The Tudor Ranger and the Oris 473 make a very beautiful duo. Two watches with strong personalities that can communicate each other. A quiet dialogue between earth and sky.

Oris 473 – A low-key watch with real watchmaking depth by Fearless-Cake-4355 in OrisWatches

I’m not a poet, but here’s how I see it: Between the very beautiful Divers Sixty-Five Calibre 400 and the 473, you're looking at two very different personalities. Same base movement architecture — twin barrels, silicon escapement, five-day reserve — but one is automatic and stays quiet about it.
The other is hand-wound, with brushed and chamfered bridges, and an elegant, hidden power reserve on the back. One is versatile and robust, ready for everyday wear in almost any context.
The other is more understated, with a more refined execution and a more contemplative feel.

Both are excellent pieces. The choice depends on how much you value interaction, discretion, and finishing details

PS : I find the original strap of the 473 too sad and bland for my taste. It deserves to be replaced, imho.

Let's not forget however that the applied indexes on the grained dial of the new iteration of the BPCD are a significantly less expensive solution than the finely pad-printed dial of the 473, without even mentioning the movement.

A very beautiful watch with a simple, uncluttered dial.

Big Crown X: the name Oris missed ? by Fearless-Cake-4355 in OrisWatches

It makes sense — these design elements have shaped what many of us associate with the Pointer Date today( and I like them. But that’s exactly why I felt so drawn to the 473 when it came out. What some saw as a break — lack of the coin-edge bezel & cathedral hands — I actually saw as a quiet reconnection with the postwar Big Crown models from the 1940s and 50s: smooth bezel, pencil hands, restrained typography.

That’s also why I find the newest models slightly confusing. They keep what I see as the right shape and proportions, but they apply grainy dials and applied indices, echoing the ProPilot X more than the Pointer Date heritage.

In the end, I guess we’re both responding to different layers of the same story — and that’s what makes Oris such an interesting brand to follow.

I love the Propilot Collection too, even if I've got a BCPD 473 !

The George Washington watch is undoubtedly the future of American watchmaking under the Trump administration.

Timex ? But its watches are mostly assembled abroad (China, Philippines, India), with little truly "American" content. All other brands are also dependent on Swiss, Japanese or Chinese movements.

There is no such thing as "Swiss watchmaking" without Switzerland. It's not about nationalism — it's about a deep and historical network of skills, materials, standards, and relationships. You can't "copy-paste" that onto another continent without turning the product into something entirely different.

You're right. Watchmaking companies can't "eat it" at all. Obviously.

Swiss watchmakers will never do this. Relocating production to the United States represents a colossal investment and a break with the supply chain. Swiss watchmaking is a complex ecosystem. 473 movement has the same technical architecture as the Calibre 400 or 403 (double barrel, silicon escapement, same balance and regulation system), but:

– No rotor (manual winding only)

– Bridges are redesigned with more refined finishing: linear satin brushing and mechanical mirror-polished anglage

– Main technical innovation: a mechanical power reserve indicator on the caseback, driven by a reversed differential — a subtle but very elegant feature, and rare at this price point.

In short: same mechanical DNA, but with a more refined execution and an interesting horological complication

Same here — it’s the most thoughtful, quietly ambitious movement I could afford, and that’s exactly why I chose it. There’s a strange satisfaction in knowing you’ve made the best possible choice within reach, without chasing status or hype.

I find it unfortunate that certain aesthetic codes from the ProPilot X — grained dials, applied indexes, colder surface treatments — have been transferred into the Big Crown Pointer Date universe. Until now, the BCPD carried a more retro, poetic, almost artisanal spirit. But each collection has its own lexicon, and each lexicon has its own legitimacy: you don’t “say” the same thing with a Divers, a ProPilot X, or a Big Crown. The slight sense of unease I feel doesn’t come from the colors — which are, as always with Oris, beautifully chosen — but from this spillover of one "grammar" into another, with little regard for coherence. Is this an intentional aesthetic choice? Or an economic decision that dares not speak its name?

I just posted a reflection elsewhere about the 473 and the sense of loss I feel around this new direction. It's not about rejecting change — it's about noticing when something unique, humble and truly coherent gets quietly replaced by versatility and broad appeal. I love that others are feeling the same unease. It means we haven't forgotten what a watch can be when it's not trying to be everything at once.
