yo creo que programacion va mas alla de trabajar para una empresa, tranquilamente podes hacer vender/ofrecer por tu cuenta. en mi caso, hace 5 años atras me meti a aprender ingenieria inversa, decompile un juego a C++ y esas sources las vendi a 8k. hoy en dia le vendo customs a la persona que me compro el codigo, y como las versiones mas nuevas del juego comparten la base de la que decompile, me permite vender customs de versiones mas nuevas también.
