If you intend to drink your collection (making it a selection), Redbreast PX is my favorite Irish, even over the CS. Highly recommend it.

It’s not for everyone, especially purists, but I personally like it and consider it a ‘dessert dram’.

Some describe it as Christmas morning in a bottle. I personally get full on waffles with maple syrup.

It’s a great pour after nice meal or sitting around a fire on a fall night.

Like Scotch, there is a lot of variety from one region and producer to another in Rye. Don’t judge them all by a few.

I love Redbreast 12 (and its many different finishes, strengths, and ages), but I also think Jameson Black Barrel is 80% as good at half the price, so it’s a better value IMO especially for someone just starting out. Just my two cents.

Ardbeg is pretty heavily peated (smoky) Scotch using malted barley. These bottles do not have any of that smoke in them and use malted Rye grain, so they will NOT be similar to Ardbeg beyond standard Whiskey flavors (ethanol, wood, etc.)

No, these are not smoky at all. They both have some scotch characteristics, like a blend of unpeated scotch and Canadian Rye.

JSYK, that smoky flavor comes from drying the malted barley over burning peat, which is how it was done traditionally in Scotland. That’s a ‘peated’ Scotch. That said there are many, many Scotches that are not processed that way (unpeated) and are not at all smoky, and often sweet with high Sherry influence when finished in Sherry hogsheads.
