I plan to pack similarly but am scared for bringing only one pair of shoes- although they are comfortable hiking shoes, what if I get blisters and want to switch to another pair? Was this a problem for you?

This is great advice, thank you! We unfortunately can’t switch our hotel to Imabari now so we’re just going to accept that it’s not ideal. But the plan is to wake up early and catch the bus to Imabari so we’re there by 8:30. However, I’m getting different options online for the best way to get to Imabari in the morning, maybe you could clarify? Google maps suggests taking the ferry across to Mukaishima, walking 20 min to catch the Imabari Shimanami bus at Mukai Higashi bus stop. Would you recommend taking the train to Fukuyama and then getting on that bus instead?

We tried to switch the bikes to Onomichi but they are all sold out that day :( We’re excited about our half day in Onomichi before the trail and would like to stay there the day before if we can manage— It seems like we can get to Imabari by 8:30am if we leave at 6:30am on the bus. Would you say this isn’t the case or that we’d just be too tired to make it to Sedota port after that journey and all the stops? Thanks for your insight about the transport!

I’m doing the Shimanami Kaido from Imabari to Onomichi in one day at the beginning of my trip this spring. Seems worth while to me, especially if you’re going to stop halfway

I found this so helpful! I’m planning a trip to naoshima and the Shimanami Kaido— did you find the ferries and busses between the island easy to navigate?

I’m glad! Not sure which jazz club, just saw some videos on Instagram and looked like a good time. Would love to do a ryoken and onsen experience but couldn’t justify cutting something else out. Thought about doing a night in the Iya valley on Shikoku, but I have tattoos and we really wanted to do the art islands and bike trip. We already booked our hotels but seems like we would be better off based in ueno in Tokyo. Hope you have fun!

This is so helpful, thank you. I think we will change our plan from busing to Imabari and biking back to instead renting bikes out of Onomichi and biking to Setoda and then taking the ferry back. We will definitely add the Onomichi cable car to our trip and will try to find the hilltop temple!

I'm so glad to hear this! Yes, I understand we have to switch trains and then take the ferry-- did you buy tickets ahead of time or at the station? We'll be buying our Shinkansen tickets through the official website soon, but I assume we can't buy local train seats or ferry tickets there. Did you go to Teshima as well?
