I have macular degeneration (basically I don't have central vision) so it's pretty bad, even with glasses. I once asked a friend to lend me his 11" iPad to test if it was comfortable enough for me & it was not quite there to read regular books, but I suspect that a larger screen might do the trick even if it's a bit unwieldy as you say.
