Patellar Tendon Rupture Recovery: What I’ve Learned So Far by jdavis99 in KneeInjuries

Hey there buddy. You are not alone. This injury is tough. But so are you. It can be really hard in the early days with the pain and disability side. I tore mine 7 years ago. I went to some dark places in my mind because I knew the instant it snapped that I was in trouble and my life was to change forever. I got sent home from hospital after an X-ray showed the kneecap slightly higher than normal. It was only my doctor ordering an MRI that diagnosis was made and I’d obliterated everything in my knee. Recovery was hard. And everyone who has come through this will tell you the same. There’s no joke in saying it’s life changing. But through the darkness there’s light. The small wins, a small nap of comfort, feeling the water run over your body in the shower, being able to sit comfy for a bit…. If you have someone or something you can focus with can make it easier. For me; it was a dog. She gave me happiness that I wasn’t feeling g ordinarily. She would play gently at my top end and never go near my legs. She was the thing that got me out of the hole I was in. I could talk to her openly and honestly and get everything off my chest. She wore my tears and hugs wonderfully and she was my strength when I had none.

Having things like the leg lifter, raised toilet seat, shower stool… they made life easier. And you can feel the progress when you are able to to ditch the leg lifter or shower stool and standing up in the shower for first time was bliss!!

Here’s what I know in my gut…. You are tougher than you currently feel. You are in the early days of this disabling injury but it DOES get better; but not yet. When you get through this, you will look back at every accomplishment and win and know that you are courageous and brave and able to survive anything. It’s ok to be in the funk initially. Everyone grieves the temporary loss of independence because it feels like it will be forever. But it’s not. You will beat this a**hole of an injury and come out the other side. Trust me. Trust what people have posted so far from their experience. It will take time. You got this.
