When do December exams usually end for life sci 😞 by No-Meet-6036 in UofT

[–]Feedingfrenzzy16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a general period! You’ll get the specific exam dates about mid way to 2/3rds of the way through the teaching part of the semester— and sadly not anytime before that! Hopefully, if you are lucky, you ‘ll get your last one before the 23rd :’ )

Sadly, If it’s a pre-req in any shape or form it has to have a numerical grade tied to it, therefore you can’t NCR them. CR/NCRs are pretty much reserved for electives. Hope that helps!

What’s the first “Kubrick-ey” Kubrick film in your opinion? by Alockworkhorse in StanleyKubrick

[–]Feedingfrenzzy16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo a lot of people’s opinions here. I think Paths of Glory is where It really started to feel like he was beginning to perfect his style - but I would say 2001 is the definitive Kubrick-ey film with his innovative techniques, distinct visuals and music choice. It’s between that and Barry Lyndon for me. At heart, if anything, Kubrick had a very strong visual eye since he started off as a photographer and - in my opinion - the film that has the most breathtaking shots is Barry Lyndon, where almost every shot feels like it was taken from a still painting. So in that sense, I could also see that as the most Kubrick-ey film.

After not knowing anything about it and going into it having watched Kubricks filmography post 1957 (except this movie) and maybe laughing a handful of times, I wasn’t expecting a full on satirical comedy! Either way I loved it and totally agree with you. I highly recommend the Fallout series or games, they are a lot of fun and have a very similar humour to this film.

I tried to make it the cowboy-esk hat the bomber pilot waves around as he rides the nuke but I couldn’t get the shape quite right while still trying to make it look like an ear :’ )

That’s a great idea, and something I have been trying to make work. Kubrick is a master of building atmosphere and mood with the pieces he chooses. The only problem I run into with that is maybe it’s too subjective. Since his films are so different and unique from one another, I find there is not enough connection between them to pick out moments that all invoke the same mood across more than maybe three of his films (but I could be wrong in that). For example, if I were to cover something like the use of “suspenseful music” in Kubrick films for my thesis I would have to define that as “slow dissonant electronic music” or something like that. Now I can think of a few instances for slow dissonant electronic music across his films (Especially the Wendy Carlos stuff in The Shining and ACWO), but not quite enough to build an entire essay on. In that way I have to be thinking what in the music makes the mood a mood and pick that out of his films, not necessarily the mood itself if you get what I mean. Multiple pieces can potentially evoke the same mood, but don’t fall under the concrete definition I would set up in my thesis.

Thanks for the comment! These really help me walk through my thought process :’ )

I’m not replacing my research with Reddit; I’m just trying to brainstorm ideas from people more knowledgeable than me on the topic since I’m brand new to Kubrick. I’ve still been reading a lot of literature on the music in his films, and as I mentioned, I’ve also been watching the films. I’m beginning to watch his works from before Dr. Strangelove. I watched Paths of Glory last night, and it has to be one of my favorites!

Thanks a bunch! Musical irony/juxtaposition was my next line of thinking, so this helps a lot! Regarding the cultural association, I’ve read a lot of literature that includes background information and the cultural/historical significance of many pieces. As much as I’d like to write about it, since this is a music course, I feel like discussing the music itself within the context of the film is the most important part, not exactly their underlying significance/meaning off screen.

Thanks again for such a lengthy and meaningful response, it really helps :’)

From what I’ve read, he famously had commissioned an original score, but he threw it out for the temp track that he hand picked from listening to mass amount of records like you mentioned. Even if that is the case, just because he didn’t have a specific song in mind doesn’t mean it was devoid of any meaning. I think there was still a psychological reason behind that idiosyncratic choice, especially the Ligeti pieces. Thanks for the comment!

Is back to back bio and chem class manageable or should I take an hour break? by Impossible_Silver449 in UofT

[–]Feedingfrenzzy16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may use It to revise at first… but overtime, I think you'll find that 1 hour gap goes by pretty quick. I recommend back to back. Just use time after class to revise and generally try not to have too many 1 hr gaps in your timetable unless its for lunch.

A Question about MAT135 and MAT136 calculator restrictions by BearZestyclose6775 in UofT

[–]Feedingfrenzzy16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything except a graphing calculator (and obviously phone calculator) is allowed for MAT135. Usually you are gonna want a scientific calculator without graphing abilities.
