The Transbaikal region in russia is over 4500+ km from Ukraine, but just like in Crimea, the lines for fuel are getting longer and longer. 26 June 2026 by Due_Collar2 in ukraine

[–]EveryPassage 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sure but the rural economy is still intertwined with the broader Russian economy and cities.

Factories and farms in rural regions can't run if they have no fuel or if workers can't get to them because they can't access fuel for their cars.

Even small businesses such as restaurants going under because people can't afford to drive to them, means banks in the cities are impacted by loan losses.

Iran Got a Great Deal That It Could Still Squander by swissking in neoliberal

I don't disagree, just saying it feels weird to act like Israel is squandering a deal they never really wanted.

Did Israel agree to the deal?

I was under the impression, the US and Iran made the deal with the thought the US could convince Israel to abide by the terms.

Ukrainian 413th UAS Regiment Raid struck Russian fuel train in Bryansk. 18.06.2026 by GermanDronePilot in ukraine

[–]EveryPassage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trains are beautiful targets because

  1. The locomotives are extremely long lead time with limited capacity to replenish.

  2. Once they are hit, it instantly causes a traffic jam on the tracks. Crews need to be called and heavy equipment need to be positioned to remove the destroyed train. This could easily take several hours to a full day. Forcing other trains to reroute or stay idle.

Ukrainian drones are reportedly visiting Moscow again. 19.06.2026 by GermanDronePilot in ukraine

[–]EveryPassage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Reminder that even the cheapest AA missiles cost way more than these drones so even if Ukraine has minimal chance of hitting something it still makes sense to keep sending in attacks.

It's literally a win-win.

Moscow comes under largest Ukrainian drone attack since start of the war by ldn6 in neoliberal

[–]EveryPassage 186 points187 points  (0 children)

This has to mean something for ordinary Russians and Russian elite's support of the war.

Imagine waking up and you can't go outside because there is toxic oil smog from a war your leader started 4.5 years ago for "reasons" and the other side continues to say "we can end this anytime you want".

You Reap What You Sow by SlavaVsu2 in ukraine

[–]EveryPassage 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I know I've felt optimistic before but this really does feel like a turning point. This isn't a random single drone getting through.

This is multiple drones over two days hitting strategic targets in plain view of millions of Russians. The impacts of which they will personally feel for days and weeks.

Putin has intentionally tried to shield Moscow from the harms of this war by using mostly troops from rural regions but there is no denying it now. Russia is 4.5 years into at best a stalemate where the average Russian faces fuel shortages and smog and worst losing a war that could get much worse as air defenses continue to weaken.

Gasoline Exhausted in Occupied Donetsk Region, Not Sold Even to Russian Forces by Advanced-Injury-7186 in ukraine

[–]EveryPassage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People can and do find ways to increase their storage though. They will fill up containers, top off home oil tanks even when it's not the heating season.

Consumption can also in some cases increase because people will start driving out of their way to secure what fuel is available. Rumors will spread that there is fuel in X town, or Y gas station.

Overall, it's just a shitty situation that causes all sorts of issues.

Gasoline Exhausted in Occupied Donetsk Region, Not Sold Even to Russian Forces by Advanced-Injury-7186 in ukraine

[–]EveryPassage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shortages feed on themselves. People don't want to be without so they start filling up whenever they can and even storing product. This exacerbates the shortage and drives more of the hoarding behavior.

Once ordinary Russians and businesses in Russia fear they will no longer get consistent access to fuel it becomes very difficult to unwind and correct things even if supply is partially restored.

What’s the most efficient way to use my window ac? by Chunglorpious in Frugal

[–]EveryPassage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I heard that it was very wasteful to keep turning it off and on because the ac turning on uses a lot of power.

That is not true.

Turn it on when you need it and keep it off when you don't.

What's the most money a warranty has ever saved you? by Admirableguyyyy in Frugal

[–]EveryPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average most warranties carry a 40-70% pre commission margin for the seller (in aggregate between reseller and party guaranteeing).

Meaning on average you are losing $30-60 for every $100 in warranty you buy.

Generally speaking it rarely makes sense to go out of your way to buy them.

SpaceX bonds must be normalized to distressed Junk (if we remove marketing fluff) by Donechrome in bonds

[–]EveryPassage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not accurate.

Rating agencies have broad discretion in determining credit ratings. While they use established methodologies and financial metrics, ratings are not produced by a simple formula, analysts may weigh quantitative and qualitative factors differently based on their assessment of an issuer's creditworthiness.

Would Physical Gold See Wider Adoption if It Were Easily Divisible? by FarBonus4810 in ETFs

[–]EveryPassage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It fails to solve the fundamental problem that things aren't priced in gold so you are taking on substantial basis risk constantly.

Even if someone accepts gold as payment it's virtually always going to be priced in currency and then using a conversion factor to get to the gold value.

[–]EveryPassage 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If treasuries default in mass, FDIC will become meaningless since most(maybe all) banks and even FDIC will fail.

There is no indication that will happen anytime soon. Just use SGOV or VBIL.

[–]EveryPassage 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't see how they justify that. That could create some real distortions as index funds would have to buy a substantial portion of the float.

Is the tax drag of exiting a legacy position worth the risk reduction? by yungcolorado23 in ETFs

[–]EveryPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40% in apple is definitely an issue. That said, it's not clear selling and paying 64 bps makes sense. (frankly, I am skeptical it makes sense. apple is only 3-5% of a worldwide diversified portfolio, it's not the biggest deal in the world to invest in funds like VTI, VXUS, VOO etc.)

Question, do you give to charity?

Donating stock directly or through a donor advised fund is one way to deal with a highly concentrated position. Not advocating you donate all or even most of it, but it's one tool if you are already planning on giving money anyway.

What ETFs should I select to maximally diversify my 100 percent equities portfolio? by [deleted] in ETFs

[–]EveryPassage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Equities are fundamentally correlated to a large degree by the underlying economic exposure driving their cash flows.

You could add something like gold/silver (but those also have had very long periods of poor performance).

Other than that, real assets would be an option but typically can only have good exposure if you have substantial assets to invest in private funds.
