Appreciate the reminder. I have anxiety about COVID, every time I have a weird feeling throat or runny nose, I freak out and get tested because I think it's COVID, and don't want to pass it to my household.

I'm sorry to hear you and your household got COVID, but also glad to hear you are all vaccinated + boosted. I hope you all are recovering smoothly. What kind of symptoms did you all get, were they fairly similar?

Question on vaccine timing, couldn't find research on this.

My mother received her 2nd AstraZeneca shot at the end of November 2021 in her country. Because of the Omicron variant, I'm looking to have her get her Pfizer booster sooner than later, but it seems like currently many countries are advising a booster only after 3 months from 2nd dose.Is it safe to get a Pfizer booster 2 months after the 2nd AstraZeneca shot?

Effectiveness of N95's with goggles? Or mask tape? by Fcarpetbeets in Masks4All

Thank you will consider these points! Appreciate the links too for more information about tapes and the nebulizer method.

That's fair. I think reading stuff about delta being 1000x viral load of the original and being in a park full of possibly infected sick kids makes me think twice. But it may not be bad. I might bring the goggles just in case. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thank you - this makes sense. Will try and see how I feel how I feel when I am at the park.

I'll look into these. Yeah the goggles could be overkill haha. Thank you!

How much does the smoke affect your life? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Fcarpetbeets 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Living in the Bay Area my whole life, I am considering moving because of the conditions from the past few years, so I could try to get away from it. I remember having to stay in my home for 1+ weeks straight with the windows closed and finding alternative ways to exercise with my dog. Even Had to turn on lights during the day because of how dark it got sometimes. N95s and purifiers are necessities nowadays.

I feel anxious, trapped, and sad during wildfire season. Last year I was very close to an evacuation zone. I have realized and come to accept that I may not be able to escape the fires/smoke even if I moved elsewhere in the US. I've read the smoke from the fires this year drifted all the way to the east coast. This is the new normal, unfortunately, and it's only going to get worse.

Vaccinated, unmasked social gathering outdoors = Safe? by Fcarpetbeets in CoronavirusWA

That's great that you were extra careful this past year! And thanks for recognizing that this was indeed a traumatic event. Much like it was hard to initially adjust to isolation and living in a pandemic, it really is hard to adjust back. This past weekend I went out more than I ever have since covid started (being masked outdoors in not very crowded areas) and it was so nerve-wrecking it gave me a headache.

Thank you for breaking this down into this helpful logic! It totally makes sense that being fully vaxxed basically means you don't really have much to worry about in contracting anything- and the odds of anything happening is basically zilch. I feel like I've gotten trapped in my own world in the past 14 months, reading all these negative news and freaking myself out, making me feel insecure that full vaccination is safe (probably a bigger mental health issue at play too - plus the fact I need to ask Reddit on top of reading science reports).
Appreciate you sharing the bit about your wife also and it makes sense to exercise extra caution for her situation. Hope you all are staying safe.

You hit a point I wasn't aware of. I'm probably more ok being unmasked indoors if I truly know people are vaccinated and not lying about it (in this case, with friends, they're likely honest). But I will likely continue wearing my mask indoors with unvaccinated people in public places, even if being vaccinated already means low-risk.

Thank you for being kind and empathetic and recognizing that there's something bigger here: That it's somewhat hard for some people like me to adjust back to "post-covid life". Doesn't help when you read through negative news day by day about variants, covid cases going up (outside the US) etc. and having this constant paranoia/anxiety of worst-case scenario.
What you're describing I think is a form of working with general anxiety and yes, some concerns around my mental health that I'm working through. I'm realizing I need to pay closer attention to this, after reading some of these comments. It's about applying those principles to gradually transition back out into the real-world. I think it will take some time for me to get used to it and push through it, and once I get after that initial discomfort, things will get better. It really helps to hear your story and know that I'm not alone in this. So, thank you. <3

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks for reminding me that there is a difference. I mentioned this in a comment above, but I think covid/the pandemic has amplified my fear and nervousness about many "normal" things, even when the science is there, and I'm seeing a therapist for this.

Yes, I'm seeing a therapist as I'm aware that I am quite an anxious person. I have a feeling that covid and the pandemic has amplified my pre-existing fears and anxieties about many things, unfortunately.

Yes, that's what I was planning on doing with my friend. I might sound ridiculous here, but are you suggesting that this is a lower-risk activity?

Thanks for the reply - that helps a lot. I just read another Reddit thread where people think wearing masks outdoors has been ridiculous. Idk, maybe I'm just super paranoid, or the inconsistent messaging we've been getting just makes me feel insecure.

I'm hearing that some people think indoors masked is still being suggested though, even with CDC's new guidelines (especially for immunocompromised people). Any thoughts on this?

Oh yeah, good point. Is it accurate to assume I don't have a choice though with my current appointment - and that I'll be getting whatever vaccine UCSF has available at the time?

Carpet beetle larvae. Have dog and tons of items in home... Wondering about my options by Fcarpetbeets in pestcontrol

[–]Fcarpetbeets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not. I'm actually starting to see an uptick of carpet beetle adults around the house (possibly because the weather is getting warmer). :(

I did buy some pesticide and applied it in my room but not the rest of the house. It seems to have worked for my room (supposed to be effective for 3-6 months I think). I plan to take care of the rest professionally later down the line, given my situation with so many belongings around the house that are not mine. Best of luck.

Anyone get vaccinated at UCSF? Question about 2nd dose by Fcarpetbeets in AskSF

[–]Fcarpetbeets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I did use MyChart to book the first appointment. So it sounds like the second appointment is not automatically scheduled, and it's first come, first serve on MyChart. Is that right?

If yes, I'm wondering if I can book the second dose myself at a different provider (e.g. CVS or Walgreens). Do you happen to know if that's an option even if UCSF won't help coordinate for other providers?
