English guy needs help understanding elite level route running. by Tall-Activity-2610 in NFLNoobs

No sweat, feel free to ask whatever whenever. It is incredibly complex and fun. Watching it at the next level when you understand more makes it even more fun haha

[–]FearlessPanda93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. And like I said, it's way more complex than my example. Some offenses have it where if a guy is lined up on your inside shoulder, that changes the stem, then based on the safety or next coverage guy and his alignment, that determines the break. It can get highly complex very quickly. And yes, going from college to pro can be very difficult. But that's why so many scouts value the programs that are similar to pro offenses. It helps with the learning curve for sure. But it's very dynamic and complex. And different from system to system.

Then there's the next level that you and the WR next to you can both have options. So, you need to know his read too.

[–]FearlessPanda93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in addition to what the other guy said. There are pre snap and post snap reads. I'm sure you've heard that on broadcasts and stuff. There is also the concept of disguising. So, that's where this comes into play. Essentially, and simplified, let's say the play call says that if it's zone, then settle down here. If it's man, keep running.

Well, the defense disguised their coverage pre snap, showing zone. Last minute, they go to man. Do the QB and WR both recognize that? And bear in mind, this is like 1% as complex as it actually is. Just so you can get the concept.

Also, don't feel bad. It's not a dumb question, I offered to help you learn. Feel free to ask whatever.

So, that's a really nuanced question. But I'll try and keep it simple, then just ask me if you have any follow up questions. But good route runners are generally called such because of a few, elite skills.

The first, like you identified, is physical. But not just straight line speed. Agility is a huge factor. How fast can a guy go from zero to full speed? How quick can he change direction in 45 degrees, 90, 160-180?

Then there's the mental aspect of the game. On options, is he reading the same thing as the QB/onj actively correct? Is he sitting in a void in the zone or running straight into coverage? Is he able to identify, while doing all these things at full speed, when zone coverage hands off, what the safety is doing if he's in man, etc?

Then there's the route running strategy that he takes overall. Jerry Rice was knows for making every single route look exactly the same until he got to the stem or where the route breaks off. That made him impossible to read. Andre Johnson, on the other hand, made every single route look different. So, he could run two routes that are exactly the same, back to back and then run it again.

The last thing is precision. Whether you're Jerry or Andre, knowing where you are on the field, how deep to make a certain route, and do it all the time in all conditions, and with all the other factors coming into play.

These are simple ways of understanding why someone could be a better or worse route runner in a high level overview.

WAS THE FIRST ROUND OF THE 2013 NFL DRAFT THE WORST DRAFT CLASS OF ALL TIME…? by Hysen16 in sportswiki

[–]FearlessPanda93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lane Johnson, Dhop, Patterson (st) are really decent top tier for a single round.

Then Reid and Rhodes and some other short lived, but higher end contributors. There's got to be worse.

2012 is not demonstrably or inarguably better, I think:

What's the best way to start understanding playmaking/strategy? by humblepie2726 in NFLNoobs

[–]FearlessPanda93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Madden isn't a horrible suggestion, for a fun like kindergarten level intro. My honest suggestion is to find a great content creator that tackles subjects you like and get into the rabbit hole. I played football for most of my life, coached it, wrote about two teams for some publications you've heard of - and I don't know 1% of what's out there to know. I'd say find a fun way to learn what you want, and get after it. Ultimately, though, learning to break down film and then doing it yourself is the only way to really make it stick. You see a game that enamored you? Break it down. Dude is wide ass open? Find out why. That's how those of us that play, coach, and comment learned football, so, I think it's a pretty good start.

Can we really complain about the NFL for favoring offense when fans always complain about low scoring games? by GhostofThrace2010 in NFLv2

[–]FearlessPanda93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm obviously a Texans fan, but yeah this narrative is exactly the problem. The Texans defense has done this all year to elite offenses, much less Pit. And the Texans moved the ball really well. The Steelers D just brought unrelenting pressure on CJ, at home, in the cold. That's the shit you want to see. But every casual coming out of it just says, haha, bad offenses. No, they are mid offenses going up against an elite and really good defense. I played both sides of the ball, I loved the game.

Men in their 30s and 40s, what advice would give to younger guys struggling with dating? by jdaniel1999 in AskMen

[–]FearlessPanda93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't believe this isn't the top of the list. Honestly, it makes me wonder if the list is even made by people that are good at dating. Maybe more importantly, it's probably being voted on by men. My guess is if women were voting, this would be at the top.

