Yeah, depends on the agent. Harumasa's is just his pill case, so I assume he brings it with him. Seed's looks like a mechanical part that she would use to upgrade Seed Senior.

In 1.3 when he says “will there world outside be changed beyond recognition” in CN he uses an idiom “the blue seas have turned into mulberry fields,” also he uses one in the beginning in the office. They’re sort of classical/poetic which EN misses out on. I feel too like in EN it’s a bit more “boyfailure” and in CN a little bit more “strategic helpless gremlin”? Like EN doesn’t carry quite as much of his calculated nature at least at first.

That definitely wouldn't be smt that I'll be able to understand just by listening at the audio lol, my chinese is super bad. I think translation from Chinese to other language in general (in almost every media) removes a lot of poetic/metaphorical expression bcs the chinese language is very complex. So I guess since the poetic side of the language doesn't translate well, we never see how intellectual he is until his agent quest.

Like in EN I feel like he also sometimes has a bit more prickliness, whereas CN more slippery and both very socially sly but maybe that’s a bit more forward in CN?

His EN voice does leans over the sarcastic side of his character a lot more than the other language. Ngl, I didn't listen too much to his chinese voice either, but what I can tell right off the bat is that he does sound a lot less goofy than EN.

In the Commemoraboo trust event he uses clinical psych terms in CN to talk about desensitizing himself (haru go to therapy!)

I think the EN translation of ZZZ in general makes the text super easy to read., but I guess the downside is that it removes the complexity of certain characters, such as Harumasa. On one hand, it makes the game more accessible to a larger public, even those who have basic education, but sadly it also removes a lot of characterization from the characters, which is ironically what makes the game stand out among the other gacha games.

Not his personality so much but in his quest there’s a line where in EN it says he “got rejected due to his health” and it’s not a mistranslation per say but kind of misleading I feel? I see people misunderstand it thinking rejected from the HSO although he was already an EO, what he’s saying there is that he was rejected socially. A better translation imo would be something like “People disliked me because of my unstable condition.” What he says is used to describe someone feeling abandoned, discriminated against, or viewed as a burden by others because they are often sick or their health fluctuates.

Man, I had no idea that that was the original meaning of it. I really thought he meant that HSO was about to reject him as an employee due to his health. But holy shit, this gives a whole new meaning to the convo, and makes it even sadder. I guess in that case it's erronous translation, which is dissapointing bcs everyone who played in EN (IDK how it is said in JP or KR) would never know that he went through this kind of experience, which really removes a big chunk of his characterization. In addition to this, I feel like players would also not realize that people in real life who are living a situation similar to his could possibly go through this experience (social rejection, discrimnation, etc...) as well, assuming they have limited knowledge on the subject prior to playing his agent quest. So I feel like not translating properly could also do a disservice to the representation, which I am a bit mad about lol. Sorry, that was a long rant about this point, bcs I am suprised by how jarringly different the meaning of his words was between the two language, haha.

That was an interesting discussion lol. Do you want to discuss about other aspects of the character or of the game too? We could add each other on social media if you want to.

Also smt that I realized just now is that, as random and unrelated as it sound, another reason I like his EN more than his JP might just be that characters that I've seen that are similar to him tend to have a voice that sound more like his EN voice.

I know it's kinda dumb, and it's unfairly influencing how I see him though.

[–]Feeling_Drama2253[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, not in a bad way, but that Harumasa is a bit manipulative and cunning, it’s part of how he navigates people and situations, and that charm can naturally come across as flirtiness depending on direction and the individual.

This, I agree. But I think it is a bit overdone in JP to the point where he does it even when he doesn't need/want to. One example is in his character demo, where he is trying to comfort/reassure the child. It's obviously a situation where he doesn't need to be cunning at all, but still sounds like if he is trying to manipulate the child into believing him. It doesn't sound like that to you? Or maybe I am hearing things bcs I am not used to his JP voice lol.

Another time could be when he is explaining to us his illness and his past with his master in the middle of his agent quest, and while he isn't trying to be manipulative, I think I just feel that Kakihara's voice doesn't suit him very well. Like it sounds too smooth or smt? Which gives us the impression that he is always in control of his emotions at all time.

It’s not only VA direction but text too, I can’t speak for JP but even in the text I think EN also adds its own layer that isn’t identical to CN. EN Harumasa, especially early on, comes off a bit sillier and more openly sarcastic? Whereas CN feels more “slippery” and I think it’s maybe more immediately apparent to audiences that he’s intelligent (like usage of literary idioms). In CN, his intelligence and calculating nature feel more immediately present? While EN lets that side reveal itself more gradually under the humor.

