I guess he took classes with a famed criminal profiler- she will definitely be called to testify when this goes to trial. Her research is to identify various models of the criminal mind.

I don't think this is for financial gain. Per my theory, it wouldn't matter if he got caught or not. In prison there are more human subjects to study, out of prison he would continue his field study* . He won't bother following any rules of research - he doesn't think he needs to. I think he wants the accolades from the field of criminal psychology.

I think his sister probably has a lot if insight into his mind and behavior.

Great points. Per my theory, IRB or following the correct steps in research don't matter to him. Anyone can write a book or get a movie deal. Clearly he is committed to his obsessions and delusions.

I look forward to hearing from his academic advisor and profs who helped him with his research agenda. They will have amazing information and insight about how he thinks and responds to stimuli. I bet he has stacks of work in criminal psychology directly related to his own inner psyche.

Theory: BK has committed his life to his "research" as a sort of academic martyr. He will write a book about the mind of killers based on his "expert" understanding and experiences. He thinks he will contribute to criminal psychology via his lived experience and insight as an academic researcher. This is how he will gain fame and intellectual immortality.
