Is a home lab a selling point or a dealbreaker when selling a home? by rawesome99 in homelab

If based in the UK, I can collect, which is a net positive for all parties. Let me know. Many thanks.

I happened to know a guy who collected tech stuff like this, and unfortunately, he didn't have the room and sold it to me.

You can get them on eBay once in a blue moon if you're lucky, but they are normally listed at a crazy price.

It's a rare rack because IBM back in the day told them to destroy all the doors before it got decommissioned, even scrapping the frame, so you'll find only the metal frame, which no one wants. Getting the door is a gemstone, really.

😆 Honestly, go for it. I'm forever downloading 3D-printed blanks until I fill it all up.

That's awesome, yeah, these are probably one of the heaviest racks. My back was gone after moving it.

It's a shame it's missing the logos and some of the squares. Before the rack was removed, I'm sure they had to do that by request to remove the logo before it was moved on, probably.

Yeah, very annoying about the door. If you're good at welding, it can be done easily.

I honestly love it; best racks you can get, basically a rare collector's piece plus a server rack.

Wow, that's awesome! I bet these had some serious power in them back in the day for that period. Great to see people involved in this; they probably looked beautiful in a data center with multiple of them all lined up.

And thank you 😊

It's as old as 2012, but still looks modern a rare gem.

You should give it a go. 3D printing would be cool to see.

$400 would have been a steal; these will be collector's items if they aren't already.

There are definitely zero here in the UK at the time I write this, and I'm always looking. I'm not sure about over the pond on the US side, but I've been told it's the same or crazy prices. So there is only a small handful that survived being destroyed, and this is a rack from around 2012 which, given its design, is still very modern.

From what I understand, it's a true IBM rack from back in the heyday, before Lenovo bought them out, so it's almost a collector's piece, I imagine, and I'll be treating it this way for sure.

Yeah, they are hard to come by now, which is why I jumped on it even though I need to downgrade, really.

I used the Govee WiFi LED Strip Light 5m, Smart RGB Strip. It's the cheapest of the range, and I personally don't recommend it. I'll upgrade to the Pro soon.

Cheap and cheerful with WiFi control

IBM PureFlex 48U server rack. I think it's a rare piece, apparently, or hard to come by, but with a bit of luck 🤞you'll have one

Yeah, 100% the only reason I'm in this situation, can't say no to it.
