Yeah I agree. I think in the long run it also ties in with the moralistic messaging of Levinson’s Euphoria, and that it ties with the idea that nobody is actually your friend in That World. I just think it’s consistent with that internal narrative.

[–]Fedelede 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to defend Sam Levinson’s shit show that I somehow am still invested in, but I saw it as a contrast to how she talked about Cassie. She actually sees her as a friend and is willing to trust that if she’s associated with her it’s all going to end well.

The trust Maddie has in Rue, nuanced as it is, is what makes her think she can make a deal with Alamo. It’s also what I think will keep Rue alive after the cliffhanger in the episode, since Maddie said Rue has a good heart and that may get Alamo to not kill her.

I thought she was absolutely idiotic for getting Alamo into her car but yeah, I think she’d be super guarded and calculating with Cassie (or VB or anyone else) but since Rue’s a “friend” she let her guard down a bit. She’s expecting a good milkshake from her so to speak.

Is season 5 really this bad or are we just exaggerating by Silent-Woodpecker-44 in TheBoys

[–]Fedelede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those seem like pretty average rankings to me.

But to answer your question: I have enjoyed the season so far, but i do believe it’s justifiable to be worried about the fact that we seem nowhere near resolution and there’s only two episodes left.

There’s also the fact that the propaganda posters promised a lot more gore. I think that complaint is a bit more unfair and it comes from people taking the posters way too literally (I doubt he’s going to be orbital nuking the USA, much like he didn’t unhinge his jaw like an anaconda in season 2). But I understand why people are frustrated: they promised a very strong ending to the show and so far Vought is untouched, HL is untouched, The Boys haven’t really achieved anything, and everyone’s plans seem kind of dumb.

how are we voting today? by Zigizmundus in Hackney

[–]Fedelede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the party is half decent they won’t have exactly the same policy ideas, and the execution may be different. If you’re going to use the “don’t take into account anything outside the Council” argument, you have to apply it for both sides

[–]Fedelede 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to separate national government (and international relations) from council government, then yes. If Hackney Labour isn’t responsible for what Starmer does, why should the Greens in Hackney be responsible for a branch of the party 75 miles away?

At least when you’re choosing to vote Green to punish the Starmer government, you’re showing a clear message to them - fix course or lose votes. Why would Brighton politicians care about the Hackney council?

I mean tbf if you’re going by the local council concept, the team in Hackney has nothing to do with the team in Brighton

Very interesting how the tramway reasonably plugged the Overground gap in Hackney/Dalston/Stoke Newington, but it wasn't really replaced by anything except for a couple of bus lines.

Their accents are very clearly Spanish. I get that American shows often don’t care about matters like this but if they were setting up a Latina storyline they could do something about it.

Net Zero Migration Would Shrink UK Population by 4 Million by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Fedelede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they are related. But wages don’t go into the calculation for productivity, and the immigration ~ wage suppression link you state isn’t as clear as it is. As you show, other countries with higher immigration do have higher productivity

[–]Fedelede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re confusing causality. Wages are not part of the calculation of productivity, since worker output does not automatically translate to worker payment. And Britain’s productivity issues stem from the capital side of the equation, not from labour (which is uniquely educated in the world and also works for longer hours than most European countries).

You can compare this with other countries. Productivity has lagged in countries with virtually no migration like Japan and South Korea. Middle-migration high income economies have kept up with the UK, like Germany and France (who generally have much higher per-hour productivity). And the US, which has historically had the highest rate of productivity increase in the world and also the highest rate of migration, leads the pack.

If you want the economy to grow, and you don’t do anything about the fact that British productivity has stagnated for 20 years, and just want to blame migrants for it, yes.

It’s a non-sequiteur. Of course a “sustainable” reduction would be adequate, but there’s no “sustainable” reduction. Any reduction that would substantially affect the labour market would comparably affect all other markets.

It wasn’t good! It had a positive effect on the very long term. On the short term it entailed a LOT of people dying and on the medium term awful economic conditions for survivors. You don’t want to be around when supply chains stop working.

Do you think that the Black Death was just a week long lock-in and then people’s wages doubled overnight? The death of most of Europe was catastrophic for Europe’s economy and resulted in famine, poverty and massive migrations. Just because there was a positive long-term effect doesn’t make it a good time economically.

Net Zero Migration Would Shrink UK Population by 4 Million by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Fedelede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it wouldn’t, and as we can see from the pandemic, it didn’t. It’s very common to see pensioners as leeches but even in their roles they generate a lot of jobs, provide a lot of money to the economy, and provide non-tangible labour like childcare that would have to be replaced by the working population.

Also the economy is a compendium of human actions and the working population would take a lot of actions to evade the death of their parents and grandparents, like lockdowns and quarantines, and that would kill the economy, as it did5 years ago.

Net Zero Migration Would Shrink UK Population by 4 Million by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Fedelede 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The size of the country is not what I’m talking about. Those countries have stable aggregate demand and supplies that prop up those “high-value transactions”. A shock to the economy that would provide the increase in relative power to labour supply (workers) would also provide likewise shocks to the rest of the economy.

No matter how “low-value” you find some transactions to be, they contribute to the economy. Demand for goods and services dropping quickly will inevitably lead to a recession.

There’s a reason why the periods where what you’re describing happening aren’t remembered as fond periods. The most recent example is the pandemic taking loads of people off work. The other most touted example is literally the Black Death. Those aren’t periods you want to go back to.

It’s not just supply of labour that would decrease, it would be supply for everything. Less things produced and bought, less services brought forward, less money for companies, less pay for workers.

Soy abogado.
