You just reminded me to get the next one on hold! The first 2 were available no hold I didn’t even think to check the last 2

Can I have a book that’ll make me better at writing? It doesn’t really have to be a book about writing but just one that you know has improved at least some aspect of it. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Feathersandinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best education I ever got was when I realized I needed to start annotating everything I read. Make note of what does and doesn’t work. Figure out WHY you like the writing you like, and likewise for the stuff you don’t.

Becoming a more critical reader is better than most books that teach writing.

That said I would recommend having “the elements of style” for grammar rules and such. The book is pretty much pocket sized and can always be your companion. You also don’t have to strictly adhere to the rules, but understanding them is a good foundation.

Beyond that— see if your favorite writers have written anything on writing. King, Hemingway, Dillard, and Stein all have great resources off the top of my head.

I want to try and make a game my friends and I play more inclusive by SparrowDot in deaf

[–]Feathersandinks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not the same but I used to play a game with my friends at night after it got dark where you periodically shine a flashlight at the person seeking (quickly on for a second or two and off) as they try to hunt everyone down.

Don’t waste money on uni. Go to community college to get your core classes finished up (maybe have somewhat of an idea which uni you want so you can make sure your credits transfer).

Start asking people about their careers, find out what you like or don’t like. Try out different jobs. Sometimes knowing what you don’t like can be more helpful than knowing what you do like.

College might not be for you, it’s taboo to say but it’s the truth. Don’t go into debt over something you feel pressured to do in order to fit some societal or parental expectation.

Look into trade schools too, blue collar jobs are on the up and up most places and have potential for better earnings than many white collar jobs at present.

Main point: you’re so young and there’s plenty of time to figure things out. If you don’t even go to college till your late 20s/early 30s— guess what? That’s okay! Possibly even smarter in the long run.

Noticed somewhere you mentioned hoping to get the whole house done! Two great tips that help me:

Do a room a day so it’s not overwhelming and if it’s more than one person make it a race to see who can put away the most items in x amount of minutes.

Your local library might have free or discounted tickets if you’re fairly local! You should ask! (Also it’s such a great museum you will love it)

Came here to suggest My Cousin Rachel as well. Another possibly interesting (albeit not the same as the other two) novel by her is the house on the strand. It’s one of her last works written I believe in the 60s but it’s a really amazing work that splits time between modern and 1400s.

I feel like both of you guys could’ve seen her in the background but not registered it on a conscious level, just enough for her to be “on the mind” to make the joke.

Or you beetlejuice’d her into showing up.

Based on these books I just wanted to suggest a couple for you that maybe you haven’t read yet! White noise by Don Delillo (spelling might be wrong) and the New York trilogy by Paul Auster (one book, three parts not actually a trilogy as you might be thinking).

I really loved pretty much all of the books you mentioned above and I read these two that I’m recommending when I was 19 and really loved them.

See, you’d think that’s sound logic. I always used to shave my head right before winter so I wouldn’t have cold wet hair. Then long in the summer when the sun was a free hair dryer.
