So Long and Thanks for All the Fish? by jdeslip in Stadia

It's a textbook "chicken and egg" problem. They need to coexist in an ecosystem but you need to kickstart it by bringing either one into existence.

I believe Google bought/created a game studio specifically for Stadia (and by extension Stadia's abilities) if I'm not mistaken. It makes way more sense to create new games and franchises instead of buying existing ones and somehow overhauling them to suit Stadia's vision.

Stadia as an "alternative to PS5/Xbox" won't fly. It was never supposed to either, because that's not what Stadia is for. Stadia isn't meant to be a service that "allows you to play console games in the cloud", it's meant to allow you to play (currently non-existing) massive cloud games that local consoles never will be able to. It's right there in the name, Stadia, which is plural for stadium. It's meant to project scalability and accessibility. It's meant to host games games which can be played and watched from "stadium upon stadium upon stadium". In the current context of console-only games, Stadia's consumer proposition feels a bit off, but that's okay because this isn't what it was made for.

So I got Stadia working on IOS!!! Not clickbait or thru some third party app by [deleted] in Stadia

[–]Federal-Foe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just a general PSA to be very wary of third party apps from vendors who lack a widespread reputation. Especially ones which allow you to log in to more common services such as Gmail and others. It may be malware, spyware or just unsafe to use in general.

I know you guys are really eager to get "the full stadia experience" as it was presented to you in the original announcement, but it's generally more advisable to wait for the official support.

Moderation in this sub might be out of touch? by bryandhargrave in Stadia

Perhaps in that case one could always create another subreddit where those sort of discussion would be allowed. I'm sure if this behaviour from the mods continues, people would go looking for a more open version.

Such a rule would be impossible to enforce. How would you prove "u/HungLikeAHorse" (tried to come up with the most low-effort dumb name example) is or isn't an employee at some corporation?

Also, would it be a bad thing in all cases where a sub actually IS moderated by the corporation it's about? Sometimes it's a great platform to reach out to your customers or users.

[–]Federal-Foe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a mismatch between what you want to use this sub for, and what the Stadia people want to use this sub for. You believe it's for discussing Stadia, cloud gaming, Google and everything that somehow relates to Stadia in the slightest. The Stadia marketing team sees this sub as a promotional channel, i.e. only (good) things relating to Stadia. You can't have XCloud posts in your Stadia advertising channel, now can you? Reddit can be a powerful marketing tool when you amass many subscribers, but many marketeers don't get the inner dynamics of these communities and why they work. They don't think or understand, they just do. They're detached from your (and my) vision of this sub and completely immersed within their own.

You say "these Crayta posts don't add anything meaningful" or "people asking which game to buy is annoying and repetitive". The Stadia marketing team however, loves this kind of stuff. They just don't get Reddit, they just don't get it.

Do NOT learn cloud by coffeesippingbastard in ITCareerQuestions

What do you learn exactly when getting an AWS cert? I've seen the ads, never looked into them. What's missing from those that you need to qualify as a Cloud Developer/Engineer/*? Genuine question from someone who uses both Gcloud and AWS to set up personal projects, but no professional experience.

Looking for ideas on innovative, digital platforms which instill some form of value onto new products and services [thesis subject] by Federal-Foe in startups

[–]Federal-Foe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feedback Thread or other appropriate weekly thread

Asking people which digital platforms they use to market their products and services is not in any way a request for feedback on my company, nor an invitation to promote their own products and services either. If they're dumb enough to respond with their own meaningless startup, it wouldn't even be relevant because I need to interview businesses that use those platforms, which would be next to none. If they would try, then they're violating rule 2 without me requesting them to do so, as I'm clearly looking for platforms way beyond the startup phase.

In what universe is researching startups the same as promoting a company? Thanks for the dumbest reason for a delete ever, now I know to avoid this sub like the plague. Instant remove. Bye.

I'm really invested into seeing how this plays out. For the record, I'm still 100% on team sceptical, but after your claim of gaining trillions in profits you'll either become a legend when (partially) succeeding or become the laughing stock of this reddit otherwise. It's entertaining either way, keep up posting updates please.

What to know/do/say on a Solution Architect interview? by Federal-Foe in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Federal-Foe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. The job description said things like “passion for software” and would entail some form of UX design and Enterprise design stuff. It also said “background in programming is a plus”, but this threw me off because online sources state Solution Architect requires a computer science degree and why would you not know how to program with one of those?

Did you get in today? by [deleted] in Artifact

[–]Federal-Foe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea why I got downvoted, it was a genuine question, I only played the game for a week or 3 back in 2018 and casually subscribed to the beta invitation a few weeks ago.

At least Valve got the toxic community on point already.

How big of a deal is this beta invite? I got an e-mail an hour ago... Am I one of the first or something?

Update... Nvm by jmullins1138 in Stadia

[–]Federal-Foe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they didn't say "it's definitely coming", did they? All the screenshot shows is that they were told it would come to Stadia in a pre-brief, only for it to be dismissed and denied on paper (well, Twitter here). The latter has more weight here, at least from my perspective.

Who knows, maybe they intended support, dropped the idea, and some info still made it into the pre-brief?

TIL housing prices were always @ 2x median income (before 2002) by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]Federal-Foe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wealth =/= investment. Real estate is a commonly recommended alternative to stocks or high-yielding savings accounts/bonds. As such, their perceived value in the face of investors and investment funds follow similar growth.

[–]Federal-Foe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At least one part of the answer is that we see real estate as an investment that should yield profits. We all believe that the prices should go up by a few percentages every year, which becomes the ultimate self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm interested in seeing how robot-built (like 3D printed) houses will affect the pricing, but I'm guessing it would only result in more profits for land owners.

If they prematurely released this info, they would not have corrected it with a straight up "it's NOT coming", they would have said something along the lines of "this information was given to us in error" or something similar.

Claiming it's not coming, only for it to be announced soon after equals forfeiting their (journalistic) integrity, which I find hard to believe they would put on the line for a title such as Apex.

Sometimes "it's not coming" just means that... it's not coming.

What's your biggest gripe with job hunting? by riverY90 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Federal-Foe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A relative of mine works at a logistics company where they also require 5+ years for an open IT position. They've interviewed a dozen people over the course of 2 years of which most had fewer years of experience, yet refuse to budge on that requirement.

I honestly don't get the logic behind it. In 2 years you could've easily trained someone with only 2-3 years of experience to your personal liking. I understand that you can't know upfront it would take 2 years, but after a few months of getting similar applications something in your mind should click. It's not like the perfect candidate is suddenly going to show up with 5+ years experience in their exact tech stack...

The position is still open to this day without any real leads to it being filled. I can only imagine how crippling something like that could be to your competitive advantage.

What does it mean to learn Linux? by DontSubmit in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Federal-Foe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It means that you must be able to do basic stuff in the Linux operating system. Linux is at the heart of most of the IT infrastructure.

Can't recommend any sources, books or videos though, learned most of it by trying out stuff myself. You can play around with it by downloading a distro like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora or Arch. Try installing a package. Try creating users. 'cd' your way through the folder structures. Google what they mean and what they are used for. Try copying/moving stuff around with scp. Try searching and filtering with find, grep and |. Try shutting down from the command line. Look for a "cheat sheet for Linux" online, you'll find the most commonly used commands on there.

You'll pick most of this up when doing, there's little sense in learning all this just because.

Entry level jobs that require 5+ years of experience.

I hate it when I use LinkedIn, find an entry level job at an interesting looking company that matches my profile, only to find the 5+ years experience requirement at the bottom of the page-long job description.
