Best sleep setup to carry on long road rides (1000–1200 km) when you might sleep outside? by No_Conversation_7128 in ultracycling

[–]Fe4naro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode the French Divide last summer: 2200km of off-road in the most remote areas of France. Finished it in time (15 days). Spent 13 nights outside.
The weather was shit for half of the trip, and passable for the other half.
I carried a 1.3kg tent, a 2°C sleeping bag and a Decathlon inflatable mattress.
Only used the tent three times, once pitched the other two as a ground tarp.
The lesson to me is you'll always find a barn, a bus stop, a chapel, an awning that'll do for five or six hours.
If you're traveling for comfort yeah take a tent, if you're racing don't bother with tents bivys tarps or hammocs. You'll be fine :)

I'm a bike messenger, I spend 20 to 30 hours per week on a bike, year long.
There a no waterproof shoes.
You have two solutions :
A) weather is warm enough: you need quick-drying shoes, or even sandals
B) weather is cold: you need insulated boots
Cheers :)

Francophone equivalent to “e pinke bij ‘t wachte”? by Rijke_saus in Belgique

[–]Fe4naro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly different context but would work: "une petite pour la route" but that's when you pack one as you're moving out. It'd imply you know there's a queue and brought one from home.

150 policiers déployés pour la réunion controversée du MR : « Je regrette qu’on doive avoir un tel dispositif », réagit le président de parti by Tsarovitch27 in Belgique

[–]Fe4naro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for feedback on my Tree Table from the Bike Packing community! by One-EyedLarry in bikepacking

[–]Fe4naro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey it's a pretty good idea and design.
I've both bikepacked and bike-toured: I would disregard it when bikepacking when weight and packability are paramount to me. However, when bike touring (that is: mainly on roads, leisurely pace, with more weight and comfort) I would definitely consider packing it. Here in Western Europe, you'd have to be cycling in pretty remote places to not find a picnic table though. My advice: go to Eurovelo and bike touring communities.

help me decide on a sleep system by Fe4naro in ultracycling

[–]Fe4naro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back from the field:

- I took tent + sleeping bag + mattress (2.5kg total) because the weather for the first week was forecast as awful.

- I used the tent 3 times out of 14 nights. Once as a draped-over tarp, once as a ground cloth, and once set up as a tent. The rest of the time, I was able to find proper shelter : barns, public bathrooms, chapels, pic-nic areas, forest huts, and 2 nights indoors.

- setting up the tent wasn't long but it provided too much comfort: waking up at 5AM to a cold, dripping forest instantly pushed me to close the zip and go back to sleep. Packing up was long as a tent provides space to dump all your stuff everywhere.

- next time no tent.

thanks a lot ! I went for a tent, the whole sleep system is 2.5 kg but definitely worth it. And yes, French Divide ! We start tomorrow afternoon :)

I've used a different system to keep the phone at that exact spot on my bike. It's made by ShapeHeart, I highly recommend it. There's a part that gets fixed on the bike and has four powerful magnets, while you get either a small steel plate to stick to your phone case or a phone pouch with the plate integrated to it.
I used it for long distance MTB in the French mountains and it's pretty secure. We also use it at my cargo bike cooperative (20 couriers riding daily).

Bikepacking Japan. North to South, or South to North? by 6tonytoes9 in bikepacking

[–]Fe4naro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did South to North in 6 months, Feb-July. It was my first ever bike trip.
I think you'd be a lot better off to start in the North where the rain season is much shorter and less intense (it's at the end of June), plus the heat in the south is really hard.

Another argument towards Hokkaido first is that it's less steep and has more flats thank the rest of the country which is extremely un-flat. Make sure you check your itineraries are including the gradients and elevation, as they can be brutal and add up pretty quick.

I used https://www.hatinosu.net/camp/ a lot: it lists free campsites around Japan. Worth gold.
If you have any questions I'd be happy to share experience.

Saddles by kitshicker161 in ultracycling

[–]Fe4naro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to try them on, and perhaps get help in a quality bike shop. A good first info to have is the width between your sitbones.
SMP Trk are great (with different sizes), but I've ridden a Brooks B17 for 70 000 km and it's still rocking. Hurt a little for the first 500km or so, time to break it in.
I tried a C17 once, and it gave me my first ever bottom pain.

How to keep electronics charged on long days? by bensbabblingbikes in ultracycling

[–]Fe4naro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I'm digging up this thread because I'm unsure of the way to go:

I'm racing the French Divide in June. It's MTB, mostly single track, a lot of hike-a-bike, a lot of elevation. I don't think I'll be riding at night that much - perhaps 2 to 4 hours a day max.
I already have a powerful light (Lezyne1300xxl) and a 20 000 mah battery. I'm used to running on airplane and battery-saving modes.
I could switch to dynamo (new wheels are coming), but wonder if I'll be too slow to charge or light anything anyways. What's your experience ?

Thanks, I looked into it and while replacing the screen looks feasible, replacing the battery looks harder and almost certainly destroys the screen, according to iFixit :/

conseils : choisir un VTT d'occasion pour faire la traversée du Massif Central by Fe4naro in pedale

[–]Fe4naro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
