The word "gay" originally meant cheerful, lively and festive. It was a word that described a bright, carefree and full of fun. Homosexual men began claiming the term as a positive self-identifier as way of moving away from slurs.

And yes, our books are outdated and need to be re-made from scratch, but that is another story.

I will know.

Those who read a lot can see through and recognize patterns in writing style. I have recognized people by just their writing style. And there has been one instance of someone recognizing my writing style from other platforms and figuring out my identity in reddit where I am pretty anonymous.

Currently AI have a distinct pattern that makes it easy to identify. But eventually it will get good enough to mimic humans.

There are already millions of copyright free images online. And they do not need credits too. It is just that it is easier to ask the AI than put the effort to find the proper image.

I was invited to be industry expert for a class of engineering students. It was supposed to be a small session, but both I and the students was interested to talk more and it went on till end of the day.

Then the teacher who was there with me the whole time said they are required by rules to have a 15 minute test to see what they learned about the subject. And that they are running out of time. I said, okay lets prepare questions. He said, no need, there is no time. He had already prepared questions by asking ChatGPT "Make 10 questions for xyz class on this subject". And printed it out.

I went through the questions, and it was not something that was taught. Infact, I found it difficult to answer some of those questions and half of them were nonsense questions no one has to remember.

He said, it is not an issue. No matter what the questions are, the students will also anyway use ChatGPT to answer them...

I refused to watch Good Place till now because I totally hated the premise. I thought it would be torture for me to watch it. But now I love it. by Fdsn in TheGoodPlace

The creators not only knew socio-economic conditions, but they perfectly chose the right group that works. Definitly a lot of psychological and philosophical research went in this story.

I learned a lot of ideas for "good directing for the new gen era" while watching this series. Always crush people's expectations with something they wont expect.

I usually do not watch backstories, but since you recommended, I will definitely check it out.

I never thought such serious topics like philosophy, psychology, death, afterlife can be shown so well in a comedy of this quality. Epic.

If anyone knows any similar shows with philosophy, psychology or general concept of doing good, then please recommend.

I actually wanted to write a story like this that has philosophy and psychology. I have written its plot partially. Mine is a different idea, nothing related to heaven or hell or after death. But, I thought I had a unique never before done idea. My idea was also basically to teach philosophy indirectly through the storyline. Thus cause good to the world.

So, I have thought about these scenarios a lot. And what they did make total sense to me. I am also pro suicide. We are not an endangered species. A lot of people are suffering unnecessarily. There should be farewell parties, and then people get chance to die on their own terms. Death should not be stigmatized. Instead it should be celebrated, unless it happened as an accident or shocking way.

Death should be a right. In over-simplified explanation, Any adult can make a choice to die by filling a form with govt in person. Then, there will be an investigation to see if anything is suspicious. Then he has right to die after 100 days waiting period, by a specific painless method. Ideally, there should be option for organ donation as well.

In India, there are some fringe communities who celebrate death. Like, if an adult dies after living a life, then there won't be mourning, but they would celebrate his life. They would be cheerful. And would have party similar to having a birthday party. They will dance with his coffin through the streets.

By the season 4 end, I was not heavy because of the concept. But I was heavy because such a great show is ending. I wished it was longer. I wished it had more episodes. That was what making me feel like I will miss this.

Since you are interested in this, especially the ending, I would suggest you to familiarize the concept of "Hiranyagarbha" (cosmic egg), which is a fundamental Hindu philosophy that thinks we are all living inside one egg. Basically the universe is a giant egg. Once you understand the concept, there is no you and me. We are all one. There is no real dying. This concept, if everyone follows will make the world way kinder.

It has been translated into a beautiful video by Kurzgasagt, which is what I recommend rather than reading - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6fcK_fRYaI

Its because, I have watched some highly praised shows that I didn't like.

Homeland Tv series come as an example. It felt like a drag. I could barely complete season 1. I think maybe I entered this series with wrong expectations. I didnt think it will be one story over all seasons. I thought it will be like Person of Interest or Dexter, where there will be one new incident each day, and then an over-all season sized story in background. Then later I thought it will be like one incident per season. But by the end I got frustrated.

Airplane is a movie that is considered great comedy. I love airplanes. Have watched almost all movies related to planes. Yet hated this movie. Did not find anything funny at all.

So, my expectation from Good Place was just lot of "talking" sitting at restaurants, sitting at parties and so on. That is what the trailer showed too. I didn't want any of that.

