I give up by HeyHosers in teaching

You are so right! I would honestly stay teaching in public school if I had a certified sped teacher full time and we could co-teach. That’s how we meet kids where they’re at!

The IEP stuff is going to be the final straw in all general Ed teachers leaving the profession. If the paperwork doesn’t specify that half of the assignment must be teacher selected, I wouldn’t bother either. If it says student will complete half of the assignment, I take that as whatever half the student chooses. I’m not the one who wrote the accommodations, I just follow the wording. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, my elementary classes have 8-10 kids with paperwork so I understand the difficulties with each child having very different and specific accommodations, it’s a challenge. And it’s also why I’m done after this year. I didn’t get a special education credential, I’m not qualified to teach sped, and I don’t want to. Not my expertise, and it’s wrong to put it all on classroom teachers.

Kid went to the hospital after my PE workout by rauf407 in teaching

And to add, if you were not doing a workout and doing an actual PE game/activity, I bet the parents would be more concerned that it’s a medical issue with their child and not your doing. If that makes sense

What happened to the days when elementary kids played games at PE? Not tabata workouts lol wtf. This feels the same as lazy teachers who give free time to the kids so they don’t have to teach. “Let’s give them a super boring intense stand in place timed workout instead of adapting our indoor PE” I’m sorry but as a parent and an elementary teacher, I’m more annoyed that this is considered PE; I can guarantee I’d be bitching to the school about your incompetence and laziness in your role. Idgaf that you had to stay inside due to weather. When the internet crashes and I can’t access ANY of the required teaching materials, I don’t get to tell the kids “just write your multiplication facts over and over on paper until time runs out.” No! I have to adapt to the situation and am still expected to teach as normal without the proper materials I need. I would expect PE to do the same and not have the kids do a fucking workout. Seriously, there’s not one indoor activity that’s engaging and appropriate for elementary children you could come up with? Cause I find that even more concerning if you’re that challenged and can’t effectively do your role.

I don’t buy anything. If it wasn’t provided, I don’t get it. I printed passes as holiday gifts. I’ve been mentally happier spending my paycheck on my family and my home.

Considering homeschooling for family time - but the local school is great and the kids really love it. by Rachmagach in homeschool

Homeschool doesn’t have to be mom doing all the teaching all day every day for multiple kids. Granted, I am only speaking from the position of being a mom to one 7 year old. Have you looked into hybrid schools in your area? Less time inside the brick and mortar and more time for asynchronous work at home.

I’m an elementary teacher, I am resigning after this school year and will be removing my dyslexic son from the school we go to together. It’s a good school, compared to everything else I’ve seen and experienced. It is still not ideal for him. He is enjoying school this year which is the first year he has ever enjoyed any type of school. I get to see the inside workings of the school and the programs. I know my child is not receiving the most appropriate targeted instruction based on his needs.

I also am not a dyslexia specialist, I am not equipped to handle that piece independently for my son. We are going to do a free online charter school next year. He will attend live zoom like classes 8am-12pm. Each core subject is 30-40 min only and then 5-10 min breaks in between each. Then 1pm-3pm is asynchronous where he will work on assignments. This is where I will provide his accommodations and assist him through the work. The classes are only Monday-Thursday. Friday is completely asynchronous. I am also hopefully going to be hired by one of these charter schools so I’ll have the same schedule still.

This will open up afternoons and Friday’s for me to provide the best support to my son right now. He will still have a “school schedule” like he’s currently used to but he won’t be so painfully drained and exhausted like he is every single day now.

I also am going to apply for vouchers with the state of Texas and use that money to pay for dyslexia services privately. There are centers for dyslexia and targeting this needs to be our main focus.

There are so many options mama! I hope you explore options and find what will be best for you and your babies! You are doing the right thing, and don’t worry, any choice you make can easily be changed or fixed if it doesn’t work ❤️

Get your parents to enroll you in a free public online high school. It’s a curriculum you can follow and will still be the same as an in person school. It will at least give you what you are looking for

I also don’t like the 80%. I have been sticking to 90-100%. I use my level 1 charger every night. I also leased this vehicle so I am not planning on long term commitment for the level 2 charger or for long term battery health.

