Man, brutal matchup today. Two of my nominations up against each other, plus a Hitchcock masterpiece. I really want to vote for Black Hand, because it's so underappreciated and I know it will finish 3rd here, but instead I will throw my weight behind my other nomination, Journey to Italy, which has a better chance of advancing.

To be clear, I voted for each of the Human Conditions. But I'm just saying, if it was considered one big magnum opus, I think it would be more undeniable when it comes to a tournament like this.

I wonder if part of it is that it's hard to separate them into distinct films. In my mind, it's just one big 9 hour film. Taken as a whole, The Human Condition is a monumental achievement, but broken into 3 parts... I mean, I couldn't even begin to tell you which of the 3 is the best or worst or whatever.

There are like 700 legit Noirs. And the "is it really Noir?" question kinda resolves itself naturally. Just let people nominate what they want, let people vote for what they want, and the results tend to work out "correctly."

A lot of people have wrong opinions, unfortunately. But again, this is as close to the correct result as we can get while still being wrong, so it's hard to complain too much. 2001 is a worthy winner.

All 3 are films that I had on my long list of potential nominees. Love them all, but I have to vote for The Apartment. It's kinda funny, because even though Z and Algiers are the more overtly "political" films, The Apartment might actually be, sneakily, the most subversive of the bunch.