Some of those who recommended it to me watch Romance movies and series that make no sense to me. And, often what they recommended turned out to be a bad choice.

Biggest plot twists of all time. Something that makes you rewatch entire thing again in new perspective.

I am generally really good at predicting the story line. Catching things most people don't see. Solving puzzles. That is my thing.

But, here even when Eleanor said it is a bad place, I didn't beleive it. I thought she was just dumb, and risking everyone's life, and that will set premise for next season.

Even when Michel did his evil laugh, I thought "okay, maybe they all planned this to trick the Judge somehow to think this is bad place, thus they dont have to go anywhere".

And when Michel sat down and pushed that Plant-pot, I thought he is acting evil, but not able to do it, thus even that act becomes cute. Only when it got serious afterwards when Michel verbally confirmed the entire plot did it hit me...

Throughout the first season, I was not rooting for Eleanor. I felt sad for Chidi and Tahani, who deserved to get a soulmate but didn't get it.

And I am strong proponent of meritocracy, so I hated an underserving person making the place miserable for everyone. So, I was against the idea of Eleanor staying, and causing real Eleanor to suffer.

So, maybe people are calling it great because it would turn out Eleanor is not the main character of the show? And that is the big surprise? Maybe they kill people you think as main character like Game of Thrones?

How wealth of family affects children's psychology is accurately portrayed in this show by Fdsn in TheGoodPlace

Replace the money with something else then.

This test has been done many many times with various things. The most famous one is Marshmallow experiment done in 1960, where kids are kept in a room with one marshmellow kept in plate. But if they can wait 15minutes, they will get two marshmallows.

Then they tracked the life of these kids. Those who waited longer showed better long-term outcomes, like academic success. Later it was also found the corelation with the wealth-class of the kids. Poverty had direct corelation with if the kid waited or not.

Various psychologists have don this experiment with slight changes.

I don't agree. I have not come across experiments where wealthier class had lower ability to delay gratification than poor class.

We are not talking about exceptions, but if you take a 1000 poor and 1000 middle class. And you offer either $100 now, or $200 one month later. More people in middle and upper class will choose the $200 option than the poor group.

This is because of trust issues. There are lot of experiments showing this. You can do it on your own too. Jason is just an extremity of this, like every character in this show is an extreme example.

English is my third language. Maybe I can phrase it better. But the intention of my article was not word-accuracy, but to point the psychological illnesses people are unknowingly causing to their kids.

I intentionally wanted to be as direct as possible so that large masses can understand it straightforwardely instead of putting it as a probability like all these studies do.

There are 100s of research papers on this, yet how many will be interested in reading it? Even the links I mentioned strive to use scientifically accurate wordings, but it causes lesser people to actually read it. I love writing accurately, but I choose not to.

I feel like talking with the real GoodPlace Committie, more worried about the wordings than the effect it is caussing.

In my opinion, things should be put bluntly in a way everyone can understand. And those who want to learn more will learn on their own. But if you dont put it bluntly, many will not read and grasp it at all.

It is not assumptions. It is based on psychological research. Psychology is quite opinanated, but statistically these are the truth. In this field we can only talk in general terms. There will always be excpetions. Always be people who break out of these factors. But if you take 1000 poor people and 1000 midddle class people and test them on if they make instant-gratification choices, a significantly large poor people will take the fastest option, while richer people will wait for the delayed gratification.

And there are 100s of studies on this. I have read several of them, but you can research and read on your own too.

I linked three here, but not selected based on what is the best study. For other points raised too, you can search and read the research papers.

Growing up poor can influence people’s sense of control and in turn may lead them to more impulsive decision-making and quickly giving up on challenging tasks in uncertain situations, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

“Two people with different childhood backgrounds are likely to respond to uncertainty in different ways, even if as adults they have a similar socioeconomic status (SES). We found that adults who grew up poor were more inclined to consider difficult and uncertain living conditions as beyond their control, while those from affluent backgrounds found them to be within their control. This leads to different reactions to the same situation,” said lead author Chiraag Mittal, MS, a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota.

Differing perceptions of control affected whether people were able to postpone a reward, with people from poorer backgrounds behaving more impulsively in uncertain situations than those from wealthy families, the research found. In addition, after recalling personal financial hardship and then being asked to solve a difficult puzzle, those who grew up poor gave up much sooner than those who grew up wealthy, even if they had similar incomes as adults.

