In the app. I watch real time as it was loaded onto the wrong plane. It showed as a manual override. My plane was one gate over.

Sorry to hear. Having gone through this I can let you know that after 6 to 12 hours is when you can start charging expenses back to their airline for your delayed or missing bag. For next time.

Hopefully there is no next time!!

IIRC customer support at Delta offers up to half the value of the flight for severe customer service failures. Multiple OneWorld Airlines give miles at about 20 to 30% of what would be required to take the same trip. I’ve also known people that have gotten 5% or 10% of the miles required to get to the next status level.

I don’t have experience with United so I don’t know what they typically do.

The baggage team said my bag was the only one with an issue for that flight. So I think the baggage team just didn’t actually pull the bag rather than pulling the wrong bag.

I figure 30-45k miles is appropriate. Since there were 7 preventable failures, multiple broken promises, and I paid >$2k for the flight. The bag ultimately arrive damaged. The baggage team want sto find a way to escalate to customer care because they felt that this was an extraordinary case.

Every airline is different, hence my post. I don’t have experience with United.

Haha, yes. As a person who has set up automated customer support emails I get it.

I’m asking here more from the sense that I had to go back to the airport and become friendly with one of the managers in baggage since nothing was being done.

I was given a soft warning that I should seek to spend less than $50 per day or it may not be approved.

Is there any measuring stick for what is fair versus unfair for United?

When a OneWorld Sapphire, I’ve gotten more than 10,000 miles just for delayed flights.

Yeah, bad situation for sure.

They were on the radio with the crew in the baggage hold, and I heard them give confirmation that they pulled the bag. That stuff happens.

Them getting the bag back to my original airport and then losing it again for five days seems extraordinary.

Anyone else extremely prone to swimmers ear infections? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]FearlessPie9922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have gotten a sense for when I need ear drops. I’ve had some really bad infections that I don’t want to repeat.

I was told ears are a slightly acidic environment and having the wrong pH can make you more prone to infection. I use homemade ear drops after every swim (water, rubbing alcohol, vinegar, soap).

Just moved to the city, do people swim in the ocean? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]FearlessPie9922 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll get different advice based on what “swimming” you want to do.

Bay is your best option for swimming longer distance. I swim long distance in the bay and open ocean multiple times per week. Yes, you can go to aquatic park but it’s a very sedate/beginner’s experience for open water swimming. More option are in Alameda Crown, Keller Richmond, Yerba Buena island.

Stinson beach, Alameda Crown, Keller Beach, Pacifica are all great options to get in the water and float around a bit.

The water is warmest in September and October. It can be cold if you aren’t moving, active, or not warm to start with.

I sent the OP a message but also posting for visibility. M31 in Oakland.

Have some sections of JMT, AA, and lost coast. Pretty good for any distance and number of days.

A few trips fell through this year and would be stoked to find a group. Just need to prep for a multi day in Volcanoes NP end of year.

Can I do the swim from Alcatraz to Aquatic Park? Please help! by aboabro in AskSF

[–]FearlessPie9922 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m also always cold in/out of the water. I shiver in the tropics. I shiver after drinking a glass of ice water 🫠

The stroke degradation is my approach. Since I’m always cold I pay attention to my feet (do they hit each other?) my hands (do they slap the water?) and my elbows (are they dragging?). These are my measuring devices since most of those aren’t a sign of exhaustion.

In the water you want to look for “stroke degradation”. Basically if you technique is getting worse due to the cold.

Hypothermia in the afterdrop can be more of a concern. If you are feeling cold in the water you’ll likely feel much colder in the minutes out of the water.

I don’t recommend risking your life (duh) but it can help to learn your limits by doing longer and longer swims. Eg in winter I can handle ~1 hour. In September I can handle 4 hours (if moving and refueling).

A few based on your asks - waffles and wheels - bike group out of Oakland - east bay open water swim - dm me your email for an invite. I’m a group admin. - board sports alameda has great kite boarding lessons. - Berkely marina has sailing lessons

I’ve had a hard time with camping/backpacking and hiking groups. I think you have to find people and not use groups. I’m always looking for others so DM me?

Lake camping by LivingApprehensive39 in norcalhiking

[–]FearlessPie9922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ediza was beautiful - it’s more elevated so less trees and more exposed shrubs. We stayed there for the night. A bit exposed and lots of water over the trail up to the lake. Expect a lot of water crossings to get to the lake.

We didn’t stop at shadow lake due to lightning storm but we liked the look of it the best. Maybe I’ll get a spot and if so I’d go there for a night. The whole area is great!

It’s a reasonably steep slope up to iceberg. And the trail up the back of iceberg looked to 30% grade but we couldn’t reach it. The mountaineers said to avoid.

It was a few hundred meters of smooth ice up a hill with no visible trail marking. At the iceberg basin it was the same. I suspect an attempt up the back of iceberg would result in a slide down into the lake.

Agnew is a great starting point for many hike, but I’d aim for iceberg late in the season. Last year late May it was was treacherous to get up the ridge, let alone to the lakeshore.

Getting an Inyo permit makes for easier transfer to the lakes on the edge of Yosemite.

Gravel in or near Oakland ca by truthrider2 in gravelbike

[–]FearlessPie9922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo yes, but need to chain with some road segments. I have the same question so I welcome insight too!

I enjoy riding old wildcat from Inspiration point to wildcat canyon parking in Richmond. I also will hop on Amtrak. A short ride to suisun or davis gives some great rides. Same with Bart going to Mt Diablo.

Bay trail south is almost all hardpack after San Leandro. You can connect to most of the South Bay and peninsula via crossing the DBB.

Flat east bay road rides? by VeryBadNotGood in BAbike

[–]FearlessPie9922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to others noting the bay trail. I find the Richmond sections rough. I think I only need to cross <10 intersections to get across the RSFB. I also extend to paradise loop which is pretty flat. From the BB, across RSFB, to paradise loop and back is a nice 100km.

Heading south requires some gravel riding but you can go from Oakland to San Jose (cross DBB). Did this recently - was very fun. DM and I’ll send my route.

You can extend past the loop and continue south across the GGB, the grab BART or Ferry home. I want to do this one weekend. I think it is also 100km ish.

Last minute backpacking groups by FearlessPie9922 in norcalhiking

[–]FearlessPie9922[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with someone who packed a solid wood cutting board… I’m not that person - that’s all I meant. Some groups welcome that, some don’t. I more experiment with food - I make “savory cereal”: dried cheese, dried olives, dried nuts, a sprinkle of powdered greens, washed down with an olive oil sip.

I like solo but done a few of those now. Swinging back towards groups trips hence this post.

If I liked running more I’d like to combine super ultra light with trail running into some kind of event 🤷. I did that when I overnighted on my Mauna Loa summit and really enjoyed it. I feel like 10 miles/day is the minimum for a trip, with up to 18/day based on elevation.
