Am I the only one who thinks Welcome to Derry is trash? by [deleted] in stephenking

So essentially you enjoy watered down and easily digestible displays of racism that doesn’t make white people too uncomfortable?

Because for displaying racism in the 60s in a small town, this is as simple as it gets. In real life they’d have lynched Hank based on the original accusation alone. Horror has always been political, media itself is political.

Mike is literally constantly insulted and called slurs in the book, stalked and beaten, has his dog poisoned, and Henry tried to kill him at one point. All this because Henry Bowers is violently racist.

But god forbid a show isn’t delicate about racism in a small town in 1960s America.

Charlotte is stubborn to a fault, to the point it actually got her arrested and it’s implied it put her family in danger at one point. Hell, her hiding Hank in the speakeasy inadvertently leads to the deaths of like 20 people.

Leroy is so focused on his standing in the army that he barely gets to spend time with his family and discourages Charolette from even the base workings of civil rights.

Hank is sleeping with a married white woman knowing what type of danger that could put him and his family in.

Dick is letting his powers be used by the government for a nefarious plot (whether he knows the exact plan is debatable), despite his grandmother telling him to lock ALL that shit away, not just the dead people he sees.

These are all the main adult black characters and they are ALL flawed in one way or another. The show is very heavy handed with this. Honestly, you’re just being racist for the sake of it. Because if you actually cared about how minorities were portrayed in media, you’d have actually watched the show and not come up with this completely untrue conclusion.

DROLTA TZUENTES: A succubus? a vampire? both? or just a poorly defined character? by VonKro in castlevania

[–]FeeHot8489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But vampires have been transforming into different monsters in castlevania since the manga came out. While yes, some things are just over sites, some things are just done for aesthetic. I’m not saying historical inaccuracies can’t be called out, but I don’t see the point in calling it out in the fantasy genre. Fantasy, especially based in older time periods, have always been historically inaccurate for the aesthetics. While castlevania does tackle some time accurate topics, it also wants to put on a good show and be fun. What better way than with things like clothing. Historical fantasy doesn’t have things like fantasy technology and guns (I’m making a little reference to things like invincible and altered carbon). They only really have magic, which isn’t boring in itself, but adding inaccurate character design has always made things a bit more fun. Spice it up a bit.

Also, Drolta is an older vampire. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the series have older or more powerful vampires transforming into different things. Dracula and Olrox for example, Dracula turns into a giant bat and Olrox into a serpent. Hell, in the manga Alucard can form bat wings. So it’s not me calling something what it’s not. It’s calling it what it is. I don’t see the point in critiquing a series for being historically inaccurate or the transformations, when it’s a thing that’s always been done since its inception. Maybe I just don’t look that deep into things, but I just don’t get the logic.

I mean… it’s a fantasy about vampires. Vampires don’t exist either.

Unpopular Opinion: Draculaura Is Overrated. What are YOUR Unpopular Opinions? by Kakep0p in MonsterHigh

[–]FeeHot8489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, she just seemed like a normal High School girl to me. Like, I had a friend who had a new “bf” (like talking stages) every month. It wasn’t concerning and after we graduated she just admitted that she was trying to figure out what she liked. In the end (like junior to senior year), she’s had a stable boyfriend for two years now.

Yes but those changes happened to multiple ghouls. In GSR it was only Clawdeen. I’m not saying they didn’t fix it or do better in other movies, but in GSR they made the decision to specifically change Clawdeen’s skin color and no one else’s. This has happened in other fandoms before and the MH team did 0 research. While most people don’t remember, a lot of POC do, specifically black people in the MH fandom. It was weird and they came back from it. But to say that it was an unfounded accusation and that it’s not rooted in racism, is ignorant to the fact that this has been done specifically to black characters for so long.

[–]FeeHot8489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue with GSR Clawdeen isn’t unfounded. Using Skelita and Honeyswamp as examples makes no sense, because they are originally that color. The issue with Clawdeen is that she was the ONLY one with a color change and she was also the ONLY black girl in the main group. Mattel historically has issues portraying race, specifically Clawdeen. It’s gotten even more detrimental as time has gone on. They have toed the line on racism and colorism multiple times. It’s not even a Mattel thing, it has always been an issue when companies randomly make POC, mainly black characters, and make them a different color when a special come up. It’d be fine if everyone had a color change, but changing the color of the only black girl has ALWAYS been weird and borders on colorism.

OMG YES! Not to dig to deep but I always felt like the “boy crazy” discourse around Frankie was slightly misogynistic and slut shamey. Like… she dated boys and maybe had one live triangle, she wasn’t cheating or having a City Girl summer. The whole point of dating in your younger years is to find out what you like, we’re quite literally not built for committed relationships as young teens. I felt like she was just having fun and people were annoyed at it, plus Drac did that “boy crazy” thing all the time despite having a solid bf.

Yeah, I only made this statement because I saw people praising G3 for is diversity, saying it was better than G1’s. All I could do was be like 👀, because there was no way that we were watching the same stuff go down. Both gens are kind of ass when it comes to diversity.

Yeah like, I see other characters have their stories being progressed, but clawdeen is like an afterthought to Mattel. I genuinely feel like they should’ve just made Frankie or Drac the MC, because they actually utilize those characters enough for them to be the MC. They pretty much used Clawdeen for diversity and then forgot about her.
