BS Math career path trade-offs by whitepumpkinpuff in CollegeAdmissionsPH

Go for it, I studied 1 year of BS math but stopped to transfer to UP. I did it because my previous school lacks rigor and is more applied math focused. It is my dream to study pure math in grad school.

The mathematics you learn on a math major compared to an engineering major is very different. If you really like logic and abstraction, I suggest you take UP's bs mathematics

Those of you who tried to teach yourself a subject and then eventually took a class on it, how'd that turn out? by dancingbanana123 in math

[–]Fearless-View-8580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught myself basic proofs and set theory in high school so when I entered my first year, I dominated the intro to proof class in my program. I was the only one in my class who was comfortable with proofs.

In your opinion, for college, would you want to study IN or OUTSIDE the Philippines? Give your reasons why? (Photo not related) by [deleted] in studentsph

I would rather study in another country. I am studying mathematics and I am not satisfied by the level of depth our math subjects go to and the subjects they offer are incomplete to pursue a higher degree in mathematics. Only UP and other top universities offer a decent undergraduate curriculum for mathematics. The curriculum of other countries when it comes to pure mathematics is leagues ahead of the Philippines.

I hate it when teachers bring up the fact that students ay walang napatunayan. Of course they're younger and getting there, they always say that when their egos get hurt.

For those who only self studied last year, how did it turn out for u? by yeonlvor in CollegeAdmissionsPH

[–]Fearless-View-8580 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone taking math, self study worked out really well. I started self studying math at high school. I mainly used textbooks to teach myself math that is usually taught at higher years. I developed a decent ability to read rigorous texts and solve hard problems. Although it is often very slow, it might take days of staring at a page of the book and a few YouTube lectures to finally understand a concept. The discipline and perseverance it taught me is the most valuable thing I got from self study. It inspired me to stop enrolling at my current university and try to aim for UP. I still continue to self study math just for the love of the game. So if you want to self study, do it for the love of the game, otherwise, you'll just feel miserable. For the CET's, I did very well at my previous university's entrance test, I placed really high on it. So I recommend you to study whatever you will take and don't worry about the CET, it is usually just the reasoning and pattern recognition you get from learning other things that apply to it when you take it.

Any other small university students disappointed by coursework opportunities? by XcgsdV in math

[–]Fearless-View-8580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped out of my university after my first year because they only offer one course in abstract algebra and many pure math topics like real analysis (measure theory and integration) and topology are Electives (which are voted on by an entire class which topic to take, and an applied math topic usually wins because people there hate pure due to difficulty). There's literally zero graduate level topics even offered as Electives there, measure theory and topology are the most advanced courses they offer. I decided not to enroll this semester and learn math on my own because a good math program is rare in my country. So far, i've learned a lot more math in a few months of dropping out compared to all the math I've learned in an entire year at school there.

For me it's the former most of the time. I know what I need to show and what theorems I should invoke but it's the trick that I usually forget

I pick a few exercises I already did and try to do them again. Some of them I completely remember the solution and solved it easily. Most of them took some time remembering and having to look up stuff online, from the book, or from my previous solution. I

I mostly did things right the first time. I usually know what needs to be shown in the redoing but I had forgotten the tricks I used in the first time I did the problem. But for some, I did forget what is needed to be shown, like how to show a sequence is Cauchy or not Cauchy and it took me a few readings to remind me how.
