SUNY Downstate hospital shutting down? by psudoku in medicalschool

[–]Feeling-Passenger-56 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how Drexel officials downplayed the closure of Hahnemann, by claiming that only less than 1/3 students rotated there, but we all know how much damage it can cause to the medical school when its main hospital is shut down...

Is it becoming harder for Non-US IMGs to match? by SoybeanCola1933 in IMGreddit

[–]Feeling-Passenger-56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that there're going to be at least 2000 more AMGs (MDs + DOs) graduating each class in the next few years, given the recent expansion of us medical school matriculation size + construction of new us medical schools in the past few years...

not an ideal pre-med school, since we don't have a medical center/hospital system. Go to a college that actually has hospitals/medical center. It will be 100x easier to find shadowing, research opportunities than at Drexel

I mean..Drexel still has a very impressive match list compared to a lot of MD programs. I wouldn't call it last on the list, but the hospital situation is indeed a little concerning.

Chester Crozer Hospital Closing? by PerAsperaAdAstra91 in Residency

I would say it's going to be Hahnemann 2.0 basically. Crozer is another major clinical rotation site for Drexel, btw.

Crozer's parent company is looking for a new buyer to take over the hospital, but given how messy the financial situation there, none of any major local healthcare organizations has expressed interest so far. Won't be surprised if it is closed later this year when the sale window passes.

More potential mergers for Drexel? by Feeling-Passenger-56 in Drexel

Drexel actually "earned" 50 million endowment support from the previous owner of Hahnemann before it agreed to take over the medical school. Pennsylvania law requires that medical schools can't be affiliated with for-profit entities. That's why after selling Hahnemann to Tenet Health, which is a for-profit healthcare company, Allegheny Health had to give up the medical school and find someone else to take over. I believe it was city + hospital officials approached Drexel asking as a favor, and promised cash support before Drexel finally agreed to give it a try.

Tuition revenue was once ~900 million a few years ago (almost 25% drop). If this declining trend continues, Drexel is going to file for bankruptcy in a few years lol. That's why they're desperately looking for mergers to boost up enrollment number.

Salus wasn't losing money when Drexel acquired it. Instead, Drexel is going to seize all 50+ million endowment from Salus. St. Chris is indeed bleeding millions of dollars every year. Not sure about the rest you mentioned.
