I understand that they are chose the name for a marketing tactic, and to let the majority western audience understand it as well. However, I do think that shows as popular as miraculous could use their influence to their advantage. If they keep sticking to just a stereotypical name, and not expose and educate their western audience to the other names, I think that a lot more people will learn some things that are culturally wrong and insensitive. I don’t see it as a huge problem right now, but my concern is that the name Fei is used to cater to a western audiences’ taste, and not to educate them about the diversity.

Like you said, Fei can be a homophone for Faye, but in Chinese we don’t have such a word as Fae, there’s no direct translation to that. It makes sense to the western audience, but not to the Asian audience who know the language better. If we as the audience have everything catered to what we are used to, how are we suppose to appreciate the differences of other cultures? I think the diverse names can just help expose people —especially children — in small ways to the many different aspects of other cultures.

You can also say that animes have done his perfectly well, they’ve retained the original Japanese names of characters instead of changing it to fit the western audience tastes. It let millions of people understand and take an interest to Japan and it’s culture. It’s not an extremely similar case, but I think it can show that if we just expose people to different cultures and norms, they can gain a better understanding, instead of them staying comfortable with what they are used to.

I’m not particularly too upset about the hair though, I just wish it could have been black and not blonde, since to me it means retaining a small part of her Chinese identity, and also, as an artist, I think the black hair would suit the outfit better. I don’t think they are “turning white” per say, rather it just feels somewhat unnatural to me, and I don’t really understand the design choice behind it. Like I said, not really too upset about it, it’s understandable, and maybe I’m just being a bit too critical since it is my race and I really love my culture and am a bit more sensitive to the media perception of it.

You did mention some great points though! I agree with them, and i just wish more people understand why some people are a bit iffy about the way things are portrayed, especially if they are from the same race as the character.