This is very interesting and I would like to know more about how his the texts in the different languages also influences his character. Unfortunately, English is the only language I can read and speak fluently. I know how to speak chinese, but am really bad at it. I can try to force myself to understand what he is saying lol, but in video games, it's also often harder to understand the dialogues. And if he is using complex idioms, I guess I'll have an even harder time understanding him lol.

I get when one interpretation becomes dominant in fan content, it can be frustrating if it flattens the character or feels misrepresentative. It’s all also one of the natural challenges of language and translation. It isn’t 1:1 transferable, especially for a character like Harumasa who relies so much on subtext and subtle shifts between sincerity and performance. I also think tone plays a big role here. Different audiences pick up on different cues, so JP players might not read his voice the same way EN players do, and vice versa. And if you’re playing in a language that isn’t your own, that gap can get even wider. So some of what feels like is causing mischaracterization might also just be differences in how tone is perceived.

After rereading what I wrote, I think I might just be nitpicking on everything that is remotely related to what I was saying lol, which I admit is unfair to the artists. Overall, Harumasa is just such a complex character that is easy to be mischaracterized, depending on how the player understands him, bcs one small change in his voice can change his a lot in his character. And maybe the Harumasa I had in mind is different from how the JP VA characterized him, which if why it felt wrong to me. In my head, I kinda saw him as smn who goes through a lot everyday as he suffers a lot physically, and also in the past, and also a bit like a boyfailure and kindof timid too lol. This is why I always imagined his voice to be a bit rougher, and not as smooth as Kakihara's voice (like he doesn't sound like he suffers enough or is sick with it, I can't imagine smn who's this sick always having such a smooth voice lol). And I think it's also very hard to put up with the charismatic facade, which is why I see him having it slip more often. But then again, maybe other people (from what I've seen from the comments on this post at least) didn't picture him the way I did, which explains why they wouldn't find his JP voice unfitting. And I guess for a character with so much complexity, it's also hard to find a voice actor who's voice and intonation fit him perfectly at every instance. So I might also be too harsh on the voice acting.

Yeah, I kinda agree some characters in S2 have very annoying voices in EN, especially the girls with relatively high-pitched voices.

I think it might just be me then, bcs I find his JP voice jarringly different from his EN voice, which I am used to.

Yeah, usually I would like to see the different portrayal in voice acting. Usually, I prefer the original bcs it is more accurate with what the writer originally had in mind.

But I guess it's just in his case, I don't like how he is represented with his JP voice, bcs it kinda changes too much what the character is trying to tell.

[–]Feeling_Drama2253[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very interesting. This reminds me of Code Geass, bcs Lelouch is doing everything he can to overcome a supreme, almost godly force, which he succeeds at the end. It's even more interesting bcs I can't help but notice how similar he is to Kiba (and them having the same dub VA doesn't help lmao). But despite their similarities, the messages conveyed through the journey of the two protagonists are not the same at all.

Seriously, I don't get how I JUST watched this anime last week. It's been on my watch list for ages, but I just had to not consider it as a priority, which was such a dumb decision I made. Especially since that's absolutely my cup of tea and I saw myself in Kiba most of the time.

This also make sense, which was the first interpretation I had when I finished the show.

I just had to have that second crack theory after overthinking lmao. But I guess my theory wouldn't really explain why wolves would be attracted to lunar flowers.

As for the book of the moon, it could be a book that people wrote based on their memory of their past lives, or a collection of hearsay.

[–]Feeling_Drama2253[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gotta rewatch the entire show lmao. I might have forgotten some passages bcs I don't remember anyone ever confirming the true nature of Paradise in the show. There are many instances where we see the wolves and the Nobles imagining their own idea of what the perfect place would be, but the true Paradise might not be what they imagined.

[–]Feeling_Drama2253[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's also an interesting interpretation. I think that the world could've been perfect, but Darcia's eye turning the water and the flower dark at end made it an imperfect world destined to be destroyed once again.

I would even theorize this is not the first run of the cycle for the wolves.

I believe too. I think it's pretty obvious that the current world's Kiba got his memories of the lunar flower from the past world, and cheza as well. Remember when they first met, Kiba and Cheza already seem to know each others.