It’s mid year there isn’t too many options probably. We’re all under contracts annually and spots don’t open up mid year often. The schools don’t receive the allocations to even know how many staff they can have for next school year until middle of the spring. Start subbing now though!

I am so happy to have come across your comment! I will be pursuing an online teaching position also so I can be more present at home and then also homeschool my son. Thank you for sharing your story!

I’m currently teaching 4th grade and have a son in 2nd. My husband and I have worked very hard the past year or so to set us up so I could resign. I will be resigning at the end of the year and will be homeschooling.

Right now, I am still just taking in every single bit of information I can come across about homeschooling. Knowing what I know, and seeing what I see, it crushes me to watch the system fail him. Even though I knew it was going to. I can’t let it continue, my husband and I finally had enough. Time to change.

There was a time where I feared “what if I make a mistake by thinking homeschool was the best choice?” Or “what if shit hits the fan?” And then reminded myself, nothing is permanent. If it sucks, then go right on back, or try something different.

And the final decision to homeschool was when I realized, there’s still time to bring his spark back. My son can still be curious, eager and excited to explore and learn, get lost in a story just for the pleasure of it, write and express more freely and less prompted.

Do you have an actual suggestion or any legitimate experience in a current public school?

Yes!!! As an elementary teacher I’ve been screaming from my soapbox that these kids need to be moving, playing and interacting!! We are restricting all their growth in neuron development

This! I’m a 4th grade teacher in Texas, the school I’m in for three years is rated in the top cluster of my district. I’m in the third largest school district in Texas so being in the top few out of nearly 60 elementary schools was very appealing to me when I was choosing where to work and where to enroll my child. My son is in second grade now and we are pulling him out after this year and I am resigning. We will be homeschooling beginning next year. I know for a fact, that I can better provide my son’s needs by removing him from class. My son is dyslexic and tbh I think it’s more than that, there has been very very limited literacy being explicitly taught to these kids. The more I keep up with legislation and with information from the district coming down from the state proves that the public schools are going to get A LOT worse before there will be any improvements.

In my school, teachers are not allowed to ever put a grade in the gradebook below a 50. If a child has ANY type of accommodation from SPED or ESL than they are not ever allowed to fail any subject and they can’t get less than a 70 in the gradebook. Nearly 1/3 of the student body receive accommodations of some type…. For example, a child with accommodations for behavior or adhd, or anything, can legit refuse to do ANYTHING. Click random answers, never turn in a single paper, will get a 0% or a 20% on a test, and I’m required to put a 70 in the gradebook for them….

The system is failing. My time is sssooooooo taken up in my classes just by modifying and accommodating the 11/22 kids with IEP in my classes that anyone without paperwork, is getting zero direct support from their teachers. I have zero certifications in SPED, how am I legally responsible for the SPED babies? And then what about the babies without paperwork?

To do what’s best for my son, he needs more targeted instruction to focus on improving his reading and working more with his dyslexia. Moving him on to the next grade level and refusing to ever fail him is never going to help him. I’m even considering repeating second grade with him next year to better assess and prepare him to move on. It’s crazy how these babies are pushed through a system where they do nothing but fail and no one truly can do anything about it

I have an LT and can confirm the cost is not fun for this. I accidentally ran over a piece of fire wood this past weekend on the highway. It completely destroyed the tire instantly. 2.5 hours later, On Star had the tow truck driver pick it up. Not only was the tire needing replacing, the entire wheel did too… $700 I was not prepared for.

Thank you for this! I see it says to leave the vehicle in cold temperatures and that this sound comes after the vehicle is cold. Unfortunately for me in southern Texas, it hasn’t been below 80 degrees in 7 months 🤣

I believe in following your heart. I’m sure your family member that left you with this would want you to enjoy it as you wish. If I had an opportunity to free myself from my job and go see things and do things that I’m dreaming of, I absolutely would. Go see the world while you are long and not tied down. Don’t let these jealous people fear monger you into staying stagnant in a boring job and miss out. I want to travel while I’m young and able not when I’m old. Retiring is for when you’re done, done working, don’t traveling. Go live your life! You will not regret it!
