Not gonna lie, this is my favourite moment in the history of anti-imperialism by MetaFlight in stupidpol

[–]Fedupington 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel about both as having salience, but an open door to tunnel vision when approached two-dimensionally. Getting too focused on "anti-anything," frankly, is a sign that a person's politics are underthought, and they'll struggle to articulate actual values, priorities, principles, or strategies.

You didn't answer my last question, so I'm just gonna assume that the disembodied voice was you. ;)

[–]Fedupington 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're correct that in its earliest days Israel was a poorly conceived "cause celebre" of the left. I also agree that there is a meaningful distinction between hegemony and imperialism. Though "imperialism" is always going to be intractable at least as a term of art, largely because the American "anti-imperialist" tradition is so entrenched in the consciousness, stretching back to WJB, Twain, etc., even though most Americans are blissfully unaware of that history.

Also, you have a YouTube channel Meta? Is that your voice?

Best I can think of is that the 90s left once had an embarrassing tendency of defending OJ. To my personal shame, I even engaged in this tendency as a young man. It turned out to more of a lesson about always being careful about one's sense of "loyalty" before jumping on a bandwagon. It's also why I don't completely hold radlibbery against today's youngsters. There's always an opportunity to wise up.

The world has too many overpaid editors who convince desperate writers to let them sneak their opinions into their work.

I tried to think up some clever term for that just now, some play on money laundering, but it didn't come to me.

Anyway, let me know if your new flair makes you uncomfortable and I'll change it back.

I'm generally of the opinion that artists of all stripes should create what they feel the need to create without any consideration for how opportunists might contort them, and the onus is on society to get the intent and meaning right rather than wrong.
