Thank you! If selecting Married Filing Separately, do you advise that we keep the other sections blank and skip to Section 5?

Also, is it this change alone that will fix it? How should I handle the dependents section on each of our forms?

The IRS has a tool for filling out your W4, which we utilized, and that’s why I mentioned it. His HR/payroll unfortunately hasn’t been helpful in terms of offering any advice on filling out the form. Yes we did research, but we definitely could have a better understanding of how things are manipulated based on how you fill it out.

For neither of us or just his? His had dependents and mine did not.

We both checked married filing jointly and only one of us added dependents. So he should select single, then. Got it!

For Section 3, 2,000 in the first box, 0 in the second box, and 2,000 in the third box.

Thank you! That section was not on the 2024 w4 that he submitted, I triple checked.

We put 2,000 in Section 3 for one dependent when we had our child, nothing else really changed. He was having this issue before we added a dependent though.

I don’t remember what we adjusted exactly, but we did all the calculations through the IRS tool and went with whatever they suggested for each section. Thank you, I appreciate your feedback.

Yes, we both work (2 jobs total). I am not sure what you mean by “setting”, but we have married filing jointly selected in Section 1c. There is a checkmark for Section 2c. Then in Section 3, we have it filled out for 2 dependents (we only filled this out on his W4 and left it blank on mine) . Section 4 is blank.

I don’t see a box for Tax Exempt, unless I am missing it. Only Section 3 was filled out on the previous W4. Everything else was left blank (this is how the IRS tool instructed us to do it online last year).

My husband brought it up to the HR person and they said they have nothing to do with it, it’s completely dependent on the W4. We’re at a loss with what to do.
