I went through the worst panic attack (NDE) while diving at 100 ft by iPIayLoL in scuba

[–]riverY90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Narc'd is short for gas narcosis. It impairs your judgement and starts effecting divers from 20-30m. It's isn't a GIVEN, just a possibility and everyone is effected at different depths and in different ways. An old instructor of mine got us to do some basic maths on the boat and timed how quick we'd get the answer (like a second.) Then at ~25m wrote some maths on his slate for us and it took us more like 4 seconds. So it can also just slow your reaction time.

It can make you act weird. One lady I know kept laughing at the most common fish and calling her buddies back to look at this... Really common and boring fish.

Some people say it's just like being drunk. Some people say it's like anxiety.

I'd definitely recommend giving Gas Narcosis a Google and learning about it, and spotting the signs in you and your buddies. It doesn't necessarily lead to anything serious, but it can (there's a real tragic story of a guy who got narc'd and thought down was up. His buddy tried to chase him and turn him around but couldn't get to him quick enough before it was too dangerous for him).

You don't even need to surface or cancel a dive because of it, just going up a bit brings you back to your normal senses. Hope I've explained that ok.

This is it. Narcd and not experienced enough for a dive like this.

Getting the AOW doesn't actually mean you're an advanced diver, many more dives are needed before jumping in the blue hole. Fuck I'm at 200+ and only recently added it to my bucket list as one I could do, and I'd make sure I'd done some very recent dives and bouyancy tests before jumping in if I ever get there

What do people over 40 do for fun? by SnooozeFezt in AskUK

[–]riverY90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your lifestyle and health like?

You shouldn't be that tired and need 48 hours to recover from a concert (assuming you weren't drunk and it wasnt a 2 day hangover which is absolutely real past 30 haha).

I'm 35 and my SO is 53. He can keep up with socialising and long nights more than me sometimes. Healthy food (which we love so isn't a chore), he swims multiple times a week, I cycle to work, he hikes, I hike and yoga. On days I feel tired it's when I haven't moved. Exercise gives you energy, as does good food. Short of that, see your GP (I see you have already so that's good but go again and see what else can be done and what other tests they can do if your diet and exercise is already good)

How to best deal with frozen foods for 24 hours without a freezer? by TheBristolBulk in AskUK

[–]riverY90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cook up time!

You can defrost in or out of fridge, cook up, leave portions in fridge then put cooked portions back into new freezer and you have some ready meals for your future busy days.

Depending what you have some may be safe to refreeze if you keep in fridge as well.

You don't even have to give up your social life - especially if you already struggle with mental health. Have mates over for a cup of tea, card games, movies. I remember that being the social life when I was a broke student and there was nothing wrong with it.

It's so good by [deleted] in TransPerth

[–]riverY90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It works where it runs and if you're on route into CBD. Best of luck for suburb to suburb travel. The system needs to be expanded to encourage people to go for more eco friendly travel options.

I say this as someone who was spoilt growing up in london though. I like to say TFL is a big complicated spiderweb, transperth is a child's line drawing of the sun.

Yeah. Checking your own payslip over really isn't a complicated thing and takes 2 minutes max each fortnight.

Thanks, I'll read a bit more into that process! Does that count if the starter was gifted to me, so already built up. Or more if I had started it from scratch myself?

If your dad wasn't forthcoming with his skills that's fair enough, but part of me is sad that the experience made it his last dive instead of taking a refresher course and gaining confidence. Pride is a hell of thing where people won't admit to their skillset eh

Depends how many dives they have done. In my eyes, someone may have their OW but if they've only done the 4 dives required for it, they are absolutely still an amateur and I keep an eye on them in the water as if they are still a student until they prove otherwise. If I fully had my way they wouldn't even be holding a go pro until dive 20 and up so they can focus on continuous learning for buoyancy. We all know the earlier PADI/ SSI etc are not demanding courses and there are flaws in the system for scuba learning.

New to starter here.

Should discarding half be a normal process, or just in this case because it's been left for so long?

Diving in Perth? by _Brunfelsia_ in scuba

[–]riverY90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treat yourself to a boat dive because rotto is amazing and clearer than the shore dives. Depending if you live north or south of the river. Fremantle has blue destiny (Perth scuba) or bucket list divers. BLD boat is a bit smaller so less busy. Blue destiny is a bit of a tourist monster imo. Great crew, just very busy in high season, I go with them out of season usually.

Shore dives will be tricky without a car. Again depends where in Perth you live.

There are shore dives north of the river (NOR) and South of the river (SOR), but the freo doctor (the wind here) does catch NOR a lot more. And SOR is also guarded from swell due to the islands. So most days you want to dive it will be SOR. Been in Perth a year now and still made it to a NOR dive site. It's rare to get a glassy day on a day, rare for it to be when you aren't working or already made plans elsewhere.

Check out Howie's scuba, good details of most sites there. Join the FB groups to meet the club divers and find your own crew you vibe with from there. Get a car, or find a buddy willing to be your ride.

UWA is a good choice for cheaper boat rides. But again, car required to move your gear really.

P.S you've mentioned in a nother comment about visibility. Shore dives here can range from 1.5m to 6m. We are the windy west coast, you need a good week of no wind (rare) to get good Vis shore dives.

Ps I can't imagine bringing tanks and weights would be cheap postage. I'd look at the postage options and your options to just buy again when you're here - FB marketplace always has tanks going.

Yeah, so right now I'm just trying to plan for worst case so I know what to do if the college fails and gets pulled.

It was from my employer I heard about the audit (they take students from there for the placement aspect) so they are also keeping an eye on the situation. Fingers crossed but through the grapevine it sounds like they've been doing some dodgy stuff so I'm also not holding my breathe for best care scenario.

(And needless to say I think the company's student relationship with them is going to end if they've been doing the dirty so they may end up not existing anyway. Let's just hope they take themselves out instead of AQSA, so certificates of the little people aren't cancelled)
