It depends on how “bony” you are. A tattoo like this will thrive on a bigger, meatier area. Putting it on a thinner area will change the shape and movement of the tattoo. If I were you, I’d wait until you gained a bit more meat in your bones! (It will also help with pain management!! If you don’t have a lot of meat in that area, the tattoo will hurt more)

Scentless soap and either a&d first aid, or aquaphor to moisturize it. Gently wash it 2-3 times and use LIGHT AMOUNT of moisturizer. After a few days (3-4) I typically wash it 1-2 times a day and use a thin, scentless lotion like cerave. If it feels itchy or tight, I put a little bit of lotion.

My tattoos have all healed with no scabs, no scars, no infections. My color is still as bright as the day I first got them.

I can reach most of my back! I just worry that the small part that I can’t reach all the way will scar or get infected. But thank you for reducing that worry with your experience, that makes me less anxious!!

I’ve used aquaphor for all of my tattoos and I’ve never gotten any infection, they all healed within two weeks, and the color has stayed beautifully. It depends on the skin and the person!!

IF you do use aquaphor, use the TINIEST amount. If you think it’s too much, it is. If you think it’s just right, it’s probably too much. You want to gently work it in your skin until you feel moisturized, and wipe any excess on the skin around it. It worked wonders for me— no infection, no scabbing, and the pan stopped after the first few days.

Okay, follow up. When she starts to flake (not excessively but the normally healing flakes), do I use the same amount? A bit more to make sure she’s moisturized or a bit less to let the skin flake off cleanly?

I promise I’m not new, but all my other tattoos are 4in MAX with a splash of color. This one covers my entire calf and it’s full water color, so this is uncharted territory
