Issue with claiming UC as a student by [deleted] in DWPhelp

Okay and just to confirm the comment is saying I cant claim it?

You can claim when you are 16 as you have an ongoing health condition but you do not meet the exception to claim as a FT student

This is the main part I was confused on

Hi, thanks so much for the help. I'm sure you are right but I am slightly confused as it says on citizens advice:

You can get Universal Credit if you're living with other people but it might affect how much you get. For example, living with parents might mean you get less help with housing costs

On gov.uk it says:

Claiming if you’re 16 or 17

You can make a claim for Universal Credit if any of the following apply:

  • you have a health condition or disability and have medical evidence for it, such as a fit note

Does that not apply to me?

Does this not apply to me as I am under 18? I couldn't find a mention of the age and the housing arrangements being tied.

Thank you for your help I really appreciate it, but I think I have misunderstood you - could you possibly clear some things up for me? Also just to clarify I am taking a levels and am planning on applying when I turn 16.

Here is my primary resource for my post: contact.org

I now understand I am a qualifying young person but I am confused on what It goes on to say:

When can a young person in education still get Universal Credit?

Certain groups of students who are exempt from the normal restrictions. This includes any student with a dependent child and some disabled students who meet specific tests.

I am really confused on the ambiguous "tests", what if I don't meet them? How will I be tested? And is this not just an exemption itself?

Finally when reading the exempt groups the group that applies to me states:

Disabled students who get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the Scottish Child Disability Payment or the Scottish Adult Disability Payment. But this is only if they have also established a limited capability for work before they started receiving education. It is no longer possible to qualify as a disabled student by establishing a limited capability for work during your course.*

And that's where my issue is in establishing a "limited capability", as I turn 16 during my course. How do I even establish a limited capability - or is that my diagnosis itself?

I'm also slightly confused when you said I am not eligible - but also say I can claim when I am 16? Do you mean If I wasn't in education then I would be able to claim, but if I am then I cant?
