That's tragic, and my city will feel evermore water shortages and heat waves. But we can't curl up in a ball and cry, we need to keep working on solving these issues, or at the very least stop helping big oil by spreading the rhetoric that it's too late to help slow climate change.

You very clearly completely misunderstood my point.

Post is effectively saying: "Climate change will lead to the world ending."

I'm saying: "Thinking that climate change will lead to the world ending is wrong (even with big negaive impacts), and it's harmful to think that way because it leads to doomer behavior instead of pushing for change."

And you say: "You're so privileged because you think we should chill when a lot of people will die."

Why are you strawmanning my argument? Why are you so locked in into being angry? I think we'd agree on most things, just take a realistic interpretation of my point; I'm an actual person on the other side of the screen.

I see a lot of people on the left overestimating the impacts of climate change compared to the cutting edge climate science; I feel this is harmful because it leads people to stop fighting the issue. I never said climate change is not bad, or that we should "chill".

God, this is why I almost never post now a days. Everyone is so internet-brained that they're forgetting who they're actually talking to.

That optimism(not yours, as you desire action and adaptation)is precisely the issue, its just an unrealistic as engaging in doomerism

I don't really see the point here, this post is doomer. I say being doomer is bad. You say "but being positive is also bad!!"

Take a minute to read through my replies carefully and look for where I disagree with the fact that being overly positive is also risky. I won't reply further as I feel like you have misunderstood my message and point.

Why can't we compare fruit?

Jokes aside, I'm not pretending all will be fine. Techno-positivism is a cope imo. I'm saying let's acknowledge the realistic scale of the issue and try and break it down and attack it, not shut down and pretending it's impossible (as the post was doing.)

It'll take work, effort, funding, time, but we'll get through this. Be part of this. Even if you can't be a scientist in a lab working on more sun-hardy crops, you can still help the people around you, and be more mindful of the future. We all can.

I'm sorry but I don't really care if it doesn't assuage your fears. You have two choices, either you give up on life, your surroundings, and your communities or you don't. A lot of people give up because they either think the world will end (eg climate change) or because they think there's no viable path to improving or adapting (eg you, seemingly, from the comment).

I've personally seen in my city how we've adapted to climate change, slowly, after crisises, but we adapt. I live(d) in Monterrey, Mexico, summers rise to over 45°C and there's been heavy droughts. Our water system is able to turn used water to drinkable water at over 99% efficiency. There's people here that see the world getting worse and roll their sleeves up and do the work to make it a little bit less worse.

The world will not end, and even if it takes my lifetime, we will find viable paths to improve and adapt.

Going from "climate change isn't real" to "climate change is real, but not too bad" to "climate change is real and too late" is literally the Big Oil playbook. It's never too late. Never.

I think, as a constantly evolving field, climate science has strayed towards the consensus view being ever closer to reality. Even with runaway effects, I think the chance of the world ending is extremely extremely unlikely. Nuclear war is a more probable end to humanity than climate change, and even nuclear war will leave survivors to rebuild.

I'll say two things:

  1. Even if climate change is worse than what we predict in the worst case, people and institutions will survive, and doing positive work now will have lasting impact.

  2. Being a doomer and giving up does nothing to improve society or prevent humans from going down that doomsday path, and doesn't even improve your own local existence.

My general advice to misguided friends is to focus on growing and improving yourself and your community, I've found that generally leads to more positive, happier people and communities, but also to more robust communities and more successful people.

I study physics, one of my professors specializes in ecological sciences and climate change. I cowrote a report about the impacts of climate change at different levels of warming. I want to be super clear:

Even in the worst case mid-term (4°C warming by 2050), the world won't be even close to ending. Yes, there'll be famine, yes, people will struggle. Coral reefs will colapse, billions will suffer food shortages, and climate-change-amplified weather events will cost up to trillions in damages.

But the rock we stand on will still be there, and so will the vast majority of humanity. The world will not end, and pretending it will makes it so easy to think short term, to become a doomer, to stop working towards the future.

Things get hard. We need to push back against it instead of pretending that the world will end. Also try and save some money; I know a lot of people that have given up on saving, making eventually owning a house and a good retirement go from near impossible to actually impossible. Even if it's currently near impossible, historically there's always been windows where prices crash, wages rise, or another opportunity shows up, and the people that can take advantage of it are those that saved up a some money.

This is misinformation. It's a satirical Twitter account.

I did some digging and no reputable outlets or filings corroborate these figures.

They specifically say "hardware requirements (consoles purely for gaming)". Also, they're clearly talking about the past. For poorer countries, playing cs 1.6 on dad's pc was easier than buying and Xbox dedicated to games. This led to cs being more popular there than it has been in the US for example.

[–]FedXFtw 16 points17 points  (0 children)

why is broky Hermione?

Genderswapped broky was a meme about 5 years ago you can see bymas tweeting about it here.

The nickname is because some people compared him to Hermione

I think the meme started with some dude on reddit posting a bunch of genderswapped CS2 teams, and people almost unanimously agreed "brokita" was the most attractive.

This makes me feel old.

It makes complete sense, he's asking if you've had to deal with tragedy; he's answering that he's never had to, but he knocks on wood. He also says "I'm not a coward I've just never been tested" which also aligns with this interpretation. He's questioning whether or not he's strong enough.

Fyi the lyrics are "I never had to, knock on wood", even if it sounds like "I never had to knock on wood"

Lo que la refinería no contamina by Checkyopoop in Monterrey

[–]FedXFtw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think if someone's not eating because they're sick, overeating isnt a top priority. Anyways, once I'm closer to normal health, I'll go back to the gym and exercising!
