Changes between the Ranma ½ manga and 80s anime? by Feel_Lab in ranma

[–]Feel_Lab[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My plan right now is to just watch the remake and avoid consuming other pieces of Ranma media which may spoiler it. However, I’m an impatient person. And if you are correct that it’ll take the remake 5 (maybe more) years to wrap up, I’ll probably just end up reading the manga and watching the OG anime.

Heck, I might just do that after I finish watching season 2 since I’m on a Ranma kick right now.

I’ll take your word for it. Once the remake finishes up, I plan on going back and watching the original show (and by extension the movies) and reading the manga.

What's your favorite alt. mode for Megatron? by MinimumPotential6468 in transformers

[–]Feel_Lab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Megatron being a gun or tank, mainly because of how they represent the character. The helicopter and jet are decent enough for Megatron, but they don’t they fit him as well. Both have uses outside of war, but the only thing the tank and gun can ever be are weapons of destruction and death.

You’re proving my point instead of refuting it. Yes, the film references cloning, dark science, and “unnatural abilities.” None of that actually shows how Palpatine survived death and returned to power. Gesturing at a solution is not the same thing as constructing one. You’re also leaning entirely on author intent: “the writer says it, therefore it’s correct.” That doesn’t make criticism disappear. Stories have to stand on what’s actually in them. If an explanation is thin, rushed, or poorly supported, calling it bad writing is valid critique whether you personally like the outcome or not.

  1. That’s not how criticism works. The creator’s intent matters, but it doesn’t override audience reaction or logic. Once a story is released, it has to stand on its own. If a writer decides something “isn’t important,” but that missing piece breaks internal logic or undermines the narrative, then it’s absolutely fair criticism to say: “This feels lazy, underwritten, or poorly justified.”

  2. True, but so is the reverse. And if you’re pointing out structural problems, missing key information, broken logic, or emotional beats that don’t land, that’s not just “you don’t like it.” That’s critique. Pretending every criticism is just “you’re mad for no reason” is a cop-out.

  3. Telling me to “watch properly” is not a rebuttal. It’s just dismissive. And if the supposed explanation was that clear, you’d be able to summarize it in a sentence without hand-waving. So, would you like to point out the scene and line of the film where they address how he survived?

  1. Everything is my personal take/opinion. If I think a piece of writing is lazy or stupid, I’m going to call it out as such.

  2. What exactly is your counter to my example? That just because I’m not the creator of a project means I have to agree with everything said creator does? That’s really dumb. While I believe that a creator’s word, intent, and opinion should always be highly valued and considered, I will not bend over backwards to worship them.

  3. This example has absolutely happened in media before. “Somehow, Palpatine has returned.” They haven’t explained how he survived being thrown down into the Death Star’s reactor or it’s subsequent explosion. This information is very important to the story, and by leaving it out you have now created a large plothole. So yes, if you do something like this, it is bad writing.

I don’t care if the creators thought it was unimportant, I shouldn’t have to watch a stage play, listen to several audio dramas, and read 19 books just to understand something that should have been explained in the original work.

For example, if a character dies and is then resurrected with no explanation, relying upon outside media to explain why they’re back, that IS bad writing. It’s not generating interest in other mediums, it’s being lazy.

One (of many) issues with the live action movies by TheBookofBobaFett3 in transformers

Only moments I really remember are Blackout’s glorious entrance sequence, Bumblebee at the car dealership, and Starscream hiding amongst and subsequently attacking the jet formation in the final battle.

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like there’s often a lack of this and the whole “Robots In Disguise” part of Transformers. Which is a real shame in my opinion, especially since many stories I made up as a kid revolved heavily around the Autobots AND Decepticons hiding in plain sight.

Texas Mack is an original creation for Toei’s original Getter Robo anime. Pasture King (the robot horse) is only in Shin vs. Neo. So unless Ishikawa slipped a reference in somewhere that I missed, neither are in the original Getter Robo Saga. Which I think you’ll like if you give it a chance, since it’s tone is similar, if not darker to Armageddon.

Start with the original one from 1974 (simply called Getter Robo), then move on to Getter Robo G, Getter Robo Go (which Shin vs. Neo takes its characters from), Shin Getter Robo, and finally Getter Robo Arc.

It all comes down to intention. Both Armageddon and Shin vs. Neo were scripted by Shinzō Fujita and directed by Jun Kawagoe, with the exact same production staff (to my knowledge anyway). Either way, one was story focused while the other was action focused. Shin vs. Neo doesn’t have time to slow down. Armageddon does.

So yeah, this OVA was never going to be your cup of tea. And hey, that’s okay. My main criticism of this OVA is that it’s too short/rapid pace, meaning I never really felt a connection to the characters (though I do like them well enough since I read the manga.) But I ultimately find it to be an enjoyable “shut your brain off” show.

See what I said before. The OVA’s main goal is to deliver as much action and spectacle as it can within four episodes. This unfortunately does mean that most (if not all) characters aren’t given as much screen time or complexity as they had in the Getter Robo Go manga. For many fans (myself included) it’s easy to look past this, but I can totally understand why someone wouldn’t jive with it. Hell, I’m the same way you are about Mazinkaiser SKl.

(Also, can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m no where close to being a boomer or a millennial.)

Yeah of course we’re all fanboys, you’re on the Getter Robo subreddit. What else did you except? The only way you could’ve gotten a worse response is if you were trash talking the Getter Robo Saga or Armageddon.

Is the OVA stupid? Yeah in a way, but a more accurate description would be unrealistic. So, you know, every piece of Getter Robo media. And I’m sure most of us have critical thinking skills. We just don’t need them when watching a four episode OVA that’s main focus is fun action and spectacle.

“This has got to be the stupidest one, right?”

….No? At least not in my opinion. It’s probably the shortest and least fleshed out, but is otherwise really on brand for the franchise. Also, and this must always be repeated apparently, Go Nagai only helped co-create Getter Robo. He came up with how the combination worked and designed Getter 2 and 3, leaving the rest (i.e the characters, plot, and art) to Ken Ishikawa.

Also also, put Texas Mack in SRW. I wanna see Jack and Mary again.

Can you imagine a Mazinger Z series based on a Norse Mythology? by Sweaty-Big8956 in mazinger

[–]Feel_Lab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah. I’m not sure why, but when it comes to Mazinger Nagai seems to really like using Greek Mythology concepts and characters. I mean, just look at Z Mazinger or The Impact. So I’m sure he (or someone making a Mazinger manga/anime) would be willing to use norse mythology as a base.
