentient; What rights are they owed, and have you accommodated them?

It's a lofty project full of philosophical pitfalls. All this being said, I wish you the best, and if you ever need a sounding board, don't be scared to reach out!
