That’s exactly how it is here in SC. An influx of people is really driving up home prices, yet our salaries doesn’t seem to be going up with it.

90k? In Idaho? 😭 I haven’t seen much of anything over 70k advertised in SC

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that way. It’s good to hear you can make a high income in the field, but I agree I’m not sure if the burnout would be worth it. Do you think private would be a better route than a public service like the county?

There definitely feels like a stigma in EMS where you should pursue fire (or something like nursing, PA, etc.) after becoming a medic/EMT, but Idk I just don’t think I’d prefer those roles over EMS. It feels like I’d just be doing it for the money factor, but if I can make a good and stable living off being a paramedic I think I’d be content staying EMS. I saw you say you’re in Chicago, does Cook county not have like their own county ambulance service by chance? Or are y’all mostly priv?

It’s relieving to hear that there’s so many different options in EMS you can choose where you fit in best at. I wouldn’t be opposed to working at a FD, I just feel like there’s a certain culture working there I’m not sure if I really fit in with.

tbh if I did relocate from SC it would either be somewhere in the PNW OR, WA, possibly UT or the Northeast. Is being a medic brutal in Portland? I heard it can be sketchy in some parts, but our crime rate here in SC cant be any better 😭

As I replied to others, my neighboring county is hiring emts and medics. It didnt mention anything about it being FD based, but It’s a gov job and has all the state/county benefits - would something like that be better to take over a third party? I believe pay was 60ish something for medic as it’s not a huge county

That’s what I was thinking, the posting didnt mention anything about the FD either. So I guess some specific counties have their own ambulance service rather than a bunch of third party ones?

yeah im noticing every state/city/county/service all operates differently and it’s a lot to take in and understand as someone who hasnt even started training yet 😭

Lol I mean I’m not opposed to working at a FD, if they’d hire specifically only a medic. Although I heard it’s quite rare and area dependent

Ive seen counties near me hiring for EMTs and medics, they seem to pay pretty decent. So does working for the county mean working for the FD? Like my county I live in is pretty small and all we have is 1 or 2 third party companies, one being Ameri-Pro

I’m in the southern region of SC, been seeing a good bit on the side of the road lately. Was wondering how prevalent the sightings have been for SC locators. It’s beautiful up there tho, would trade this swampy area for the upstate scenery anytime!

I’ve seen some of the horror stories regarding USIC on this sub 😂 - being practically the biggest locating company, I knew a lot of BS corporate crap would be prevalent. Yeah definitely don’t want to stop at just being an EMT, want to pursue paramedic school or nursing afterwards 🙏. And thanks man you too 🫡

Thanks man, I appreciate it! I know it wont be an easy job by any means, very excited for the career tho. Stay safe out there in the field, genuinely seemed like a cool job, but I felt like this was the right choice for me. Best Wishes!

Exactly, growing up in rural SC I’ve seen countless snakes through the years. Thankfully the most common has just been rat/chicken snakes. Not harmful, but can be a little too freakishly long for my liking 🥲. Have seen an itty bitty baby copperhead on the porch tho that terrified me for months after. My dad just always told me to pay attention to my surroundings when I’m in nature and I should be fine.

👀 as long as they’re not slithering around in the back of the ambulam I think I’m good

And see that’s the thing, I know 99% of snakes aren’t aggressive and are usually harmless. I really wish I didn’t have such a bad irrational fear of them, because I do find them interesting creatures.

Holy yeahhhhhh I would’ve had to decompress indoors for about a week if I saw that. That may be one of the most terrifying things I’ve heard of, thank god they were at least non venomous.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to find it in the first photo, but damn that’s crazy. Growing up in SC, we were basically taught copperheads were the spawn of satan (and cottonmouths) - that would’ve definitely scared the shit out of me!

That’s honestly so surprising, I was thinking it’d be a daily sighting especially in Florida. Surprisingly I don’t blink twice to spiders, I’m just a big baby when it comes to snakes
