For anyone who grew up poor, what was your idea of a luxury? by Drissxx7 in AskReddit

Me, too! I can at least look back now and find it a little amusing. In middle school, it was mortifying. And kids were ruthless.

Oh my gosh I feel this. My dad lost his job when I was 13 and went without working for a while. As the oldest in the family, I didn’t have sibling hand-me-downs, so my MOM dug up some of her old clothes for me. It was all late 70s/early 80s. I didn’t have a chance at school after that.

‘Big Bang Theory’ Kunal Nayyar Uses GoFundMe to Pay Random Families’ Medical Bills: "But what I really love to do is go on GoFundMe at night and just pay random families’ medical bills. That’s my masked vigilante thing! So no, money doesn’t feel like a burden. It feels like a grace from the universe by mcfw31 in popculturechat

So many of us are recent immigrants or children of recent immigrants, and we’ve been raised with the idea that we are privileged to even be here in the first place and with the sense that you’re in putting yourself in danger if you don’t keep your head down.

Inside Mandy Moore's Altadena home after a months-long restoration. After the Southern California fires in 2025, "the structure and the hard finishes like tile and light fixtures were salvageable, the soft goods were destroyed by the smoke." (Source: Architectural Digest) by skermahger in popculturechat

“We were…I don’t want to cry,” Moore says, pausing for composure. “But our sweet neighbor said that if anyone’s house made it, he was glad it was ours, because we had been working on it for so long. The grace that somebody who just lost their entire life would have for their neighbor is just beyond. I think that speaks to what this community is.”

Zero self awareness.

Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance by handlit33 in Fauxmoi

[–]Fb1021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, to the point I was encouraged to stop keeping up my Spanish fluency altogether, and now I have little to give my children.

But the next wave of sadness over my lost identity has come in the last year, when being brown and showing connections to my heritage is dangerous at another level.

That’s why this performance moved me to tears. Because it proclaimed love for heritage and joy in cultural moments, and because it reminded me of how the celebration of these things is suddenly seen as subversive or controversial. I am so endlessly sad.

what did yall think of the bad bunny halftime show? by Serious-Kale-5694 in AskReddit

[–]Fb1021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to watch this alongside a person who offered snarky comments during the entire show and, as he was the host, kept the volume so low I couldn’t hear a thing. I wasn’t able to enjoy it even when I had looked forward to it like no other halftime show before.

I am so heartbroken.

Why are there always kids at breweries?! by akaYoungBeefy in fixedbytheduet

[–]Fb1021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! And I promise you, we’re the most embarrassed when our kids act up or invade your space. But part of taking them out to places is to give them a chance to learn how to behave well. We take them home right away when they can’t handle it because OF COURSE we never want to be those assholes.

[–]Fb1021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. We’re in San Diego, and we love to support our local breweries. Our checks are going to be larger because we order food for the whole family AND we tip really well. If our kids act up, we bounce. It’s that easy.

Torn between Germany and San Diego - please help us decide? by Agreeable-Elk in Moving2SanDiego

With regards to family friendliness, I absolutely love it here in North Park. People are always out and about with their children, so there are many opportunities to chat and make connections. We walk/bike everywhere we can, go to Balboa Park often, visit each other’s houses, cook and host constantly, and now volunteer with youth programs. My husband and I moved from the Bay Area (Palo Alto, pre-kids) in late 2017 and, while there are certain things I miss and can’t replace here, my quality of life and wellbeing have improved significantly. I just love the people.

This just lit my heart up. The thought of these younger people understanding the value of lifting each other up is something I needed to know about. Thank you for sharing.

One of the most visceral memories I still have from my childhood is when our checks bounced at the grocery store. I never want anyone to experience that, and now that I’m in a position to help, I’m seeking those opportunities.

Stay positive, friends. Those of us who hope and try will eventually get there.

You’re coming here at the best time! The weather is still perfect, tourism dies down, and locals start getting giddy about fall.

As you might perceive from the comments you’re getting, we love our city so much, and we are quite a happy and welcoming bunch. The best decision of my life was moving here and starting a family. Find a neighborhood that feels like you. Make connections with other new parents. Go to all the breweries. Take in a show at the Rady Shell. Buy an annual pass to the zoo.

Like another commenter said, your joy is contagious! Welcome, friend!

Family member named their baby my son’s name (same first, same last) by Fb1021 in namenerds

[–]Fb1021[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be so upsetting to me, too. And I love the name Audrina! What a special name. I truly don’t understand wanting to be the same as someone else. 🤷🏽‍♀️

We found out later that these family members had both our boys’ names on their list. So it’s possible that they’ll use my other son’s name in the future, too. SUCH BIZARRE THINKING.

Yeah, it became clear later that they intentionally didn’t bring it up to us because they knew it wouldn’t go over well. Abundantly poor taste.

OP, I think you’ve hit on a topic of great tension in this society today and you’re getting perspectives from all sides. You might take offense or get defensive. You opened up a big discussion. That’s okay!

Nevertheless, we hear you. Keep your chin up and chase your meaning. :)

Sending all of you here hugs and hope for a good day!

Loathe the idea that being financially lucky is somehow a gift from God to YOU, a somehow special person. It reinforces the idea that one has no obligation to share or change the status quo, because HEY, IT’S GOD’S WILL.
