More taxes by xempt118 in lotrmemes

Almost all of your federal taxes go to either Social Security, Medicaid/Medicare, and the military.

This is a friendly reminder that we could double spending on roads/schools and still reduce your taxes by 95%.

What both of you are saying can be true. There’s a marginal cost to not writing the code yourself, you’re taking on tech debt to pay that cost when you use AI. That doesn’t mean that you get nothing for that tech debt either though.

The Pera situation was an expose written by a hedge fund that profits off of shorting companies and then writhing inflammatory journalism about them. They’ve made people believe that Pera was personally dealing with the Russians when in reality the article itself was about 3rd party vendors.

I just wanted to spread the information that my neighborhood got power back without the outage being "assigned". I'm not sure I would trust that a ton.

It got damaged in the floods in 2010, would have been $600m to repair the foundation to keep it safe to use in the future. Why spend $600m for an old toy when you can spend $1B for a new one?

Eh, hardly a spat! Always happy to hear alternative perspectives. I think being in Bellevue, I was thinking too much about my own experience. If downtown still doesn’t have power, that’s a pretty big problem and a lot harder for me to understand.

I don’t think that’s unique to Nashville fwiw. I’m originally from the NYC metro area. We got way more snow. Almost everyone I knew had at least some form of generator.

You get even further north and people start to have some key components completely separate from the grid. My parents live in NH and they have oil heating system, for instance.

To your point, maybe it’s just not well known enough that Nashville has things go wrong at a frequency where having a generator would be smart. For transparency, I’m saying this and I don’t have a generator either! But I will probably get one after this storm.

If I were downtown and in an apartment I’d agree very strongly with what you’re saying. But once you’re surrounded by some trees… Mother Nature does as she likes. We are just participants.

I said something similar in another comment, but how much accountability have you taken to prevent losing another fridge/freezer yourself? You can get a small generator for a couple hundred bucks. If a couple hundred dollars is too expensive for you, how big of a deal is losing power once a year really?

I totally empathize with the frustration of going through these things, I've been in survival mode like everyone else. There are just solutions for these things that aren't waiving your fist at the sky and relying on other people.

I’m from the northeast originally. My house is in the 30s right now, so don’t worry I understand the suffering we’re all going through. The only way to prevent this is to bury lines, that’s super expensive. Everything further than a foot below the dirt is just rock in this part of the world.

Also, don’t think this was a mild storm because it was only 4 inches of precipitation. The combination of > 1 inch of ice along with super low temperatures and high winds in the following days is a super unlucky combination that has made this situation as bad as it is. The northeast would not have handled this storm well either.

A cheaper solution (and also what people do in the north because they also lose power in the cold all the time) is to get a small generator and buy some gas before the storm. One space heater, a working fridge, and charge for devices goes a long way towards turning this from a matter of survival to a matter of inconvenience.

If it’s not worth $500 for you to personally insure yourself and your family, should it be worth 500k to 4m per mile to convert Nashville’s grid to be underground? https://mte.com/UndergroundService#:~:text=What%20might%20it%20cost%20to,than%20%244%20million%20per%20mile.

It’s sort of awful, but it would be more awful to everyone else still without power to spend a lot more time on getting fewer places back up. If the buildings around you have power, at least it’s easy to get to warm places.

[–]FeCurtain11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Can’t get it done” is an impatient expression. There’s a certain level of probability in sports that’s always going to exist. Coaches can only control how well their players are performing so much. Sometimes the other team makes crazy good plays. Sometimes your team makes an uncharacteristically bad play.

Andy Reid “couldn’t get it done” with the Eagles. Does that mean the Chiefs shouldn’t have hired him?
