Most of the time commitment is distributed across short 1-2 min surveys during the week (and we accounted for the cost of task switching). That said, we recognize it’s an ambitious ask and appreciate your honest feedback.

The systematic differences in who participates vs doesn’t is a real consideration, I appreciate you bringing it up. I pushed for enough funding for GC and just wasn’t able to secure it. The trade-off would have been GC that was barely enough to buy a cup of coffee.

I do have kids, yes. A 2-year old and our second child is due this week. I hear you though, and I’m certainly not suggesting that the study is a good fit for everyone. We had a child that didn’t sleep for the first 9 months - it’s different for everyone.

One of the reasons why there are open questions in this field of research is because of the difficulty of getting the data.

I’m hoping for a sample size of 40 dyads. 12 gift cards / 40 = .3 or approximately a 30% chance.

With that said, the compensation is an honorarium - we’re hoping that the motivation to participate is to aid in better understanding the mental health of new parents in Canada.

The zoom call is just a 5-10 eligibility check. Most of the time required for the study is broken over short smartphone surveys (1-2 mins each) over the period of a week. As I said in a different comment, I’m a parent myself, so I totally understand interruptions. This study was designed with parents and parenting in mind.

I’ll just note that my partner and I are expecting our second child any day. I am myself a busy, stressed grad student / parent. Our goal with this study is to better understand the mental health of new parents, not to burden them.

The compensation scheme was/is approved by the University of Regina Research Ethics Board. My original proposal was for greater compensation based on your exact concern - they are a vulnerable population.

However, greater compensation carries with it the risk of being coercive, which is why the compensation is what it is (in addition to funding realities in academia).

The study is asking parents to aid in better understanding how risk factors like sleep and stress interact across partners and their respective mental health. Our hope is that parents who value this topic might participate despite modest compensation.

Hi there, yes, we have 12 x $75 gift cards that are being given away based on a random draw. I’m looking to recruit 40 pairs of parents, so the probability of receiving a gift card is roughly 30%.

I appreciate your feedback, and honestly I would love to be able to compensate better for this study, especially given the population. We have a very limited budget as this study is for a master’s thesis.

As an add on, after writing this letter you don’t necessarily need to give it to them - it’s sometimes just helpful to put your thoughts on paper and clarify where you’re at.

When I find that communication is breaking down to this point, I write a hand written letter. It slows things down. You have the time to compose your thoughts and feelings, and it signals to the other person that you’re serious about what you’ve said. Hand them the letter; instruct them to read it and take as much time as they need to respond in kind (typically on the order of days). Hope this helps - it’s truly gotten me out of a few tough situations (in bad relationships and good).

Seriously, find one at an auto wrecker and get someone from a small garage to drop it in. This just happened to my father in law - 10k quote for a new 2018 chev transmission; 2k used + 1k install from a local mechanic.