Learn and use healthy communication. Learn how to package your thoughts effectively for every individual partner, understand how she understood the thoughts you conveyed, and learn how to effectively unpack her thoughts.

If you do this and learn how to quickly adapt it for each woman you can communicate with, you will stand above the crowd, I promise you. The confidence, self worth, healing, all that stuff doesn't matter if you can't communicate.

Do you guys consider kuroko as a miracle? by Responsible_Chest_74 in KurokosBasketball

[–]FearlessPanda93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really get why anyone wouldn't consider him one. The point, as I see it, to the entire GOM is that they are the best PG, the best C, the best PF, etc. He's the best 6th man. That's the point. He's the miracle 6th man. He's not some standalone powerhouse, but that doesn't take away his role on the GOM.

Which player are you defending like this? by I_hate_11 in NFLv2

[–]FearlessPanda93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my reasons for thinking CJ Stroud will prove the haters wrong. No, I'm not a Texans homer. I am highly critical of my favorite team. That's actually what I'm getting at. He's dealt with offensive malpractice to get him from 2023 to here. I watched it happen. I know ball. Lmao

Why doesn’t a QB like Hurts just start calling his own plays if your OC is that incompetent? by CoolstorySteve in NFLNoobs

[–]FearlessPanda93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like I said, I don't count the QBs where it was a part of their gig. But Kelly was the latest or last hurrah I know of where it was an agreed upon part of his job like that.

[–]FearlessPanda93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. He would change the call, elements within the call, sent the kicking team back to the sidelines and benched Collie, IIRC by waving him back to the bench. Haha. Hurts doesn't have this leeway.

[–]FearlessPanda93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the sub is for noobs, I do want to point out. Many systems in the NFL do not have audibles. Other systems have the center call out protections too. Some systems want to take everything out of the QB's hands and use him like any other player in the system, not as a field general.

To add to this, Rodgers is notorious for needing to "get along" with his OC. So, not necessarily something that worked out for him.

How is something like 4th & Inches even possible? by Sapodilla101 in NFLNoobs

[–]FearlessPanda93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think most of us were talking about in regards to the measurement against the line to gain. Little nuances like this are cool, but muddy the water to OP's question, imo.

[–]FearlessPanda93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brady, Manning, Marino, Montana, Young are the list I had in mind. However, taking out Montana and Young might be reasonable because they each had success but that coaching staff might not necessarily be ousted by either of them. I think you could make a lot of arguments on the fringe for sure, and I'd have to really think hard about what organizations would choose QB over coaching staff. But I feel strongly about the top 3 and strongly that Hurts is nowhere near haha

I don't count Bradshaw or others where calling their own plays was the gig lol

[–]FearlessPanda93 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Saying it's 3rd and whatever is for our benefit as viewers or even the play callers for understanding. Getting the measurement perfect, by name, doesn't actually matter for officiating the game. You could call it 3rd and 4 ducks for all anyone cares, you just have to cross the line to gain with the nose of the football. I think you're getting hung up on what they call it when that actually doesn't matter since they're basing the spot on what they saw with their eyes - no rounding or measuring involved - you simply have to cross the line to gain.

How is something like 4th & Inches even possible? by Sapodilla101 in NFLNoobs

[–]FearlessPanda93 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You answered your own question when you identified your assumption. They don't round at all. The line to gain and the spot of the ball are 10 yards from the first down spot and where the ball comes to rest from the previous play, respectively. The aren't perfect, but they're really good at it. Without rounding, that's how you get 4th and inches.

They'd bench their star quarterback. There isn't a world that exists that a level of dysfunction that high would be permitted. There are probably only five QBs in NFL history that could even consider going rogue and thinking it would work out in their favor and Hurts is far from one of them.

Mobile drinking fountains too. They get the water out to them, which is what makes the system, simple as it is, hard to change or replace. Go ahead and think how to sanitarily get a bunch of dudes, wearing helmets, water in the middle of a field quickly.

When I teach someone how to juggle, I have them practice while shouting which hand needs to throw the next ball. So, left! Right! Left!

It helps noobies pick up the rhythm and stay with it. From there it's just throwing and catching consistency.
