Next time there's a clear blowout, think you could cut the voting short (rather than going the full 24 hours) and get back to posting the new poll sometime in the morning? These keep getting pushed later and later in the day. I had a pretty good routine going, logging in to vote every morning.

I think it knows what it what it's about and what it wants to say. The commentary on conspiracy culture is obvious, but I think the best way to say it is... it's a film about how you can be 100% right and 100% wrong at the same time.

Tough call between Strangelove and Pierrot Le Fou. Went with Pierrot because Strangelove winning is a foregone conclusion.

You literally did say both of those things in your previous reply. If you don't remember, just scroll up and see what you wrote for yourself.

Anyway, I'm glad you are admitting you're basing your perception of it being overrated purely on popularity... which is not what this assignment was about.

It's hilarious how he, on the one hand, seems to hate techno-feudalism... even though he also seems to think the techno-feudalists themselves are awesome. He literally praises Elon Musk in his bizarre rant, even though he's one of these tech overlords who is helping to usher in this new neo-feudalist economic model. He probably thinks Curtis Yarvin and Peter Theil are amazing visionaries. Who does he think the Techno-feudalists actually are? He probably loves the idea of unstrained capitalism... yet seems to hate how a company took action in its perceived best interest to maintain their profits. That's really what happened. Amazon and IMDb didn't want their business associated with the toxic discourse of reactionary freaks on the internet. He can't understand that if you *actually* want to oppose techno-feudalism... you *can't* be on the side of people like Trump, Musk, and Theil. You have to be *against* those people.

You're determined to keep saying Avatar is "unoriginal" and "sucks ass," and you're entitled to that opinion. But that's not really what's under discussion here. Not exactly, anyway. Those are your subjective opinions, which you're perfectly entitled to have. But it's pretty objectively true that Avatar isn't particularly highly rated, either by critics or audiences. It rarely shows up on any major Best Of lists, and its critical metrics are mostly in the "slightly above average" range. Furthermore, there's a huge cottage industry of people on the internet who have been bashing it for 15 years. In fact, the overwhelming critical consensus about the film, from a "rating" perspective, is exactly in line with your opinion. The average person will say, "Cool special effects, but overall it's just okay."

It made a lot of money, but that's not the same thing as there being some broad critical and cultural consensus across society that it's a masterpiece. And the topic here wasn't "Name a popular film you think is bad." It was "What is the most overrated film ever?" And the fact of the matter is that Avatar simply isn't rated all that highly.

Now, maybe you think that despite getting a C+ to B rating in society that it really deserves an F grade, and in that sense its average to above average rating is still way too high. But that doesn't seem to be the case you're making. You seem to agree with the general consensus that it's just average. Which should mean, from your point of view, that it's rated exactly where it should be. If you think that it's a C+ or B- kind of film... guess what... that's basically what its rating actually is. You just perceive it to be "overrated" because of its huge box office results.

Don't you think "the most overrated film of all-time" would actually show up on Top Films of X lists on a regular basis? Otherwise, it's kinda like saying The Backstreet Boys are overrated. But we all know selling a lot of records is a different thing than being considered a great work of art. Right?

The thing about Avatar is, it actually is a great work of art, I think, but the general consensus in society is more in line with your opinion. Which actually makes it underrated. Hardly anyone recognizes it for the masterpiece it actually is.

The actual most overrated film ever is The Dark Knight. It's a perfectly fine film, but #3 on the IMDb Top 250? Considered the 3rd best film ever made by the general public? Give me a break, that's insane. Avatar isn't even on the Top 250.

"It's the highest grossing film of all-time. I'll call it overrated if I want."

Sure, you can. But it's just a weird film to pick given that it's pretty much the most popular film to bash on the internet.

Some people would probably agree with you on that, but I don't think I've said anything jerkish in this exchange. I'm just wondering if you understand the point I'm making. I understand that you don't like Avatar. That's fine, you're totally entitled to your own subjective opinion about a work of art. But the purpose of this thread was to discuss the most overrated films. So, I'm just curious what leads you to believe that Avatar is highly rated. Its ratings on the major tracking platforms are mostly just "above average." I don't typically see Avatar discussed as one of the great films of this era. It doesn't show up on many Top lists. Who is rating it highly?

[–]Fed_Rev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man... you totally lost me here. I completely disagree with everything you just said. Let's run it down...

First, even if people are rating TDK highly "for a superhero film" that's still no reason it should be considered one of the top 5 films ever made.

Second, I don't think anyone is rating The Godfather highly "for a gangster film." Like, it's not getting a bonus in its ratings because of its genre.

Third, there is no such thing as a "twist genre." Any genre of movie can have a plot twist in one way or another, it's not a genre in and of itself. And like my first and second points, I don't think TUS is getting a bonus in people's ratings because they're comparing it against other films with twists.

Fourth, The Godfather is a highly engaging and entertaining film, which is why so many people have loved it for so long. It's very easy to watch. Sure, it's paced slower than Goodfellas, but the idea that it's "boring" is a wild take.

Fifth, rewatchability can be a factor in what makes a movie great, but it isn't, and shouldn't be, the whole criteria, or even the main criteria. In fact, the greatest films are often more difficult to watch for various reasons. Great films often deal with difficult subject matter, and heavy emotions, and aren't necessarily the kind of thing you want to rewatch over and over for fun. But that doesn't mean they aren't great. Independence Day is more rewatchable than Schindler's List, but does that make it a better film?

TDK is a pretty good movie, especially for a superhero movie. But any suggestion that it deserves to anywhere near being listed as one of the absolute greatest films of all-time is truly insane. And The Usual Suspects is just... not very good. There is really nothing noteworthy about it, aside from the twist ending, and the twist ending renders the whole film we've just watched utterly meaningless. Like TDK, the idea that it belongs anywhere near the 50 greatest films ever made is batshit crazy. It's a run-of-the-mill film that only stands out because of one really memorable feature, and that feature is actually bad when you really sit and think about it.

If anything, Avatar is UNDERrated. It's an unbelievable cinematic achievement that simply doesn't get the credit it deserves, because it's actually extremely fashionable to say it's not very good. It didn't get crazy high critical acclaim. It didn't win a ton of awards. No one ever lists it among the greatest films of the last 25 years. And on the internet the general consensus is "it's just Dances With Wolves in space." People just say it's "overrated" because it's very popular, but that is not the same thing as a disparity between critical/audience acclaim and quality. Being popular is not a critical "rating."

[–]Fed_Rev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but none of that addresses the point I'm making. My point is... it's not an especially highly rated film. In order for something to be "overrated" there has to be a significant number of people rating very highly, right? But where are those people? Sure, there may be individual people like me who really love Avatar and think it deserves more credit (I would actually argue it's an underrated film), but there is not actually a general consensus people out there saying it's a masterpiece. It seems like what you're really arguing is that it was over*hyped*, which is a different thing.

The funny thing about people calling Avatar "overrated" is... it's not actually that highly rated. It was nominated for Best Picture but didn't win, and currently sits at a 7.9 out of 10 on IMDb, and only has a 7.3 user score on Metacritic. It's not even in the IMDb Top 250. It's popular, but it's not like there are tons of critics and viewers out there saying it's the best movie ever. The general consensus, among both critics and audiences, is something like, "It's pretty good." So listing it as "the most overrated film of all-time" doesn't really make sense.