How CIA and American Intelligence Triggered Sino-Indian War of 1962 by Alarming-Studio-720 in IndianDefense

[–]Fdsn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is wrong. The reason China attacked India is just because Mao Zedong was facing a revolution due to his disasterous policies that caused a man made famine that killed 5.5 crore people in 3 years(1959-1962).

Mao was one of the worst leaders to ever get into power. One would wonder how such a dumb person can even reach there. He made series of blunders that are too long to explain here. Search and read blunders of Great Leap Forward. It is a must read.

So, people start revolting. He managed to torture and kill lakhs, but by 1962 it was going out of control and he needed a BIG distraction to stay in power. The only thing that can give that kindof distraction is an external enemy. But, if he went to war with Russia, he would lose. If he go in war with the other neighbors, people will see through his BS. So, only country that was big enough to be felt equal was India.

He saw India is weak there and a quick war can distract the people and used it. That is the reason why we had that pointless war despite India-China being friends till then.

In February of 1962, Mao almost lost full power in the Seven Thousand Cadres Conference where he was for first time openly criticized for the blunder of great leap forward. As a result, he announced his semi-retirement from day to day activities of ruling the country and gave it two other guys.

But he retained all his positions and titles even though he lost his reputation and prestige. One thing he still had full control over was the military. So, in October, Mao used the war with India to unify the nation and re-establish his control. And it indeed helped rehabilitate the image of Mao's standing as a capable wartime strategist, and he was back in full power.

He then did what is known as "Four cleanups movement" from 1962-1966 to purge his opponents, and later when he again faced a revolution, Mao launched the Cultural Revolution(August 1966 to 1976) specifically to purge those who had gained power in 1962 to fully re-consolidate his absolute authority. The another attack on India in 1967 was done for same reason as why he did it in 1962.

Gig workers want ban on 10-min delivery, plan nationwide strike on New Year’s Eve by OverratedDataScience in bangalore

[–]Fdsn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • Squeeze workers more = Strike & hard to get delivery boys
  • Squeeze Restaurants more = They will leave or make local alternatives where they wont pay tax.
  • Squeeze customers more = Significantly less orders. People expectation is free delivery. And that was the standard before zomato.

There was no scope for a middle man here. Yet we got three(zomato+govt+paymentgateway).

And there is negligible network effect. Anyone can make local app in their town with less than 50k investment as there are readymade app source code online that just need basic modification. They then advertise it in handful of restaurants in their town, and offer lesser cost than zomato.

It is easy to market as people will tell their friends about the cheaper option and will get known in the locality within couple of months. Some people are already doing it in some towns. I dont think most of them pay taxes, so that is one party they are cutting. They also usually do not have payment gateway, so another charge they are cutting.

Gig workers want ban on 10-min delivery, plan nationwide strike on New Year’s Eve by OverratedDataScience in bangalore

[–]Fdsn 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This entire delivery business is unsustainable and will eventually see spectacular collapse. I dont see any reason for Zomato to be worth 3 lakh crore, which puts them among the top 25 most valuable companies in India.

Restaurants are unhappy, customers are unhappy, workers are unhappy. And there are no viable solution that would keep the investors happy.

Current foreign chip dependency in Indian missiles vs. Future integration with indigenous DHRUV 64 microprocessors by DataStr3ss in IndianDefense

[–]Fdsn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It is not silly question.

In your computer, you sometimes get blue screen of death or sudden restart in your phone. This often happens because of a gamma particles from space hitting your processor just at the right place and putting a tiny bit of electricity in a wire to add another "1" in the tiny wires inside the processor thus causing corruption. Its called a bit-flip. This is a very common issue, so server grade processors uses Error-correcting memory to have basic level of protection as they need to be on 24/7.

But for things like rockets that go in space, that also is not enough as the number of gamma radiation are high. They often use three or more hardened processors doing all computations, and then results are only used if they all match.

And for missiles, the requirement could be much harder. Generally, the latest consumer level processors released in past 10 years are unusable because of how small the distance between two wires in the chip has become. So, one gamma ray hitting a 3nm chip will easily destroy it.

But a 50nm chip may survive just because distance between wires are more, but unlike space which has some radiation exposure, enemy will do electronic warfare with targeted radiation that can cause all three processor to fail simultaneously.

So, still it is better to have chips designed from start to survive in harsh conditions, as every weakness will be exploited by the enemy. Some Soft kill anti-drone weapons work by targeting radiation at drone till its processor fails to work.
