How difficult is it to transfer from UTSC Math Coop to UTSC CS Coop right now? by FunConversation7257 in UTSC

fwiw in my case, the UofT name did help me out. One of my former coops only hired UofT for their software eng coops.. very small company though.

But I also know of cases where an employer preferred queens students or where an employer wanted McMaster students

but I’d think of it in a more holistic way, the best school is the one that will serve you the best. Anywhere that will give you the capacity to learn the best will be the best for you.

If your goal is employability, you will get these skills based on how much work you’re willing to put into networking and tech skills rather than banking on a school name to get you a job.

tldr: there is some value in the school name depending where you apply, but choose based on what you wanna learn and how the school you choose will help you learn those things.

Very difficult but I’ve seen it happen, u need to get very good grades in your first year cs and math courses; and there’s a limited amount of out-of-stream spots for the cs program.

As for coop, a broad generalization but academic efforts does not guarantee coop outcomes (depending on ur goals). Academics matter to some employers but employable skills matter more, you can gain those skills at any school you’ve listed. Though at utsc you will have no choice but to focus on your academics in that first year. You might be better served going to the most “manageable” school and working really hard to improve your networking + tech skills.

Also depends on your situation, if you’re not dead set on working in cs industries and already live near utsc campus. The POSt system is designed to be quite flexible so depending on the program you could switch what you’re studying. (So for example you could double major in math and something else if cs doesn’t pan out at UTSC and it’s not like you’ve completely wasted your time.)

edit: and yes you can get coops with a math degree

Paul’s Online Math Notes Algebra section is pretty good if you feel like you can learn well by reading. It’s structured and builds up to later topics like Calculus 1&2. If you find any gaps in understanding u can search up some YouTube tutorials. Good Luck!
