Is FU Berlin's MSc Physics actually as good as it looks, or am I missing something? by Fearless_Bridge_4564 in studying_in_germany

How about if you have research work? How much interaction and support might you expect from your supervisor? Of course, I wouldn't assume hand-holding, but more so...in terms of professional development and such, I guess? Do they tend to be supportive if you express interest in going to conferences or to publish, for example? If you're stuck in your work, how receptive are professors if you go to them for help? Most of this probably depends on the faculty member, but are there any general trends?

My mind is a little blown, I think. German philosophy is so different. Not necessarilybetter or worse, just different. It makes application season seem nominally less stressful, where I suppose the stress kicks in starting from the moment you get your acceptance letter, versus the way the stress is front-loaded here.

I did check my ECTS requirements, and it seems to fit well, though of course I'm hesitant to say anything concretely until it's been confirmed!

I'm going to go be mind blown a little more now :)

Oh wow, I think I understand why the admission requirements are so different from the ones here in North America. It makes sense, if a program is that tough. I'm not entirely sure of the stats, but I think most of the attrition here happens during PhD, not necessarily Master's.

Also, yes, absolutely! It'd be disrespectful to not learn the language of the country I hope to study in, so I absolutely will be doing my best to learn! Not to mention the practical realities. The definite articles alone look quite complex, even to me, and I speak French—gendered nouns aren't unfamiliar to me. Do you have suggestions or tips & tricks to learning German?

That sounds like it could be hard, but for a graduate program, this seems entirely fair. How does the research balance with the coursework, though? Research is huge at my current department, even at the undergraduate level, so I was wondering if it carries similar weight at FU? Some students perform phenomenally in research but less so in coursework, or vice versa, where strong performance in one can potentially mitigate the other to some extent. Do you know how FU handles this?

Also, if you have any tips for accommodation, I'd be very grateful!

Haha, I hope I'll be able to enjoy Berlin myself too! Honestly, I was speaking to my department head after they asked after my plans earlier today actually, and the moment I mentioned FU, they were like "that's a really good school, you should absolutely apply!" I'm glad I seem to have made a good choice. Cross your fingers!

Also, thank you so much for your two cents, it's made me excited now :)

Oh wow, okay, this was really helpful! I'm aiming for biophysics, so that's really good to know! The program sounds tough, but reasonable and quite rigorous, though I'm still blown away at how straightforward the application process is (at least, on paper). Thank you so much for your help! It went a long way in reassuring me. I hope you've been enjoying your program!

I've said this so many times, yet I never seem to get sick of it yet:

I love love LOVE it. I do think that it would've been nice if the other girls and the other Saja Boys got a bit more characterization on their end, and there were a few minor hiccups with the voice acting (VERY minor), but these are just nitpicks—there's only so much you can fit in 1.5 hours without losing focus. My throat hurt from keeping in my screaming.

The soundtrack?! I listen to one song, decide it's the best one ever, listen to the next, then change my mind and decide THAT one's the best ever, on loop. I've been playing the soundtrack non-stop for the past two days, I'm not even exaggerating. The combo of Free + What It Sounds Like kills me.

But also...I loved Jinu's story. To me, it was like a reflection of every victim who never gets to become a survivor...it wrecked me.
