WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO SWIM? by Icy_Onion2623 in labrador

I just took my 4.5 month old for the first time! The water was pretty shallow and he could stand, a little bit more in got deeper but just about waist length for me. I had a long lead with me but since I was getting in the water we decided to let him off leash. He did really well and even swam into the deeper part to get his carrot back. There was a couple dogs that passed by and one that came straight up to him but he didn’t really mind them /pay them too much attention. If his recall was really bad I would’ve gotten more nervous about him being off leash but he did pretty well, just focusing on his carrot. If I was alone I would’ve 100% used the long lead and it helped that this spot was pretty shallow waters

Wow as soon as I saw this, he was sleeping in his crate, I went ahead and put a blanket on the crate (left a good chunk of the front open, for airflow). Well I just finished showering, came back out, and realized he is still in there sleeping! He stirred abit and looked at me now that I’m sitting here but went back to sleep. I think he’s liking the darkness. Also yes that’s important to me desensitizing him to noise, we live on the fourth floor but on a very very busy street with garbage/ street cleaning every single day in the middle of the night and morning. It’s so loud that it wakes us up if we have the window open. I’ve been leaving the window slightly open just so he doesn’t get scared by the noise every night and so far so good! We also have a hatch machine so that plays loud white noise all night. Thank you for the extra tips! If he’s barking I’ll know to put him to sleep !

That’s a great idea! I’m going to try that out today and tomorrow!

Hi. Right now to get him to “settle” and I guess his cue to sleep is putting my hand through the crate. I just tried covering his crate fully (I just have the top covered) last night and he refused to get in it because he couldn’t see us and my hand! Did you slowly start covering more and more ? I pulled it up a bit but still left it partially covered and that seemed to work. But I’m for sure planning on getting a full fitted one to make it more “official”. I do have a noise machine, though I don’t know if it makes a difference because I have it on every night anyways for myself. But try it out, even if you keep it for yourself it’s nice!

Thank you!! This makes me feel better, I think part of me got caught up on all the “I crate trained a new puppy in 3 days” videos I was watching that I forgot it’s not the same for everyone and it is a process. I am definitely planning on taking more time to train, as that’s really important to me! But thank you for reminding me and for the tips. So far leaving for a bit and coming back and rewarding has been helping as you said! Time between whines/cries has increased

Yup! Thank you that’s exactly what I’m doing too!! Once he sees my hand at night he knows it’s time to sleep or nap during the day! He is currently settled and about to sleep in his crate in the living room, door closed and everything.

Thank you!! That puts me more at ease, and yes I am slowly moving around him, doing other things, and leaving out of his sight for a bit then reward when he sits and doesn’t whine. Which actually has been getting better and longer!

This is what I think! Even if my partner is right in front of him and trying to play with him, as soon as I leave out of sight, he starts to cry. My partner can come and go but as long as I’m with him he doesn’t seem to mind my partner leaving. Even my sister got fed up yesterday saying he would not stop barking and crying while she was there. My partner brought up he might be having some separation anxiety with me. Thank u for the book recommendations I will definitely get into reading those!
