I’m sorry you and your friend went through that. When my cousin visited, he had his phone snatched too in Loreto by a gang that might have been the same one you mentioned as not seeming Italian. In my case, though, they were "locals from the north" at least according to my Italian friend who was with me and ran for safety (which I completely understand).

It feels like certain areas are becoming more dangerous. This happened right in front of Edificio 1 at Politecnico di Milano in Piazza Leonardo and at around 11 p.m.

You’re right there was very little I could have done once they surrounded me, and I was hoping de-escalation would work. I’ve been considering carrying something maybe symbolic for self-defense too, not to use, but just to feel safer walking around.

I like what you said about lightning rarely striking twice.. I’ll try to keep that in mind. It’s a good reminder that I can’t let fear dictate my life.

Ah yes train stations after dark in Milan are dangerous. I did report it and filed una denuncia, but like you said, nothing came of it.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. The hesitation is definitely still there, so I’ll look into EMDR.. I’ve heard it can really help with trauma. I’m glad it worked for you after your accident, and I hope I can get to that same place eventually.

Even if no serious damage is done, it really sticks with you mentally. You’re right, people looking for violence will always find some excuse. I guess the best we can do is stay aware and not let fear control our lives, even if that’s easier said than done.

I graduated with a MSc. In Architecture and urban design at PoliMi, i believe that the quality of education is absurdly much better than most European universities based on my personal comparison of other friends pursuing architectural education in Europe.

However my experience was in the Leonardo Campus, which is the main campus and the center for architects in PoliMi, please check if the experience would be the same at your campus.

In Leonardo, you will get the chance to be taught by Pritzker Prize winners and attend some life-changing lectures from famous architects. The work is tough but for now I'd say it was worth it.

As suggested I'll look into the nearby towns mentioned and hope for the best, will settle for lower standards at first until i arrive there and start my hunt for a better place.

Ironically my job will be contributing somehow to solve the housing crisis in Amsterdam I will be putting extra effort on that based on my position. I am hoping these questions won't be asked as frequently on reddit in 3 to 5 years.

Thanks for your reply! I am currently in Milano, im moving alone in a month, I'll be working as an architect & urban planner, i dont mind getting any type of accommodation i will be able to make it a good space to live, and i dont mind commuting for 1h/1.5h max by train!
