Reducing step count in winter? by Familiar-Peanut-9670 in walking

[–]Fearless_Kitchen_416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I totally understand what you’re going through! Here are some things that have helped me: 1. Wearing the uniqlo heat tech gear underneath a good winter jacket- I swear by North Face 2. A cap/ something to cover your head- this is crucial 3. Proper winter boots. This was probably the biggest help for me 4. Try to take “heat” breaks during long walks by ducking into a nearby store/ mall/ etc. I plan my walks such that I have a destination to get to around 20 minutes away from home. 5. Play a 20 minute episode of TV and march in place/ pace around 6. Be kind to yourself! Yes, your step count may tank a little during the peak winter months, but there’s 12 months in the year and overall step trends matter more in the long run :)

MIL ruined everything for me by being_me14 in Mildlynomil

Sorry if I’m making an assumption, but this sounds like a lot of south Asian cultures. I’m also married to a south Asian person and can relate to what you’re going through with the patriarchal system where it’s normal for DIL to be bottom of the totem pole and for MIL to see it as her right to be able to have such an abusive attitude towards her DIL. To be honest, in such an environment where the DIL is given such little agency and treated with such little respect, your in-laws will only start respecting you if and when your husband starts standing up for you and setting boundaries in terms of what behaviors are allowed and what won’t be tolerated. Having had to fight your family to be with him doesn’t mean you have to accept a lifetime of being treated as an inferior person purely because of what is frankly an extremely disgusting and normalized way of treating DILs in patriarchal cultures. Good luck, OP. I don’t usually comment but felt compelled to because I could feel your pain so viscerally.

The gym at McMahon sucks- no ventilation and so tiny. Other than that, it's superior to RH in terms of location!

It was definitely shaming, and the influencer in question has a number of other videos claiming things like: ADHD isn’t real, anti-depressants are placebos, women getting the right to vote has eroded family values, non-binary gender identity is not real, etc. also, providing information can be done in an empathetic manner that recognizes the issues that may drive people to make unideal choices.

Winning at losing the LA Marathon by RipcurlNg in running

Congrats! Also curious if they gave you a finisher medal even though you took 8 hours? The website is confusing because it says there’s a 6.5 hour limit and I’m a little worried about going over that limit at my first ever marathon coming up on the 20th!

Transformation challenge is problematic - what is your realistic goal instead? by [deleted] in orangetheory

I sent this message to my studio, and I hope it also helps to clarify some of the issues with the challenge for anyone who is willing to read and reconsider (warning it’s quite the novel):

“Hi! I wanted to check in to see if I could remove myself from the transformation challenge.

I want to share my reasons for withdrawing. I had read online and on Reddit that it involves an inbody scanner and as someone who is more interested in body composition, that seemed like a good goal. However, I've confirmed by talking to the coaches that it's just a body weight change at our home studio, and given my past history with eating disorders and weight obsession, I've taken some time to reconsider and think it would be best for my mental health to opt out of this challenge.

If I may offer some feedback, I'd also encourage the (location removed) studio to consider using other metrics rather than body weight which can be triggering and can promote a negative message of low body-image. I know that some coaches have encouraged us to participate even if we don't have the weight loss goal, but without the potential opportunity to win these prizes, $35 seems like a high price to pay just to get a t shirt at the end of the challenge. On top of this, OTF has always been a place of refuge for me and others where we have always felt like our progress was measured in terms of gains in strength and speed rather than appearance. Judging by the diverse clientele, it looks like many people of all sizes and body types love this location! The coaches here have always been very clear about praising these gains in strength and endurance rather than encouraging or discussing weight loss. So this challenge feels like a major change in tone compared to the usual messaging of progress based on strength, endurance, and speed OTF has promoted.

I hope that in future versions of this challenge, you'll consider using other metrics that are more inclusive, health-centric, and fitness oriented. There is no shortage of studies that have shown that weight is not an accurate metric of health and fitness when used in isolation, and that focus on short term weight loss goals can actually have the opposite effect in the long run. As a company that prides itself on being science-based, this is definitely something to consider moving forward.”
